Re: [slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community

2017-01-11 Thread exile

thanks to those that think the thread is helpful.

Arniceous, much of what you said originally was misleading and that's
the annoying part. Sonos isn't an open source product like LMS but it's
also not a closed product like itunes or Apple products. It's not an
Apple product and it really doesn't operate as an Apple type product.
It's pretty robust in what it offers and it isn't restrictive in my mind
at all.

For me, I needed a product that consistently works with streaming
services. I also wanted to steer away from the endless tweaking and
maintenance that my LMS system required. If LMS had easily co-existed
with Spotify on my system I wouldn't have switched.

I've dealt with digital music servers for long enough to realize that
there'll always be some technical issues but at least for now I have a
multi-room system that works well and without dropouts and to me that's
priceless.

slightly annoying but whatever.

the point of this thread was first and foremost to thank this community
because it has served me well for over a decade and secondarily I wanted
to say that I switched to sonos because I have abandoned localized music
files for a streaming service.

I also thought it could be helpful for anyone in the squeeze community
that has been struggling with Spotify and LMS to think in terms of
switching to Sonos. My LMS server was not consistently working with
spotify. I now have four rooms of sonos and I have zero streaming
problems and to me that's worth the switch alone. The added bonus is
that the sonos server operates very similarly to the LMS and so I don't
feel as though I've sacrificed much by abandoning squeeze.

But go ahead and bash away at sonos and my decision if that's what you
want to do.

yes, that's the trade off with sonos. no display screen but it has
volume control on the top of each speaker and it has most of the same
features as squeeze ( i.e., alarms, sleep timer, etc.) so losing the
display screen isn't such a big sacrifice to me.

To clarify, the Sonos Connect is basically the equivalent of a
squeezebox but with no display screen. Most of the other Sonos products
are a hybrid speaker and wireless streaming device and again none of the
Sonos products have display screens. You can buy the Sonos speakers as
single units or pair them together to make true stereo speakers for a
room.

And Sonos also offers all of the same features as squeezebox radio.

with the transition to streaming as my primary source of listening the
fact that Sonos isn't as well set up to play all varieties of music

Re: [slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community

2016-12-28 Thread exile

i know that for many others out there the LMS/Spotify partnership is
great so I can only speak to my own experience.

my system was two squeezebox3's and two squeezebox2's with a dedicated
mac mini server running on a fast (average of 90mbps) wireless network,
I ran into recurring problems getting the spotify streams to play on one
box and way too many problems having multiple boxes play spotify in
sync. For me, the lack of consistency with spotify was the final straw.
I would've much rather stayed with Squeezeboxes (the cost alone to go
sonos is brutal but more importantly I'm giving up ten years of
trackstat ratings and stats.) but I no longer have the patience to
troubleshoot squeeze server issues.

Over the holiday, I spent a week with my brother-in-law who has a sonos
system for 5 rooms and in the course of playing spotify music for seven
days we ran into zero problems with syncing or playing any and all
tracks and that sealed the deal for me. Also, the fact that there's no
real future development of the squeeze product line also helped me make
the move.

[slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community

2016-12-28 Thread exile

So after more than a decade of dedicated squeezeboxen life I find myself
moving onto a Sonos system. Therefore, I simply want to thank this
entire community because it's the folks here on this forum that made my
squeezebox audio listening experience so rewarding.

The true power of the squeeze server was it's open source structure and
community plug in development. I loved using a variety of plugins to
customize, organize and generally focus my listening experience.

Big thanks to:

michael herger, greg brown, richard titmuss and Gordon Harris for their
hard work.

And the two people that completely transformed how I listened to and
used my squeeze system: Pippin and Erland.

I move onto Sonos now which I know will not completely replace my
squeeze system but hopefully it will advance my music listening
experience. The main reason I finally switched is because I no longer
need to listen to my own music. Spotify pretty much satisfies all of my
listening needs and Sonos just simply works much better with spotify.

