Yes, that's correct. When I worked at BBC Bush House in London, there was a toggle switch on every studio console labelled "Ben", so that the operator could insert the chimes as needed. The microphone in the clock tower was live all the time so the op could check the feed, and you could occasionally hear conversations of workmen in the tower. ftlight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5294 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109963 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

When I worked at BBC Bush House (1968-71) we had clean feeds of Radio 1, 2, 3 & 4, plus audio channels for BBC 1 and BBC 2 TV. Enterprising staff in the Central Tape Room would record Top of the Pops, Pick of the Pops, Top Gear, and other music shows every week at 15ips on 10.5" reels and stash them on a special shelf. Then on the night shift you could find a few tape ends, splice them together into a full reel, make a high-speed copy of anything you were interested in, and take it home. As long as it didn't get out of hand, management turned a blind eye - things were a lot more casual at the BBC then. So around June 1970 I made copies of a couple of John Peel shows and spliced up a compilation of tracks I liked, complete with his intros. I still have the tape, about 80 minutes, and digitized it some years ago. Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?
Based on the comments in this thread, which I've been following since the start, I ordered a Chromcast Audio from Best Buy ($30 with free shipping) and hooked it up to my main AV system when it arrived yesterday. Setup was easy (I used the Windows PC based installer), and I was able to listen immediately to Pandora via the Chromecast app on my iPhone 4. I tried both the wired and optical connections to a spare line-in connection on my AV receiver and both worked fine. I had already added the plugin to LMS (Windows 7, LMS 7.9); it didn't recognize the Chromecast immediately, but I checked again after listening to Pandora for a while and it was there. I was then able to play both the BBC and my own local library via the Chromecast, controlling it with iPeng. I actually have a Touch on my main system, so I now have the Chromecast hooked up to a small amplifier and a pair of speakers in the kitchen, which I formerly ran from a Duet Receiver (this was often flaky). Thanks to Philippe and everyone who has contributed to this project! This has been a good year for Squeezebox, what with the successful adaptation to the BBC's endless changes and the integration of quite a few third-party hardware devices. ftlight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5294 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104383 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

To obtain a key to access Nitro it is necessary to register via the Developer Portal. Currently access is limited to BBC teams but we are working on the changes required to open this up to external non-commercial and hobbyist users; this should be available later this year (a project known as Nitro Public). In the meantime you can read more about Nitro and how it works in the documentation section of the portal, as well as the terms of use and Nitro Public Licence. Re: [slim] BBC online radio fiasco - comments, news, moans, campaigns
I see that the BBC blog is taking its usual sad course: 1. Andrew Scott posts a list of justifications and rationalizations for the BBC's conduct without actually addressing any of the questions left over when previous posts were closed for comments. 2. Generally desperate or frustrated (but polite) listeners request answers to old questions, ask some new questions, point out further manufacturers who have heard nothing useful (or at all) from the BBC, etc. 3. Andrew Scott ignores these comments and questions (although it's only a day so far). 4. More questions and comments arrive. 5. Someone gets annoyed and starts campaigning. 6. The BBC moderator closes the thread. ftlight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5294 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103311 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Each frequency apparently had its own engineer making transmission decisions, and the continuity announcer was evidently given cues as to when to stop speaking to permit the fading-out of a programme on one frequency while still talking on another. I was there in the late 1960s, but I suspect nothing much changed for quite a while after that. There was only one stream for World Service and each of the networks, of course, but we had transmitter sites all over the UK and also in remote places like Ascension Island. Once the feeds left us they went to the transmitter sites by landline, submarine cable, or radio relay, and it was then entirely up to the transmitter engineers what to do with them. For the foreign language broadcasts they regularly had to change frequencies and also steer the shortwave antennas to beam the signal in the right direction for the target audience, as each of the six networks had to serve multiple language groups and geographical destinations at different times of the day. I think most of the timing that you mention was done strictly by the clock; the control room had a precision master clock synchonized to GMT, and all over the building there were subsidiary clocks locked to the master. And of course the presenters, many of whom also ran their own control consoles, were pros at this. ftlight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5294 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103311 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
