Re: [slim] Transporter toslink output

2018-11-07 Thread barrygordon

Yes, that is what the Transporter does for DTS files which I have
converted to FLAC. And yes volume has to be set to 100% so nobody tries
to alter the gain. IIRC There was an option to do fixed output at 100%
just not sure where it is anymore, but since the DTS files play music
not white noise it must be set properly.

As background, many years ago When Slim Device was starting up, a did
work with them on controlling Slim Server and the players. I have 2
Squeezebox classics, 1 Squeeze Boom, 1 Squeeze Duet, and 1 Transporter.
The Transporter and the Duet is in my Home Theater. The Duet plays
throughout the house and the Transporter only in the Theater. When not
in the tehater I use Squeezepad on an iPad or iPend on an iPhone to
control the local (room based) player.

SlimServer runs on a Win 10 always on, platform, and the music files are
on an Unraid NAS. The Theater and all components are controlled by a
small PC (Asrock Bee Box) which is controlled by a Philips Pronto 9800
(Via Wi-Fi) as the Human Interface. The Theater is a full Dolby Atmos
configuration (7.4.1). All things in the house run on the house LAN
Which is a gigabyte LAN except for the mobile devices. When playing
music in the theater the Pronto has a page that fully controls the
Transporter using the CLI and HTTP interfaces to Slim Server. The
Theater has a screen that displays what is playing, and the 9800 can
show the Server lists (e.g. Artists, Albums, Current playlist) and allow
for control over them.

The Squeezebox in the Master bedroom uses the headphone output
(configured for IR, IIRC) to drive a small circuit which turns on the
amplifier whenever the Squeezebox is powered on. The speakers in that
room are Shehenian Obelisks which I considered the best music speakers
for the money when I bought the 30+ years ago. They still sound superb,
but that may be my ears.

My problem is, at my age I forget things, especially when they work all
the time. I just changed the Audio/Video processor (Anthem AVM 60) and
did not like the sound of the transporter playing Flac stereo files. I
just did a comparison between using Toslink (Anthem does DAC operations)
vs. Analog (Transporter DAC does decodin) and cannot hear any difference
(old ears again?. So in a very Pragmatic sense I am happy.

Re: [slim] Transporter toslink output

2018-11-07 Thread barrygordon

Thanks for the reply. I have my Transporter connected to an Anthem AVM
60 over Toslink. I do have some DTS 7 track recordings (all my music is
stored as FLAC files, but two different directories (DTS vs Stereo) I
have been thinking as to whether it would be better to feed the Anthem
over analog cables for the stereo and tell it to just pass through the
signal. For the DTS mterial I believe I need to use the digital output
to get the encoded channels decoded to all 5 or 7 channels. My problem
is that the sound is not where I expect it to be quality wise. Then
again i will soon be 80 years old and might just be me aging ears.

Does the Toslink output on the Transporter and other squeeze devices
pass the D/A conversion and just provide the digital file that is being

Hi Stefan,

I have multiple players and Squeezepad runs on my gen 2 iPad. I recently
bought an Amazon Echo which will connect to my iPad over Bluetooth. The
Echo supports AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Protocol). If you could
support that protocol on Squeezepad then I should be able to control
whatever player Squeezepad is attached to by speaking to the Echo. The
Echo will handle things like Play, Pause, Next, Previous, stop, resume,
restart. That would be a great feature as the Amazon Echo is really
taking off. I have no idea what is involved in getting control from the
iPad kernel to field the commands transmitted over Bluetooth AVRCP.
Amazon claims the Echo will control any player running on the iPad, but
Squeezepad is a little different as in my case it is not playing the
music on the ipad, but rather controlling a squeeze player. I know
there is a way to have Squeezepad play on the iPad itself and was going
to see if the Echo could control that, but I don't remember how to do
that as it is not in the Player list. I never use the iPads to play
music from the Squeeze server as the audio quality is terrible.

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2012-06-24 Thread barrygordon

I sent you an eMail on this same subject. The latest version(s) of
Squeezepad treat the volume control differently than prior versions
based upon whether the audio of the player is set to a fixed volume or
not. The action when not a fixed volume is the desired action and is
what Logitech has implemented for both scenarios in its app.

When set to a fixed volume, which is needed for encoded material such as
DTS tracks, The current implementation only allows for tapping the end
points of the volume slider and even then it is a very sporadic
operation. The action when not set to a fixed volume allows dragging
with a very smooth result. There should be no difference.

