I've already tested running LMS in a debian virtual machine. I could
keep a compatible version of debian and run it that way.

2012-10-22 Thread Millwood

Before you turn the lights out, please update the software so we can
install and configure squeezeplay and the server without need to talk to
mysqueezebox.com.

Example. I just installed a new computer and installed squeezeplay. It
would NOT configure - claimed it could not contact mysqueezebox.com. I
then replaced the config files with the ones from my old machine, and I
have a working squeezeplay. Please Please fix this.

[slim] Podcast confusion

2012-03-14 Thread Millwood

There appear to be two podcast players, and I don't understand why.

Player 1. configured on the server settings podcast tab. accessed on
the web interface extra menu podcast entry. can't find it on the
controller at all.

Player 2. configured as an app on mysqueezebox.com and accessed in the
app menu on the controller or the web interface. works even when the
player is connected to the server, even though changing
mysqueezebox.com instantly changes the available list in the app.

Please explain.

I have been having problems lately with my Controller freezing. The last
time I did a factory reset I had a problem. After connecting to my
wireless network, it tells me the Controller is registered to my
account and I click Continue. So far, so good. It starts scanning for
players and here is where the problem begins. I get the Choose Player
screen. It tells me to Set Up Receiver. I have a SB3 Classic, not a
Receiver so of course no Receivers are shown on the screen to choose
from. I click on Skip this step, but nothing happens. It just hangs
here. Can anybody get me out of this loop? Thanks very much for your
 help.

I'm guessing. First, instead of skip, try the back button to get to
the normal menus. Since you don't have a receiver, I assume you have a
wireless network. You'll need to get the controller connected to your
wireless, using the networking page under advanced settings. Then find
the place where you connect to mysqueezebox, also I think under
networking. You'll need an ID and password, I think. (I'm guessing
the reset undid those settings, if not go to next). Now find the
choose player screen and see if you see your SB3.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox can only connect to wireless channel 1

2009-09-20 Thread Millwood

I don't know that you mean by change channel. You don't set the channel
on the SB3.

Sequence after a reset should be something like:

Choose wireless.

Choose North America. (Your wireless router is set to north america if
it offers the choice, isn't it).

See a list of SSID's. You did change the SSID of your router to be for
sure unique. Choose your SSID.

You will be asked to enter the security fact.

Tell it to acquire ip address automatically.

It should now connect to your network.

If something fails, say exactly at which step and what happens.

[slim] VBR mp3

Is there any way to correctly position VBR mp3 streams short of reading
from the beginning. I ask because it appears the SB doesn't get it
really right. 7.4 seems better, but that may be a superstition.

I do note that VBR files are reported as CBR in more info.

My sources of VBR files are Winamp CD rip and lame.

Re: [slim] VBR mp3

2009-09-13 Thread Millwood

Thanks Andy. My real, poorly stated question was - should I expect it
to work in 7.4, and how well.

I think you've said that it should, so I'll keep using it and open a
bug if I have a problem.

The thing that I was seeing in 7.3 was that I'd play maybe an hour into
a long track, and when I paused, it would restart nowhere near were it
had paused. And when I tried to find a spot whose time I knew (say 1
hour into a 2 hour track) I would wind up someplace else. I have not
seen that in 7.4, but that's very preliminary.

(These long tracks, if you're curious, are ripped from a good rtsp
stream from WBAA and converted to mp3 by lame.)

And finally - they do show up in more info as CBR. Does that mean I'm
messing up generating a good header?

Re: [slim] Can a power supply/DAC be causing interference?

2009-05-12 Thread Millwood

Just because your SB can associate with the wireless AP doesn't mean
that many packets are getting through. IMHO, the SB/SC protocols were
never very robust in the face of significant packet loss.

Also remember that the power supply for the new stuff might be the
culprit, particularly if its an external brick. Cheap switching
supplies are notorious radiators of interference. So when you unplug
make sure you unplug at the outlet.

Nonsense. Any large office runs multiple access points with the same

years. I run the two on different channels, but you can experiment
with that as well - one channel will work. For now, the controller
won't roam, so you have to force it to switch access points if you move

As for your question - IMHO, linux is much more reliable than windows.
I run Debian etch (waiting for the bugs to shake out before going to
lenny) and it would run forever if I didn't reboot once a month to fsck
the file systems. It will reliably restart itself is a power failure
takes it down. Only problem is the learning curve to get is set up
correctly.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox Classic + SB Controller ?

2009-01-14 Thread Millwood

One caveat. The controller is a wireless device. With the receiver,
you have two choices - connect to your home wireless network or use the
receiver as an adhoc wireless accesspoint for the controller.

The SB3 won't do that. You must have wireless network connectivity
where you plan to use the controller.

Re: [slim] SB3 can not connect to 2nd router when using 2 routers

2009-01-04 Thread Millwood

Don't quite understand your wiring.

What is the net socket.

And where are you plugging the other end of that wire into the
linksys.

The correct way to use a router (linksys) as an access-point and switch
is to.

1. Give it an address on the network implemented by the router that is
different from the router and NOT in the router DHCP range.
xxx.xxx.xxx.2 is a standard choice.