Thanks for all of the great listening over the years...

a non-issue for me.

my advice-sell off the cd collection to a music store and use the money

with all due respect snarlydwarf, I think you're wrong.

i too work in the television business. i'm an editor of tv shows.
People want easy access to media. The itunes store has proven that. So
now we are moving from music to video due to technological
advancements. There's simply no point in trying to fight the
inevitable. Ease of use dictates what will be the future.

as soon as someone makes a Hulu type product that allows viewers to
easily pick what they want to watch when they want to watch it and on
whatever tv they want to watch it on then it is as good as done.

The old model of letting some giant conglomerate tell me when and where
i can watch my entertainment and at the same time charging me a fortune
for that dictatorship is nearly dead.

local programming will survive just like movies survived tv and
videotape and later dvd's. i could care less if i watch local
programming on the web or through a cable box or rabbit ears.

the core problem is that people are always afraid of change and I think
sadly for those that work at local tv stations, the old model of local
tv will have to change radically. i'm kinda shocked that local tv still
cranks out the amount of programming that it does. I'm in san francisco
so we have 4 local channels doing at least 3 newscasts a day. talk
about overkill.

the broadcast model is changing in a revolutionary way and thank god

i love how you refute everything I say. nice.

i think one point that we both can agree on is that while most of
television already caters to the lowest common denominator-
i.e.-anything on E! network, quality tv is still to be found-i.e-
almost anything on HBO.

if there's an audience for quality tv, then it will continue. and it
will continue in whatever medium delivers the product.

and it can be debated whether getting local programming is a good thing
but rest assured local tv folks will figure out a way to continue
providing a horrendously crappy product which is local news. those
traffic reports that serve about 10 people in a community of millions
will keep on coming because the sales department will always find a
local sponsor to slap a logo in the corner of the traffic helicopter
shot.

toby10, i think you're right in that the networks relationship with the
affiliates needs to change.

People are watching the networks programming because its a popular
branded item. I think most folks could care less if those network shows

The local stations will need to take into account how people are going
to be watching tv product in the near future.

At the same time, companies like comcast should also be prepared for
the shift. I've yet to meet a person who thinks that the current cable
tv structure is a good thing. 500 channels? why? most people watch

change is gonna come either way. it would be unfortunate if the tv biz

the future of tv is complete freedom of choice made possible by

I would think that craigslist would be your best bet but the sb1 is now
quite ancient so maybe the market for it has dried up. maybe you could
give it away to someone.

best of luck.

Re: [slim] Best way to sell my Squeezebox v1?

2010-01-05 Thread exile

Two big limitations with SB1:

1. It can't operate without your squeezecenter server running so you
don't have the option of just streaming music from the mysqueezebox.com
server.

2. My sb1 is starting to have problems playing certain internet radio
streams.

overall the sb1 is a fine product but as the technology of online music
streaming changes it seems as though the sb1 is becoming somewhat
obsolete.

I understand the frustration that people have in regards to steve but

I just don't see the point in getting upset at steve. he's quite simply
a brilliant businessman as well as a visionary for the technological
future.

as for your other point, I stand by the notion that people should take
personal responsibility for their actions. so with that said, if someone
is too lazy to make use of this thing called google to find a better and
cheaper way of collecting and customizing their music collection then
they are subject to paying the market value for ease of use.

I guess an obvious analogy would be starbucks. If you want to give away
$2 or more every day to get your coffee fix instead of buying a pound of
coffee for $6 that will last a couple of weeks and provide 50 cups o'
joe then by all means pony up to the starbucks bar. To me, it's all
about free will.

welcome to the world of apple- computers for people who have much higher
standards, expectations and sadly, price points.

seriously though, your life will most definitely improve by working on
a mac. However, the world of squeezebox is heavily skewed towards pc.
and i know of nothing in the mac world that is the equivalent of media
monkey. the best that i can recommend is the sbooth family of programs.

their link: http://sbooth.org/

there you will find tag, play and max. three programs that should cover
all of your music ripping, tagging and metadata changing needs.

good luck and may you never have to open a microsoft program or

my reason for stating that the squeezebox has been skewed towards the pc
is based on music editing programs such as media monkey that are
predominantly pc only in develoment and the number of plugins over the
years that were built only for the windows environment (i.e.-moose).

but I would say too that to operate your server on a platform other
than what you use everyday for your normal computing seems needlessly
inconvenient.

also, are you actually serious pat that you've never even taken itunes

a drawback of moca is that it doesn't currently work with dish network.

wireless N sounds great and probably IS great but it won't be a simple

I recently purchased a Netgear MOCA ethernet adapter kit for my

connection into it and then connect an ethernet cable out to any

than wireless n.