Logitech (actually Slim Systems) went out of their way several years ago
when I was working with them on encoded music tracks. The intent was to
have a complete pseudo volume available so that the values could be used
to control an audio processors volume. That still operates correctly.
What is not working is the adjusting of the volume when set to fixed
volume. In fact it is just the implementation of the taps instead of
the smooth drag that is causing me the problem.

It seems that if the volume is set to its prior value (last session),
then the first tap seems to reset it to cause the server to issue a
pseudo volume of 100%. Good thing I have Max volume limits set in my
Audio processor!!!

Until this is fixed I can not use Squeezepad to play encoded music.

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2012-06-24 Thread barrygordon

I use the XAP plugin which does UDP broadcasts from the Squeeze Server
so that any system listening on the LAN can react to what the Squeeze
server is doing. There are messages for volume state, mute state, time
remaining on the track, song changes, cover art etc. I just use the ones
for Power and volume.

Since my Theater which is also my High End Audio listening room is
controlled by a PC (which is controlled by the iPad and Pronto's) it
was logical to have the PC control the Audio processor based on XAP
sequences. It was very nice using the slider to be able to use a
gesture and listen to the volume smoothly change in real time to the
desired value. The Logitech SqueezeBox app for the iPad does it just
that way, but it is not quite as nice as the Squeezepad overall.

[slim] softsqueeze 3.7

2009-07-21 Thread barrygordon

Can I run softsqueeze automatically on the same PC that squeezecenter is
on? I would like to just put a shortcut to it in windows startup.
SqueezeCenter 7.3.3 is running as a service. When I do this it seems to
start but does not seem to connect to SqueezeCenter. It does not seem to
react to clicks on the pseudo remote

I would also like to be able to run it minimized. I have set the
correct properties in the shortcut but whenever I start it it always as
a normal screen as opposed to minimized. Is this a bug or am I doing
something wrong.

[slim] sound quality

2009-04-25 Thread barrygordon

My assumption is that if I play my music out of the optical connection
on any Slim Devices player there should be no difference in sound as
DAC quality of the player does not come into it. Am I correct in that
assumption? That is, a $2000 Transporter and a $120 Receiver should
sound exactly the same as far as their optical outputs are concerned.

Re: [slim] sound quality

Perhaps I wasn't being clear. Lets forget about the Audio chain after
the player for the moment. Will the exact same digital stream be put
out by all of the players to their digital outputs i.e. optical or
coxial. I guess that is my question.

I own every type of player that Slim Devices sells, but I have very old
ears. In theory however, in the configuration I am discussing, the DAC's
in the player should not be used. There should just be a digital format
conversion from FLAC to LPCM out of the digital output, or am I missing
something? If it is just a format conversion then all digital outoputs
should be the same.

Okay guestions bring answers and ansers bring more questions. I
understand about the 24/96 vs 16/48, but other than that...

Addressing the connector - so what. It is a digital stream. If all
the bits get transmitted with negligible jitter ( a whole other
discussion, as I do not believe in it at the rates we are talking
about) who cares what the connector or medium of transfer (photons vs
electrons) is. Why/how can it make a difference.

I am a digital (hardware and software) engineer with 47 years in the
field before I retired, So I know that subject fairly well.

Re: [slim] sound quality

2009-04-25 Thread barrygordon

dsdreamer, thank you for the very well constructed and intelligent reply
(no denigration to other replies intended). Yes with clock
reconstruction as you indicated, there is the case for some waveform
edge jitter, but as I said I have old ears so maybe I just waste money
on my toys.

The downstream audio is handled by the new Cary Cinema11A which IMHO
has a superb sound and is fed into an outlaw 7 channel amp into 7
acoustically matched BW speakers. Bass is done by a Velodyne servo
sub.

I do have a large collection of ripped DTS tracks and some very high
end multichannel audio from some of the smaller labels. I buy DTS
multichannel CD's whenever I can.

I do use the Transporter in the Music room/theater, Squeezeboxes in the
master bedroom and for whole house audio, a receiver for the guest
bedroom and a squeezebox for the pool deck.

All music is controlled by a set of Pronto PRO remotes running an
application that provides full control and full visual feedback from
the Squeezecenter of all players.

Once again, thanks to all who replied.