2. Turn off DHCP.

3. Set its wireless config the same as the router - with either the
same or a different channel. I use different channel.

4. Connect an ether net wire from one of the lan ports on the router
to one of the lan ports on the AP. The AP Wan port MUST NOT BE USED.

You should be able to reach the config pages of the AP by using the
address you gave it during the set up.

If you have control over the speedtouch router's address, change it to
the more standard 192.168.1.1 I have some vague memories about issues

Re: [slim] Need advise on setting up a new system

2009-01-02 Thread Millwood

I have a similar same situation.

I use a Duet for my main system. It lets me keep the electronics in a
closed cabinet - only the controller shows.

In the kitchen, we have built in speakers in the ceiling. I use a
T-amp to drive them and an SB3. In the kitchen, I am happy with a
fixed display of the SB3 which serves as a clock when the system is
off. I assume you want separate remotes at each location, because
otherwise you could go with a second receiver and use the one
controller for both. I wouldn't. (And of course, you can control the
SB3 with the controller as well as with its own remote).

My third system is a homemade (ugly) boom using the SB3 that got
replaced by my Duet, and some powered computer speakers mounted on a
board.

[slim] How is Amazon supposed to work

Brute force would be to factory reset the receiver (hold botton till it

There may be a less painful route - but there are lots of complaints

I also run two access points - but as a single wireless network. They
have the same ssid and security settings - although different

The only issue I have with this is that since the controller doesn't
know how to roam, you need to make sure it is talking to the right AP.
You can get it to connect to the strong/close one by going through the
wireless network page in advanced settings.

I've found that after messing with my network (i changed security) I
had to factory reset both the controller and the receiver to get things
working again.

Re: [slim] Help! SB3 drops out...Router Issue?

2008-11-09 Thread Millwood

Superstition

The SB wireless units, and particularly the controller, do not play
well in a mixed B-G network where B devices come and go, thus switching
the network from G to mixed.

I can't prove this, but in my case I can reproduce the controller going
off the net for a few minutes anytime I turn my B laptop on.

I've gone back to B only, which is in fact good enough for my
purposes.

In some of my earlier flailing, I had an SB3 that would go off the net
in the sense that it was associated, according to it and the router,
but could not be pinged and could not communicate. This was with a
Linksys WRT110. I haven't seen it with the replacement Netgear 824.

All this isn't very useful, I'm afraid, execept that if your laptop is
B only, try running the wireless B only and see what happens.

Re: [slim] Warning: Linksys WRT110 Rangeplus Wireless Router Squeezebox

2008-11-07 Thread Millwood

I've learned something that might be useful.

After returning the WRT110, I reinstalled my failing? WRT54G. It
behaved similarly. In reading the Tomoto (alternate firmware - I'm not
using it - I run the latest linksys) it suggested two things.

1. Don't run in B only mode if there are G devices around.
2. Don't enable frame burst (a WRT54G option) if you have more than 3
wireless devices.

Changing both, I got much better behavior. Still wide power variation,
but lowest not as bad.

I've now installed a Netgear WPN824V3, which seems to work somewhat
better maybe??? It doesn't have a frame burst option, by the way.

I way maybe??? because although the power is more stable, my max speeds
are down I think. (Things vary enough that its hard to get reliable
facts).

Re: [slim] Warning: Linksys WRT110 Rangeplus Wireless Router Squeezebox

2008-11-07 Thread Millwood

I returned the WRT110 before learning of the frame burst issue.

Also, I have 2 SB3, a receiver, a controller, and 2 wireless computers
on the network, and the issue may be multiple stations.

So far, the Netgear 824 seems OK but not much better than my old
WRT54G, which is now working again. I can get 2000kb reliable running
G on a station with 70% signal strength.

What I do see is more stable signal strength over time, although still
lots of swing. The above, in a few hours, sees a high of 90% and a low
of 66%.

As an aside, if I were working your network software, which I am not
competent to do without more learning than I have time for, I'd very
carefully review the lost packet protocol to make sure it was really
robust in the face of transient burst errors in the network. I say
this because, given the size of your buffers, which represent many
seconds of music, glitches seem to drop the stream more often than they
should.

Reinstalled my failing WRT54G and all the (new) problems are gone. So
I'm pretty sure the WRT110 is not something you want to try!

It's final trick was to suddenly change into a state in which all the
devices were seeing much lower power - 40% for the SB3 five feet under
the WRT110 instead of 90+. Unplugging/replugging the router cleared
it.

Based on other comments here and easy availabilty, I've order a
netgrear WPN824

Spoke to soon - it's back into that funny state.

Waking up SqueezeCenter ...
Connecting to SqueezeCenter ...

SB3 does NOT respond to pings.

Push and hold power till reboot and it reconnect on its own. There is
a DHCP exchange, for what its worth.

I'm running with DHCP reservation, so it always gets the same IP.

It seems as if its not really on the network but doesn't know its not.
Or alternately, the WRT110 is ignoring it.

Nothing in the logs. No recent DHCP, in particular.

