[slim] AAC and gapless

2011-09-13 Thread MikeDelta

I recall a time when my squeezeboxes played aac files gapless.
Unfortunately I can't recall with which version of SqueezeboxServer...

Today, using version both 7.5.5 and 7.6.1 on ubuntu, aac files do not
play gapless on my SB3, Radio and Boom.

My tests:

I took 2 aac files and played them with winamp and vlc on windows 7.
The files play gapless.

I decoded the 2 files on ubuntu using 'faad -w filename.aac
filename.wav' and played those with winamp and vlc on windows 7. They
do NOT play gapless.

So FAAD doesn't seem to decode the files properly.

AAC files where created by iTunes (ripped from my CD).

I know FAAD is used to play aac files because I can see the FAAD
process being started on the ubuntu machine. By the way, FAAD is
version 2.7 build on april 14 2010.

I can't find a definitive answer in the wiki (or with a search on this
forum) if my players are supposed to play aac natively or if they need
transcoding.

My questions:

1. Which players can play aac natively AND gapless
2. Should aac play gapless when being transcoded?

Hmmm you're right. The problem was actually solved when changing printer
settings or remote server settings right after changing the From date.
It was however not solved when changing settings in the main screen but
it is now. Download RC3 again and give it a try. I'm sure it is solved
 now.

Looks good!

No unexpected behaviour so far.

Good work!

Fixed it and available as v3.3 RC3.

Frank,

I'm afraid the error is still there...

1. I've installed your latest version.
2. Started the script without changing any setting.
3. I got a catalog starting from the set 'From Date' (a 'From date' was
still set from a previous attempt).

Very good, but...

4. Changed the 'Header Background' setting on the main menu
5. Started the script again (so only the background color was changed,
nothing else)
6. Script ran for 28 minutes and produced a full catalog.

2010-04-10 Thread MikeDelta

Hope this still makes any sense and it answers your question?

Frank,

First of all, I've been using AAC for a long time now and I think it's
a great program. I'm trying to understand some of the options that are
not that obvious to me.

I think I understand what you're trying to tell me, but it doesn't
fully answer my question.

I have played/experimented with the CLI of squeezeboxserver and I know
for a fact that the CLI gives all the information you need about
artists, albums and tracks to make a catalog like AAC does. The CLI
even provides a (partial) link to the (cached?) coverart.

Because of the need for the MySql driver you're probably accessing the
database directly without the CLI.

I recall having read something about the need for a drive letter to get
the albumart, but while looking at the catalogs html output file, I can
see that the links to the album art do not have a reference to the
drive letter or directories at all.

So I wondered, why would AAC need a path to the directories where the
music files are stored?

If I understand you explanation correctly, the starting folder can be
used as an index to get only partial information on the catalog.

In my case the M: drive points to the mp3 files only while the catalog
contains all albums which includes mp3,aac,ogg,wma and flac files.
These aac, ogg and other files are NOT accessable through this drive M:
!

So far I enter a drive letter in the Remote Server/NAS options screen,
a 'Full remote physical path to music share' and 'Starting folder' on
the 'optional' filters because the program requires it.

So, I'm trying to understand the need for a drive letter pointing to
the actual music files, and if it is a way of filtering out unwanted
stuff, why does my catalog contain all the music and not only mp3
files?

SilverRS8;532790 Wrote:
When the starting folder is not used, you don't need a drive letter.

After some experimenting I've got the filtering with the starting
folder working. I had to remap the drive letter to another directory
level to make that work. That's great!

But I won't be using the filter option very often. I intend to make a
full catalog once, and then a monthly update by creating a catalog with
a specific start date.

So, I only want to use the 'From Date' in the optional filters and
leave the 'starting folder' empty.

Doing this will create the original ODBC error.

There is no way to remove the drive letter in the 'Remote Server/NAS
options' screen.

I think it's accidently working now because of an unintended
misconfiguration on my side.

So, suppose I want to create full catalogs (sometimes catalogs with a
specific From Date') and I do NOT have a drive letter mapped to any
music directory (because the music is on another machine) what options
do I need to set in AAC?

 Frank

The ODBC error is gone. I can make a catalog with only a 'From Date'
entered and leaving all other fields blank.

But I've noticed something else and I'm not sure if AAC is supposed to
do that:

1. I've been experimenting with the printing options (Maximum track on
row page and Maximum album rows per page) to see if I can print to PDF
without the occasional blank page.
2. Because of the size of my music collection I restrict the number of
albums by entering a 'From Date' (a full catalog takes about 30 minutes
to create).

But the first time I create a catalog after the printing options
change, AAC doesn't use the 'From Date'. I get a full catalog. The
second time I start AAC (without changing any option and leaving the
'From Date' unchanged) I do get a catalog from the set 'From Date'.

Subsequent runs of AAC with other dates give catalogs from the set
'From Date' until I change another setting.

Even changing the 'Header Background' on the Layout section produces a
full catalog at the first run and partial catalogs (starting at the set
'From Date') at subsequent runs.

Is this expected behaviour ?

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v3

2010-04-09 Thread MikeDelta

Frank,

I would like to use the 'Optional Filter From Date' option, but
whatever I put in that field, I get the following error (unless I leave
the field blank):

Error while creating AAC table in database.
Error number: -214721787
Error description: ODBC driver does not support the requested
properties.
Unable to continue.

... and then the program exits.

I'm using the required ODBC driver (5.1.6) and I'm running the latest
version of the Album Catalog Creator (V3.3rc)

I saw another posting with the same error a while ago in this thread
but I'm not sure if you're already working on a fix.

I use an English Windows XP with the dutch date/time format.

I've included the logfile.

Something I can do to help solve this problem?

SilverRS8;532239 Wrote:
Put a \ after the M: you use in the starting folder field and it should
work (let me know the outcome).

That worked great! The error message disappeared and the catalog was
created. It's funny that something unrelated to the date has this
effect.

About this drive letter:

My Squeezebox server runs on a different machine (running ubuntu linux)
and usually there is no drive letter mapped to the music directories.
When I first tried you program (I believe it was version 1.3) I
attempted the remote server option but I couldn't get it to run. Then I
mapped the m: drive to one of the music directories, entered the drive
letter and I got a result. Since then I map this drive letter just for
the purpose of creating an up-to-date catalog.

The funny thing is that the drive letter only points to the mp3
directory while the catalog is complete with flac, wma, aac, ogg and mp3
albums.

So, I'm wondering, do I need the drive letter at all? And if I do, how
come the catalog is complete with the other formats including the
coverart?

I can't remove the driveletter in the 'remote server/NAS options'
screen, the help text onscreen says I need the drive letter but the
'usage and configuration' information on your homepage doesn't mention
the drive letter at all. Did I miss some information?