[slim] CLI and zap

2007-08-24 Thread barrygordon

I am using the CLI interface over TCPIP SlimServer version 6.5.2

I send a zap command for an entry in the now playing queue(e.g
playerid playlist zap 5)

I have listen turned on. I get back the echo of the command as I
expected, followed by a slim server message stating that the song I
just zapped has been deleted just as if I did a delete command of the
same index number, followed by a status (to which I have subscribed)
showing the now playing queue count down by 1. I was under the
impression that a zap of a single song did not delete it from the now
playing queue, but just made an entry to the zapped list.

Is the behavior I am seeing correct? Is there a setting that controls
this behavior (zapped song is deleted from NPQ) ?

Just want to understand

[slim] Pronto PRO Slim Server Controller

2007-08-22 Thread barrygordon

I wasn't sure where to post this as it is not a plugin, it is not a mod,
and it does not fit the tone of DIY; so here it comes.

I hae been working on setting up my house so that the Pronto PRO will
be the only Remote in the house. I am almost there.

There are three main areas I am concerned with:

(1) Theater: Replacement of the IR based iPronto with the TCPIP based
Pronto PRO with no Extenders in the loop. The theater is controlled by
a PC and the PC talks to the Pronto PRO over TCPIP doing in effect IR
Emulation

(2) Music; A fully mobile control system for the Slim Players which
run with Slim Server, their companion Music server software. The
control system must allow me to do selection (multiple ways) and full
control over what is playing with a reasonable graphic interface. It
must be usable from anywhere in the house including the pool area as
one of the players drives the whole house music system.

(3) Control of the Homeseer System which runs lighting, HVAC, CallerID,
Security, the Pool, and a myriad of other subsystems to provide full
ouse control

I am well along and have had some excellent support and help in the
graphics and testing area from LowPro. I decided to share some pics of
the music control system. These are digital photos, and photography is
not one of my strong points

The Main screen is the initial screen of the activity where you select
which player you want to deal with. The select screen allows you to
select what is to go into the Now Playing List. You can do it by
artist, album, genre, saved playlists and songs.

The Info screen shows you the Now playing list which you can edit, the
Now Playing song and the next up song along with the modes of the
player (repeat, shuffle, sleep). It is dynamically updated by the
server as things change (there is actually a song progress bar that is
updated every 2 seconds or so); and if the Pronto goes to sleep
(happens a lot when I listen to my music as I am often reading, or I
doze off) it fully recovers the current state as soon as the pronto
wakes up.

LowPro is a stylus man and I am a button man so there are configuration
options for how you want the system to operate. In general both the
Stylus and buttons are provided for.

The Icon on the upper left corner is a picture of the Slim Devices
Squeezebox and shows system status, going as far as an animated marquee
display when playing a song.

I am distributing this activity (needs a little more tweaking) but only
on request and with a very simple set of rules.

If you are interested drop me a line. I will answer questions on how I
did things and the prontoScript is not too hard to follow once you get
the hang of the model I use.

[slim] ZAP and CLI

2007-08-16 Thread barrygordon

I have searched the threads on information on zapped, digested it all
and am still confused. Help appreciated.

I send a ZAP command over the CLI interface. SlimServer places a
refrence to the zapped song into the zapped playlist and then deletes
the zapped song from the curent now playing list. It is that last part
that confuses me. I thought it just placed it into the zapped playlist
so you could use the zapped playlist as a holder of songs you needed to
review etc without them being removed from the current playlist.

is there an option to do what I want (not remove the zapped song from
the playlist) or is the behvior fixed as I have observed it.

reply appreciated.

[slim] Philips Pronto PRO

2007-08-12 Thread barrygordon

My effort for a complete control system for Slim Server and Slim devices
using the Philips Pronto PRO has just about finished beta testing. It
functions on the Pronto PRO (TSU9600) running in a wireless (Wi-Fi)
environment and supplies two way control/feedback to control Slim
Device players. At this time it does not support the construction and
editing of playlists, leaving that up to the WEB interface. It
provides a fully graphic interface with stylus and/or hard key control
depending on the users choice.

The initial screen searches and discovers all players and then allows
the user to select the player to deal with. Setting options allow
automatic selection of a player.

The second screen shows the status of the selected player (Sleep,
Shuffle, Repeat, Now Playing (Title, Artist, Album, Genre), Next Up
(Title, Artist, Album, genre), song duration, Queue position, time
remaining and the current play list. All of the obvious controls are
provided (Stop, Play, Next, Prior, Pause, Browse, GoTo, and Playlist
traversal.

The third screen provides for selection of what is to be played by
artist, album, genre, playlist. General filtering is not provided.