I've always been sold on the notion of wired instead of wireless

Re: [slim] Now what?

2009-08-13 Thread exile

I know this forum has been to mars and back in discussing this issue and
there seems to still be those folks that are absolutists about the idea
of copyright infringement laws.

to me, that argument is way too simple.

we live in a time of rapidly evaporating copyright truths. the internet
revolution right or wrong has created the idea that virtually everything
should be available for free or darn near free. To some of us folks who
put up with $11.99 records before they became a niche market item and
then $18.99 cds when the record companies started to see that their
profits were going up in smoke due to the internet, the revolution has
been a wonderful breath of fresh air in a formally greed oriented
business.

so now the question becomes how do we properly compensate the artists
for making this fantastic music? currently, it looks like the purchasing
of recorded music tracks will become secondary or even tertiary to live
concerts and merchandising.

so my advice for the folks who are hung up on the minutia of copyright
issues is to go see live music-pay a fair price for that ticket and then
buy a t-shirt, poster, or other band related trinket. that's how you can
pay that artist back for getting the music on amazon for cheap or for
free online or through a hard drive swap with a friend or any other
combination of ways that many folks like myself are getting their
digital files.

[slim] refresh of left side web interface-simple or not?

2008-11-11 Thread exile

i'm thinking that this should be simple...I'd like the left side of my
web interface to continuously show (and refresh) the custom browse
display of each song that plays. Currently i can only get this display
after I click on the CB button next to a song on the right side and it
doesn't refresh when a new song plays.

Is this just a setting change?

for those on a budget in these uncertain times...search out a sb2 on
craig's list (i found one for less than $100) and get an itouch (also
readily available on craig's list.) It's the perfect setup.

Re: [slim] Softsqueeze!

2008-11-03 Thread exile

This is just to add perspective. I've been using softsqueeze 3.7 (I
think that's the latest) and using it to listen to my music library
from work. Softsqueeze is inherently problematic and has been for a
long time. Each and every day of use of this player involves multiple
restarts as well as multiple connection drops. I know I could do some
troubleshooting but I really don't have the time or energy since it's a
dead player.

hopefully squeezeplay will be available soon and more stable.

I don't know what needs to be set for you to see track title. After
turning on the custom browse plugin, I now can arrow right into a song

this song in my collection. I don't think I made any special
adjustments to the plugin to make this happen. i believe it should work
in default mode.

[slim] Can this still be done?

2008-10-27 Thread exile

My apologies if this has already been covered here in the forum but I
have no idea how to search out this topic.

There used to be a time when i could show the currently playing song on
my sb2 and then arrow right and see all versions of that song title that
exist in my library. But in the new squeezecenter i can't find how to do
this and I think it's because I can't scroll through a song's info and
see the song title. There's everything else infowise to scroll through
but not the song title.

anyone know if this is still an option? Am I missing something obvious?

I simply think that trying to regulate and restrict the free flow of

But the purchasing of music is just one way of acquiring music these

Re: [slim] I'm tempted to try MusicIP again, but...

2008-10-10 Thread exile

once you get past the scanning process, the fun will finally begin. I've
been running MusicIP for quite some time now on my system and it does
work very well and consistently without crashes. Also, all of the
benefits of dynamic playlists can be utilized within MusicIP. All you
need to do is set up filters in musicip to determine what music gets
mixed into playlists and then you're off and running. Also, the
trackstat ratings transfer perfectly into musicip so you have full
control over what kinds of rated tracks get mixed into playlists.

good luck!