Re: [slim] Warning: Linksys WRT110 Rangeplus Wireless Router Squeezebox

2008-10-28 Thread Millwood

I just got a WRT110 - didn't search the forum first :-(

I'm seeing a reconnect failure with my SB3 - something I used to see
but not in a long while with my now dead WRT54G

The SB3 gets into a state in which its screen is blank. If you press
power on, it says trying to wake up squeezecenter, trying to connect to
squeezecenter and then goes blank again.

It can't be pinged.

If you hold down the power button, it restarts, reconnects, and works.

Also - at the moment I'm running in B-only mode. I have a laptop with
a B only card, and B is good enough.

I am not yet sure if this only happens when the router restarts or by
itself. I've been playing with config and so restarting the router a
lot.

Whatever the problem with the WRT110, it would be nice if the SB3 saw
that it wasn't talking to the network and tried to reconnect.

(I'm running the router B-only since I have a B-only laptop. But I
think I had more trouble in B-G mode).

Firmware is 1.0.04 build 10 (sic). The fact that it's build 10 tells
me this is a work in progress.

Re: [slim] Wireless Interference - Channel Change not had impact, any other ideas?

2008-10-07 Thread Millwood

I have two access points in my home network. With the current firmware
on the receiver, if I run both at the same frequency, my network
collapses. I suspect something is wrong with the receiver firmware,
but I can't prove or even reproduce it.

[slim] Help me Hack Controller Screensaver

2008-09-29 Thread Millwood

I'm just not on the same page as the Slim designers.

I want my now playing screensaver to be the real now playing screen -
as if the screensaver code has pushed the home button enough times to
get to now playing.

So - if it's real easy for someone to point me at the lua code to hack,
including how to invoke the real now playing screen, I'd be grateful for
the help.

I don't have any real sense for how the controller works in the large
in terms of its control flow, which leaves me pretty hopeless for a
global change.

(I do hack the scanner to bring up the scanner on press of fwd/rew
rather than press hold, but that's a trivial change compared to this).

(Why do I want this?

1. So I get the clock and signal strength on the screen.
2. So I am never surprised by what happens when I press a button while
now playing.
)

[slim] Strange Receiver Hickup

2008-09-22 Thread Millwood

I recently moved my receiver - it's now 6 feet above the wireless access
point.

I first saw good signal - 70% plus or minus. Yesterday, suddenly, the
signal was 10-30! Moving it around did little. Power cycle did
nothing.

Today, as an experiment, I put an SB3 in the same place. 70% signal.
Then I power cycled the receiver again - and suddenly its back to 70%
+/-.

Has anyone seen this? And ideas what might be going on? Do I have a
potential hardware problem?

As an aside - to the SB3 and receiver use the same power supply?

Would that cause this intermittent (only once so far) failure? Right
now, its just fine, seeing 87% - which is what I'd expect given its

[slim] Receiver Amplifier Power Control

2008-09-20 Thread Millwood

I know this is an old topic, but I want to raise it again. I would
happily pay for a device that would plug into the digital output of my
receiver (which I don't use) and control my amplifier power. I suspect
the device would be cheap to make, and the firmware could be changed to
control it. I would think it could be made to pass through the digital
output for those who need it.

Power control either by a power switch, or by an IR emitter, would be
fine.

Any hope?

On of my SB3's has failed. The display is blank, and there is no audio

Sigh - 2.5 years is too short for a $300 device!

Re: [slim] Thread/Forum Read Marking Type

2008-07-08 Thread Millwood

Just one user's opinion.

I really liked the mode in which visiting one of the forums was
equivalent to marking it all read.

In the rare cases when I needed to try again, the last posted date/time
was adequate to find things that I hadn't seen - but normally I'd open
the forum, glance at the unread, choose which I was interested in, and
I was done.

I'd love to have the option to continue in that mode.

[slim] Lobby for full menu entry in controller

2008-07-02 Thread Millwood

See http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8217

Once you customize the controller main menu, it's a real pain to get to
any entries which are not shown and are not in the settings sub-tree.
You have to change the customization to show the entry, then use it,
then hide it again. And you have to navigate the sort of flat home
menu list to get to it - twice.

My proposal is that instead of forcing the home menu to contain
settings (which is of course done to avoid getting stuck) there should
be a new menu item - full menu (name subject to improvement) which
leads to the uncustomized menu tree.

One of the entries in that tree is settings, so you still can't get
stuck.

What full menu does, and maybe the easiest implementation, is to
suppress customization for a while - say until you pop out of it or go
to the home menu with the home key.

If you are constantly frustrated as I am - if you have too many entries
on your customized menu because you've put once a week stuff there -
then vote for 8217.

Re: [slim] Siwtching off Light on front of SBR

There is a tricolorled pluggin, but it doesn't really work for me (7.1).
It can change the current values of the led, and it seems to offer the
ability to change the actual light value associated with each state -
but the latter doesn't take.

Buy the way, turning off the receiver is pretty well hidden in the
controller menu tree. I use the powersave plugin, but I had to hack
the config by hand. It may be that the retro browser applet will let
you set the powersave stuff for the receiver.

[slim] Help with scanner hack thats stopped working

engages fast fwd mode, not the scanner.