If you have a good Wi-Fi setup in your home, this control system will
run any and all of the slim players from anywhere in the house, or of
you are geeky enough and know what you are doing from any wi-fi point
in the world. Unfortunately, while you can control the players from
Morocco hearing the music in Morocco is a bit of a different problem.

If you are interested in a copy contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There is no charge, but there are some rules regarding use and
distribution.

[slim] Transporter Question.

2007-06-17 Thread barrygordon

When going through the transporter manual it states that if you
press Play while displaying Genre, artist, or album; transporter plays
all of the songs for the displayed artist, album, or genre.

My transporter does not do that. If I press Play while set to the
artist Sting for which I have three albums for a total of 32 songs,
it only queues up one album - 9 songs. I also noticed an entry for
All Songs under the list of albums for the artist. Pressing play
while displaying all songs does indeed queue up all the songs for
that artist.

Is the software wrong and will it be fixed, or is the documentation
wrong. I really would prefer it to operate the way it is documentd.

Any body know the answer?

[slim] running multiple servers on same machine

2007-04-14 Thread barrygordon

My problem situation.

My music library consists of DTS CD's ripped to FLAC in a folder
E:\Music\DTS, and regular audio CD's ripped to MPG in a folder named
E:\Music\MPG.

If I am Listening in the Theater/Music room through the Transporter, I
want the DTS music available so the Server has as it's library location
E:\Music. The Theater/Music Room audio processor handles DTS and other
encoded formats.

If I am listening in the House in general or the Master Bedroom I wish
to exlude the DTS encoded FLAC files since the Audio system for those
areas does not handle encoded streams, but rather analog 2 channel
stuff (It is background music). Putting a DTS file into an analog
audio system just results in a load Hissing sound.

To eliminate the DTS encoded files the only thing I have come up with
(not yet done, just thiking about it) is to run 2 servers one using the
library at E:\Music and the other the Library at E:\Music\MPG.

Can I run two Slim Servers on the same machine? If so How?

Is there another way that I am not seeing to do what I need?

Any and all help appreciated.

Re: [slim] running multiple servers on same machine

2007-04-14 Thread barrygordon

I have a bad habit, first I post then I search/research

I see this question has been discussed but I see no definitive
reolution. I see refrences to bug 3591 and 3592 which seem to be
closed.

In my home The slim players (one transport and one squeezebox) are
controlled by software running on PC's. In the music room there is a
large screen display in HD of what is going on (albums, playlists, what
is playing, state, etc.) In the house in general each room has an in
wall touch screen which has the same info and can control the player.
All touch screens except the one in the Master bedroom control the
Transporter, the Touchscreen in the Master Bedroom controls the
squeezebox located there.

This means we almost never touch the players, but rather control them
through the automation interfaces I have built.

I have plenty of room on the House Music server to run multiple Slim
Servers. Ideally I would like to run different server names with
either different ports (binding multiple IP's to a single NIC) or
different server names with the same IP's but different port
addresses.

Is this possible? Is anyone doing it? If so, How did you do it?

Re: [slim] Fat Gooey for Slim Server

2007-02-08 Thread barrygordon

I have added some features to enable Playlist construction and fixed
some bugs. The current version is at my web site
(www.the-gordons.net). There is now an expand command to expand any
library listing (eg artists) down to songs so they can be selectively
added to the playlist.

Ther is also now a screensaver that is a standard windows screensaver
that will show you what is currently playing. In addition if the
player is off it displays the cover art stored in the library as
thumbnails.

The only major issues reported are a failure when slim server is not
running on a Windows system (I feel this is a Slim Server issue as it
crashes with certain CLI sequences) and an issue with displaying
diacritical marks in UTF-8
Feedback appreciated.

Re: [slim] Fat Gooey for Slim Server

2007-02-04 Thread barrygordon

Skunk et al.,

FAT Gooey is completely separate from my Home Automation system. They
just have a lot of code in common (the main TCP/IP code and command
handling) The program should run on anything that runs VB6. That is
what it is written in. It needs the socket controls from
Windows/System and some others most of which may be in Win CE.

I did not do Drag drop but I have implemented something that should
meet your needs (see Expand in the new version I just posted). When
I do the screen saver it will basically look like the top frame, plus a
copy of the artwork floating around the screen. That is how it appears
in my HT so I have most of the code.

The new version makes a lot of cosmetic changes, eliminates the use of
the font Arial Narrow (Uses Arial). I may go back to Arial Narrow
but set all of the text boxes to be sized for Arial since if Windows
can not find Arial Narrow it uses Arial. It adds a command called
expand which will expand a selected artist, album or Genre to a song
list for movement of individual songs to the Cureent Play list. The
Library list now allows for multiple selections (shift for range
selection and control for item select/deselect) to simplify Add.

