Re: [slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community
thanks to those that think the thread is helpful. Arniceous, much of what you said originally was misleading and that's the annoying part. Sonos isn't an open source product like LMS but it's also not a closed product like itunes or Apple products. It's not an Apple product and it really doesn't operate as an Apple type product. It's pretty robust in what it offers and it isn't restrictive in my mind at all. For me, I needed a product that consistently works with streaming services. I also wanted to steer away from the endless tweaking and maintenance that my LMS system required. If LMS had easily co-existed with Spotify on my system I wouldn't have switched. I've dealt with digital music servers for long enough to realize that there'll always be some technical issues but at least for now I have a multi-room system that works well and without dropouts and to me that's priceless. exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I also thought it could be helpful for anyone in the squeeze community that has been struggling with Spotify and LMS to think in terms of switching to Sonos. My LMS server was not consistently working with spotify. I now have four rooms of sonos and I have zero streaming problems and to me that's worth the switch alone. The added bonus is that the sonos server operates very similarly to the LMS and so I don't feel as though I've sacrificed much by abandoning squeeze. But go ahead and bash away at sonos and my decision if that's what you want to do. exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Most of the other Sonos products are a hybrid speaker and wireless streaming device and again none of the Sonos products have display screens. You can buy the Sonos speakers as single units or pair them together to make true stereo speakers for a room. Re: [slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community
i know that for many others out there the LMS/Spotify partnership is great so I can only speak to my own experience. my system was two squeezebox3's and two squeezebox2's with a dedicated mac mini server running on a fast (average of 90mbps) wireless network, I ran into recurring problems getting the spotify streams to play on one box and way too many problems having multiple boxes play spotify in sync. For me, the lack of consistency with spotify was the final straw. I would've much rather stayed with Squeezeboxes (the cost alone to go sonos is brutal but more importantly I'm giving up ten years of trackstat ratings and stats.) but I no longer have the patience to troubleshoot squeeze server issues. Over the holiday, I spent a week with my brother-in-law who has a sonos system for 5 rooms and in the course of playing spotify music for seven days we ran into zero problems with syncing or playing any and all tracks and that sealed the deal for me. Also, the fact that there's no real future development of the squeeze product line also helped me make the move. exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community
So after more than a decade of dedicated squeezeboxen life I find myself moving onto a Sonos system. Therefore, I simply want to thank this entire community because it's the folks here on this forum that made my squeezebox audio listening experience so rewarding. The true power of the squeeze server was it's open source structure and community plug in development. I loved using a variety of plugins to customize, organize and generally focus my listening experience. Big thanks to: michael herger, greg brown, richard titmuss and Gordon Harris for their hard work. And the two people that completely transformed how I listened to and used my squeeze system: Pippin and Erland. I move onto Sonos now which I know will not completely replace my squeeze system but hopefully it will advance my music listening experience. The main reason I finally switched is because I no longer need to listen to my own music. Spotify pretty much satisfies all of my listening needs and Sonos just simply works much better with spotify. Thanks for all of the great listening over the years... exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I think most folks could care less if those network shows are attached to a local affiliate. The local stations will need to take into account how people are going to be watching tv product in the near future. At the same time, companies like comcast should also be prepared for the shift. I've yet to meet a person who thinks that the current cable tv structure is a good thing. 500 channels? why? most people watch between 3-5 networks of tv regularly. change is gonna come either way. it would be unfortunate if the tv biz went down the same path as the music biz. -- exile exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82366 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

my reason for stating that the squeezebox has been skewed towards the pc is based on music editing programs such as media monkey that are predominantly pc only in develoment and the number of plugins over the years that were built only for the windows environment (i.e.-moose). but I would say too that to operate your server on a platform other than what you use everyday for your normal computing seems needlessly inconvenient. also, are you actually serious pat that you've never even taken itunes for a test drive? that's quite precious of you if it's true. -- exile exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71904 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Now what?
I know this forum has been to mars and back in discussing this issue and there seems to still be those folks that are absolutists about the idea of copyright infringement laws. to me, that argument is way too simple. we live in a time of rapidly evaporating copyright truths. the internet revolution right or wrong has created the idea that virtually everything should be available for free or darn near free. To some of us folks who put up with $11.99 records before they became a niche market item and then $18.99 cds when the record companies started to see that their profits were going up in smoke due to the internet, the revolution has been a wonderful breath of fresh air in a formally greed oriented business. so now the question becomes how do we properly compensate the artists for making this fantastic music? currently, it looks like the purchasing of recorded music tracks will become secondary or even tertiary to live concerts and merchandising. so my advice for the folks who are hung up on the minutia of copyright issues is to go see live music-pay a fair price for that ticket and then buy a t-shirt, poster, or other band related trinket. that's how you can pay that artist back for getting the music on amazon for cheap or for free online or through a hard drive swap with a friend or any other combination of ways that many folks like myself are getting their digital files. -- exile exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66387 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

here's my experience... I'm on osx10.5.4 and successfully running ss7.1 I've found that with the latest versions of ss I've had best luck with installing the software for all users and putting all plugins in: library-application support-squeezecenter-plugins. I used to put them in my user library but I now ignore that squeezecenter folder all together. I'm all for the improvement of picture quality. I can't begin to tell you how happy tv professionals are to finally be rid of standard def imagery. But enjoy the blu ray while it's still around cause I think it's lifespan will be quite short. convenience always seems to trump over quality. the beta vs vhs battle of the 80's is a great example. My cable box (and downloads/streaming in the future) is/will be more convenient than physical discs. and I think the same could be said of mp3's vs cd's. -- exile exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50035 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I have a couple of friends who work for a data recovery company. Their mantra is that all drives fail-some manufacturers have a better rep than others but all manufacturers sell drives that die. Therefore the most important thing is to have a proper backup strategy. my own setup: two 500 gig external la cie firewire 800 drives. I'm on a mac so I use a program called deja vu to backup my music every night. deja vu does a good job of keeping the two music directories perfectly in sync. I also have an internal mirror drive of my main system hard drive. I use a program called superduper to backup my main system drive every night as well. so if my main system died I would just switch over to the mirror and keep on going. and this actually happened to me about six months ago when my original main hard drive died. But since I had a perfect mirror, the transfer from one drive to the other was seamless. my personal feeling is that a RAID setup is overkill. I work with RAIDS professionally and they do work well but in a home environment it's not necessary. good luck. -- exile exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50299 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Somebody has to say it.
I know that it's venting for the most part but I think the main point is quite valid. I too am a loyal customer with three boxes and thousands of hours of musical enjoyment under my belt due to the revolutionary squeezeserver. however, I can't recommend this product to any of my 'normal' friends- i.e.- friends who don't have a very solid grasp of computers and who also have a near obession to tweaking server software and/or music tags. I live in san francisco and several of my friends are IT professionals and I don't think i would recommend the product to those folks either. maybe that's mainly due to the fact that most of my friends have kids and there's just not enough time in the day for such a trivial activity as tweaking a music server. for myself, I find it endlessly challenging so I actually enjoy the time spent improving my squeezecenter. But it's just not a mass market product...yet. I think in time it will be but that time has not come. oh, and by the way-the spinning disk icon in the default skin could possibly be the dumbest improvement ever made with the server software. i would argue that efforts should be made to streamline the server software as much as possible. less add ons-not more. sometimes that pesky squeezecenter is hogging 80-90% of my computer's brain power when executing certain commands. that to me does not seem like a good thing. -- exile exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47952 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
