[slim] MusicIP Replacement

2009-05-23 Thread dwilliams01

Since it seems pretty likely that MIP is going away (maybe to be reborn)
does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement?

Re: [slim] 7.3 looks good, seems stable

I think that controller playback will be beta even when 7.3 releases
but I've used it a few times and find it to have very good sound
quality and it makes moving around the house when you can't have the
house systems on a real pleasure...

never have a problem, but no more than once a month or less.

I also use Belkin pre-n. Essentially, never a drop problem. I think
that the n-based access points really up the reliability and certainly
up the range. I know of others that have had major problems with
reception with b and g level access points and have upgraded to n based

Re: [slim] PlayStation 3 browser and the SC Web UI

2008-11-20 Thread dwilliams01

What I wanted was just the web ui to work - don't need the streaming,
I've got an sb3 for that. Essentially, I thought it might be nice to
have on during a party, etc. to display the album that is playing.
Also useful to not have to get to a computer if I want to use the full
UI instead of the controller from time to time.

Re: [slim] PlayStation 3 browser and the SC Web UI

Well, sounds like I'll have to give it a try, anyway. Thanks! I will
have a wired 1g network to the unit but I doubt that it will be much
faster. Still may beat going to the computer. I wonder if a handheld
skin would work well just using the remote to scroll around instead of
a keyboard, etc. too.

I was planning on using my sb3 to actually do the music playing - just

nice to have a video server, though - I'll have to take a look at the

Thanks!

[slim] PlayStation 3 browser and the SC Web UI

2008-11-17 Thread dwilliams01

I'm thinking of getting a PS3 soon (mainly for the Blu-Ray). One of the
things that I noticed was the browser capabilities of the unit. Has
anyone tried using the SC web UI on it? Any particular skin?

Jumping up a usage level, what I'm also really looking for is something
that looks as cool as a windows media player system browsing through the
albums graphically. I always figured that I'd have to get a quiet linux
box with wireless keyboard/mouse and hook it up to the AV Reciever to do
something like this but the ps3 will already be there...

[slim] Off Topic - Logitech Marketing e-mail

2008-09-05 Thread dwilliams01

This is completely off topic, sorry, but I thought that it might be
possible that someone here knows...

I just got an e-mail from logitech: logitechmktg at logitech dot
com that had some sort of announcement about a webcam contest. It was
kind of difficult to tell, really, since the e-mail was in Dutch and
I'm essentially a single-language American.

So I'm thinking that I've got a profile somewhere that has a setting
messed up a bit and I was wondering where I might find it to correct
it.

By the way, the contest does sound interesting (I have a Dutch
co-worker that read parts of it too me) - something about sending in
your interesting stories about how you use a webcam and you could win a
webcam?

A bit of a guess here, but your problem might be related to some

If it is a small space then I think that it is intentional. I think
that the there was some discussion about the space character becomming
smaller with the new font a while back - but it has been a while now.
It is sort of a compromise, but things are not totally strung together
and I've not been bothered by it, I guess.

inside). Also, if it might has anyone built one?

Re: [slim] Sound quality difference CD player vs SB3 FLAC playback?

2008-03-09 Thread dwilliams01

I've got a Dennon DVD 3910 and when I first got my SB3 I did some
side-by-side and blind tests. I made sure that the player had
processing turned off by using the Direct and Pure Direct modes.
There seemed to be a difference between normal and the direct modes
of the player (it was doing something), but I couldn't tell a
difference between the player's direct modes and and the SB3. I always
had the Reciever's (Denon AVR-4306) processing turned on to adjust for
balance, timing, room accoustic handling, etc. I also make sure that
the SB3's volume control doesn't do anything to the digital outputs -
not sure if that would have any impact on precieved sound quality or
richness, though, if the end volume was the kept the same.

I also ripped the CDs to flac using EAC and checked with AccurateRip to
confirm a good rip. I COULD tell a difference between the highest
bitrate mp3 and a CD every time.

On the pratical side it matters little what is right, it is your ears
and perception that is important - perhaps you could adjust your
reciever to process the sound to make it better to your ears? In the
past I've liked modes like Jazz Club, etc. because they give a warmer
feel...

Re: [slim] Off Topic - SqueezeVideoServer??

I'd be happy if it would keep me from having to wade through a pile of

Yes, it does the i-radio stuff as well, but I have Tivo for that on the
video side. This would be simply for the library portion. Hopefully
that would cut down on the format complexity.