You'll get no argument from anyone on that point ( i think). I'm a tv
editor and so professionally I work with pristine HD imagery every day
but in my home environment I find no need to replicate what I see at
work because I primarily watch programs through my hd cable box and
that as you probably know is highly compressed 720.

I'm all for the improvement of picture quality. I can't begin to tell
you how happy tv professionals are to finally be rid of standard def
imagery. But enjoy the blu ray while it's still around cause I think
it's lifespan will be quite short.

convenience always seems to trump over quality. the beta vs vhs battle
of the 80's is a great example. My cable box (and downloads/streaming
in the future) is/will be more convenient than physical discs. and I
think the same could be said of mp3's vs cd's.

2008-07-28 Thread exile

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: How often do you have hard drive failures of your music
server?

- 1 or more a year
- 2 or more in mutliple years
- Never
- All the time

i don't have an opinion as to which drive you should purchase but I
wanted to add my two cents.

I have a couple of friends who work for a data recovery company. Their
mantra is that all drives fail-some manufacturers have a better rep
than others but all manufacturers sell drives that die. Therefore the
most important thing is to have a proper backup strategy.

my own setup: two 500 gig external la cie firewire 800 drives. I'm on a
mac so I use a program called deja vu to backup my music every night.
deja vu does a good job of keeping the two music directories perfectly
in sync.

I also have an internal mirror drive of my main system hard drive. I
use a program called superduper to backup my main system drive every
night as well. so if my main system died I would just switch over to
the mirror and keep on going. and this actually happened to me about
six months ago when my original main hard drive died. But since I had a
perfect mirror, the transfer from one drive to the other was seamless.

my personal feeling is that a RAID setup is overkill. I work with RAIDS
professionally and they do work well but in a home environment it's not
necessary.

good luck.

funkstar-

I agree if you're dealing with multiple TB's of data then the RAID
scenario is the most logical. But I do think that multiple TB's is the
exception to the norm of most home media servers.

Amen to that. Right now we're in a period in which some folks still
feel a need to possess cds to have perfect lossless versions of their
music. But I would guess in a short time the small barrier of acquiring
lossless downloads will be removed and cds will disappear from the

Same goes for video. itunes, amazon and netflix type video download
services are going to make blue ray obsolete before it's even had a
chance to be a mainstream option.

Re: [slim] Network Test: Wireless vs. Homeplug

2008-07-20 Thread exile

I can't say I've ever done an official test with my netgear powerline
xe102's but I can attest to the fact that I have virtually perfect
connections on my three slimboxes-all of them connected via powerline.
I've had this setup running consistently for about six months.

Re: [slim] Fishbone problem in Firefox 3.0 on OS X

2008-06-17 Thread exile

and another thing... I've been noticing that in the fishbone skin the
right side of the page doesn't fully update in a timely manner at the
start of a new song. The artwork always seems to change but there's
sometimes a delay in displaying the correct artist and album info.
perhaps this has already been addressed in the latest nightlies. I'm
running SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0.1 - 19705 on osx10.4.10.

Re: [slim] Somebody has to say it.

2008-05-22 Thread exile

I know that it's venting for the most part but I think the main point is
quite valid. I too am a loyal customer with three boxes and thousands of
hours of musical enjoyment under my belt due to the revolutionary
squeezeserver.

however, I can't recommend this product to any of my 'normal' friends-
i.e.- friends who don't have a very solid grasp of computers and who
also have a near obession to tweaking server software and/or music
tags. I live in san francisco and several of my friends are IT
professionals and I don't think i would recommend the product to those
folks either. maybe that's mainly due to the fact that most of my
friends have kids and there's just not enough time in the day for such
a trivial activity as tweaking a music server. for myself, I find it
endlessly challenging so I actually enjoy the time spent improving my
squeezecenter. But it's just not a mass market product...yet. I think
in time it will be but that time has not come.

oh, and by the way-the spinning disk icon in the default skin could
possibly be the dumbest improvement ever made with the server software.

i would argue that efforts should be made to streamline the server
software as much as possible. less add ons-not more. sometimes that
pesky squeezecenter is hogging 80-90% of my computer's brain power when
executing certain commands. that to me does not seem like a good thing.