Let me know what you think

[slim] Fat Gooey for Slim Server

2007-02-03 Thread barrygordon

I was not sure where to put this so I decided to try here.

I just finished a program which provides a Windows Graphical interface
to control players connected to Slim Server. The program communicates
only with Slim Server and does not communicate with any player. It is
reasonably fast with what I consider to be a rich interface. others
may disagree. I am not a graphic artist.

The program has been tested on a network with two players (Transporter
and Squeezebox)running under Windows XP Pro SP2. There is no reason
why it should not run on any Windows system as it uses no XP specific
capabilities. The program is fully documented and is available both as
a full installation package and a set of files.

The program resides on my web site www.the-gordons.net. Seek and Ye
Shall Find. Feedback and comments appreciated. Please - READ THE
DOCUMENTATION.

assuming you changed the IP address in the file to yours.

In my world, all of the equipment is on my side of the firewall, NAT.
If you can get to the slim server from you players and they are on the
same network as the app, we have a stumper. The CLI port is 9090 your
host of SLIM Server must have that port available to be connected to.

Re: [slim] Fat Gooey for Slim Server

2007-02-03 Thread barrygordon

To the fellows having problems: Did you download the installation
package or just the files. I just took a look and the installation
package includes a couple of programs for Windows that I thought were
on every system but perhaps not. In particular:

mswinsck.ocx
SocketX.OCX

which have to do with socket operations.

If you did not try the installation version please do and let me know
if that solves the problem. If you did use the installation version
then I need to do more homework.

Once an installation is done, then updates can just be of the exe.

Re: [slim] Fat Gooey for Slim Server

2007-02-03 Thread barrygordon

To all my beta helpers. I really appreciate the help. As you can
imagine It works fine for me, I lost my arrogance many years ago.
Writing code for others to use can be so humbling. F Brooks (a major
player in the software world at one time), said that the difference in
cost between a program, something only its author can use, and an
application something anyone can use is ten fold.

Skunk: Please send me your ini file, I want to check some things. I
assume you have just one player, but the player is not selected in the
players list which is wrong. On seeing only one player it should
select it in the players list and therefore the screens should expand.

dd: hmmm, do not see why yet. If you can run a test, send me your ini
file and the full diaglog file. It rebuilds it whenever FAT Gooey
starts.

Skunk,

I updated the web site (Files download only not the installation
package) with a new version. It should fix your problem (so far). What
kind of system are you running the slim server on? Windows or other?
If other what kind? It seems Fat Gooey crashes slim server for those
not running on a windows machine.

Skunk,

Also I see the text is not fitting well. Do you have the Arial Narrow
fonts installed? I guess they are not as common as I thought they
were. I need to look at the sizing of text and the fonts I select.

Re: [slim] Fat Gooey for Slim Server

yes I had a badly formatted piece of code. The version on the web site
(files) fixes it. I will also reWork all of the text to use Arial as
opposed to Arial Narrow. I like Arial Narrow as long text then shows
up, but no big deal. probably post it tomorrow.

I am going to take a break and catch up on some TV.
Need to do a lot tomorrow before Super bowl as SO comes home tomorrow.

Re: [slim] Fat Gooey for Slim Server

2007-02-03 Thread barrygordon

Skunk,

I will add a revisions log to my web site as I make changes. I will
look at the exit issue, did not notice that on my system, but then
again I never looked(:-) I am changing the font from arial narrow to
arial and resizing the text and label windows. I assume you have Arial
as that is what your system defaulted to when it did not see Arial
Narrow.

On my Theater system it does handle Album art so I have the code, but
only shows it when the screen saver (which I have not ported over
yet)is operating. What would you like done with album art? Thumbnails
instead of a list when viewing albums in the library frame? I did that
for my DVD's but then found most people just wanted to see the titles
with the ability to show a detailed infor screen on the DVD. I could
do that for the CD, providing the tracks have full tags with all the
info. In my DVD system I (actually DVD profiler) pull all info from a
DVD database.

With regard to the playlists and drag/drop anything is possible. I
assume you would like to be able to pull up albums (filtered) expand to
songs/tracks and then drag/drop? Right now you can add to the Current
Play List Whole albums or all content of an artist), re arrange it
(move delete) and then save it. I guess expanding a selected item in
the library would be a good start. I will do that next week