Thanks for the pointers!!!

I've been so successful in moving all of my CDs to flac now I'd love to

[slim] Unknown Artist when it isn't

2007-12-01 Thread dwilliams01

I've got one album that always shows up under Unknown Artist when the

Album Artist is flagged as Unknown so the album shows up in SS under

how to change this particular tag.

Does anyone know of a package that will allow changing the Album Artist

[slim] LIbrary/Directory Organization - Seasonal Music

2007-11-04 Thread dwilliams01

Getting close to tis the season again. Does anyone have any suggestions
for organizing seasonal music? Is there some way to have all of your
christmas music available, but ensure that it isn't picked in July? I
tried searching the topics for christmas but too many people are asking
for christmas presents here to find this, unfortunately, so please
forgive me if this has already been discussed to death.

How do people keep this broken out, if they do? I suppose I could
setup an entirely independent SC Server but that seems a bit like
overkill.

I'm using SC 7 and MusicIP as well so if there are any features there
that make it easier that you could tell me that would be great!

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox

I'd love to have one that was small enough to put into carry-on luggage,
etc. Great for hotels, cabins, etc. when travelling. Probably smaller
than what a lot of people would think of as a traditional boombox, but
still be able to project decent sound. Certainly need to have it
easily rechargable. Currently around the house I have a few wireless
speakers - the problem with them is that you have no control or display
of what is playing.

Re: [slim] New Device - Headless SB Remote Display/Control

2007-06-18 Thread dwilliams01

Been away for a few days - sorry for the delay in responding.

It was a few years ago when Belkin first came out with mimo-style
pre-n, not the current draft n. It had security options that my old
G hub didn't support. My laptop with built-in b didn't support it
either. They probalby do now, I've no idea and no real interest in it
either. There is no point in designing a new device using old standards
- as people have pointed out there probably isn't much in the way of a
signifant price difference, just a simplicity/efficiency one.

My pre-n certainly appears to me to have much better range and
reliability than my old G hub. Not a scientific test, but it has been
confirmed with multiple devices (using the belkin pre-n cards and hub)
vs the old G hub that I had for a while. It went through walls much
better, no dead spots and null zones in the house and even work further
out into the yard. So speed isn't the only thing to consider.

Re: [slim] New Device - Headless SB Remote Display/Control

2007-06-16 Thread dwilliams01

From a speed point of view, 11n might not be needed but from a
compatibility point of view it is. At least I setup my pre-n network
to use security not available in b or g so they aren't compatible. I
wouldn't want to add another wireless hub with a lower level of
security and it would be a pain to create stuff like an untrusted
subnet, etc.

I'd even use it in the same room as the sb because its display can't
be read from very far away.

If it had a big enough display it would be very useful for picking
albums to play and other functions that you now tend to turn on a
computer for.

It should have a screen that can be read outside in bright sunlight as
well...

I guess I'm thinking of more of a hand-held type of device so it
wouldn't have to respond to the remote control.

Thanks.

[slim] Playlist Conversion Utilities

Re: [slim] Logitech Branding

2007-04-02 Thread dwilliams01

I guess that I would be considered one of the new arrivals. I just
recently discovered SlimDevices and Squeezebox - after it was acquired
by Logitech, as it turns out. I found out about it from a BestBuy MP3
player with Rhapsody that my wife bought at Best Buy - sorry. :)
The SlimDevices and Squeezebox names don't do much for me, truthfully.
Since I don't have the history they don't evoke a sense of high-end
audio - or maybe it is just that I'm not a big fan of accordion music.
And transporter is a movie about several car chases...I liked it, but it
doesn't sound like audio equipment to me.
Ironically the Logitech name does mean high-end equipment to me - their
trackball has certainly saved my hand over the years and I don't know
how I (or my wife) would be able to operate our AV equipment nearly as
efficiently without our several Harmony remotes (discovered after they
were acquired by Logitech, but not through Logitech).
The Logitech experience with my Harmony remotes has been very good and
they seem to want to make sure to take the time to properly support
their customers. The same can be said for their trackball when I had
to call them several years ago when upgrading computers with different
ports.
All in all, to me, the Logitech brand was a bonus and the promise of
more to come. I would suggest to them that the existing experienced
users be consulted with special focus groups, early access, advisory
groups, etc. There is a wealth of knowledge to be drawn on and a lot
of boundaries to be pushed back, etc.
