Re: [slim] Using Squeezebox Boom from overseas?
rpress wrote: You'll need some router that can create a VPN connection, and then use that VPN for the SqueezeBox. I'm not sure if you want to use the VPN for all your internet, probably not. I know a MikroTik could be configured to create a special connection for just the Squeezebox, but the configuration is not trivial. I hadn't realized that there are routers that can channel VPN connection until you mentioned it. You also said that I probably don't want to use VPN for all my internet, though. Is there a reason against it? I'm looking to buy a router that can run DD-WRT firmware, which can create VPN connection. But that means all my internet will go through VPN. [slim] Using Squeezebox Boom from overseas?
I've brought my Squeezebox Boom to an Asian country, where I'm now working. In order to access US-based internet contents that check the IP, I use what's called DNS Proxy, which will make the other side believe that I'm logging on from the states. It's a hit-or-miss. Some websites will see me as residing in the US, while others won't. Unfortunately, the services that I try to connect to with my Squeezebox Boom see right through the DNS proxy and tell me that this service is not available outside the U.S.. Is there anything that I can do? (If this was a service that I wanted to connect from a web browser, I can't heighten a notch and use VPN, which almost always succeeds in fooling the other side about the whereabouts of me.) Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!
So far, I like what I've seen in Orange Squeeze. There is one shortcoming that makes me hesitate to migrate from Squeeze Commander: an icon in the notification area that will let you quickly access the app from anywhere. Is this in the roadmap? Re: [slim] How does Apple AirPlay compare to SqueezeBox in functionality?
I just realized that one thing that I'll miss in substituting iDevice for SB is the favorites. Is there an app for iDevice that aggregates favorites across different services in the same way that the favorite function of mysqueezebox (or LMS) does? Conceptually, I think it can be done through the OS's share function. If done properly, such favorites aggregator can be even more versatile than mysb.com's favorite, as it can collect tracks or album from non-streaming service such as Shazam (music search app). [slim] How does Apple AirPlay compare to SqueezeBox in functionality?
I love my SB Boom, but what with its limited expandability (e.g., no Spotify, no Google Music) and its destined status as an orphaned platform, I'm thinking of alternatives already. How does AirPlay compare to SqueezeBox in functionality? I understand that with SB, mysqueezebox.com or LMS will operate as the server, whereas with AirPlay, your apple device (be it iPad or iPhone) will operate as the server. With the difference in the specific mechanism aside, will I be able to enjoy Rhapsody, podcasts and internet radios just as easily on AirPlay as with SB? In addition, will I be able to relay Google Music and Spotify from my i-device to AirPlay? If this is possible, then I think AirPlay has even better functionality than SB Boom. Pascal Hibon wrote: Spotify does work with an SB Boom. You can use Triode's Spotify plugin. This requires a local LMS server but it works just fine. Thanks for the info. Still, that wouldn't prevent me from looking into AirPlay as a SB replacement, since the biggest reason for it is SB's status as a destined orphan platform. Does Logitech run any RSS feed that announces release of new software/firmware updates? Many other firms do that so their customers can keep track of the updates. I was only made aware of the newest release (7.6.0) when my SB Boom all of sudden turned itself on and updated its firmware last night. (I didn't even know SB Boom could do that. cool!) Re: [slim] Can SB access NAS without the SqueezeCenter turned on?
Thanks everyone for chiming in. The depth of this thread is going way over my head. I have no idea what upnp is.. Well, then again, I had no idea what NAS was until a few days ago, when I started searching the internet. Basically, my wife and I would like to aggregate all our music files into one drive. I can let her transfer her music files in her laptop to my desktop or even my laptop, but I thought it would be more convenient if she could access the centralized storage regardless of whether my PC/laptop is turned on or off. Similarly, I thought it would be better if my SB Boom could access the network-attached central storage directly without having to negotiate through my desktop where the SqueezeCenter currently resides. [slim] Can PDA with WiFi function act as remote?

[slim] Can SB access NAS without the SqueezeCenter turned on?
I'm beginning to realize that all the music files must be stored in one folder in order for SB to access those files. Since my wife and I both have tons of music files on our separate notebooks, we are thinking of setting up what other people are describing as a NAS (network-attached storage) where we will store all our music files. In this regard, 1. Can SB access an NAS even when my PC is turned off (i.e., even when no SqueezeCenter is running)? 2. (This is probably appropriate for some other forum, but) Can anyone recommend a decent NAS kit? We wouldn't need a mission-critical NAS, since all we will need the NAS for is to store our music files. Thanks a bunch in advance. -- New Daddy New Daddy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20745 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54434 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
