Does it have the standard SB features, such as gapless, replay-gain,

for the VortexBox to make sure everything is properly supported. Bonus
points if you can use the VortexBox itself as a controller.

It seems that with audio, price increase exponentially for diminishing
returns. As you are happy with your current system, just enjoy it and
forget about this need to always upgrade. Especially if money is tight,
this usually means that there are other essentials where you could use
that money.

Now, this is where I would spend some of that money :
1) A backup solution. You don't want those track to disappear and all
the hard work that went into creating your collection to be reduce to
nothing.
2) A battery for your Radio. Your radio does not want to be tethered, it
wants to go in the garden when you play with the kids and in the garage
when you are repairing stuff what the kids broke.
3) A few CDs you have been lusting after for a long time. It's about the
music.
4) A SB Radio for the kids. They want to listen to music in the bedroom.

Have fun...

Jean

I figure I have a few options, and am wondering what would give me the
biggest boost in sound (on the living room system)
1. I could upgrade to a Squeezebox Touch.
2. I could keep the SB3 and add a cheap DAC, perhaps a used Cambridge
Audio DAC magic
3. I could upgrade my amp (something used in the sub-500 range... not
sure what I'd be looking for.)
I am not throwing parties so don't need things to go too loud... really
I'm looking for optimum detail/soundstage/etc.
Any ideas on where to go next?
Cheers (and sorry for the long post!)

My Touch loose several minutes a week with latest software when running

A workaround is to temporarily connect to mysqueezebox.com to fix the
 clock.

An alternative workaround is to setup NTP on the touch :
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87588highlight=ntp

I did that when I was on TinySB 7.5.4. Since upgrading to 7.7.0, I did
not put NTP, because I did not notice enough drift yet (my drift is not
that bad). I'll try to check if my NTP instructions works with TinySB
7.7.0 this week end, as well as how much drift I see.

I looked at the bug 17164, and I was puzzled that the description of
the bugfix seemed to relate to only a small part of the issue, but I
did not dig deeper. In other words, it make sense to me that the bug is
not fixed in 7.7.0.

The trick is that SBS reads file in a certain order, so you create the

The Touch can not do 192 kHz because of the CPU, the rest of the HW
could do it, to support 192 kHz you probably would need twice the
amount of CPU of the current Touch. 192 kHz is essential for bragging
rights.

From my experience, what is sucking CPU and memory is usually not the
server functions, but the user interface. I've put a web server, PHP
and a database on the first gen Gumstix, which is slower than the
current Touch. On the other hand, if you want smoother VU meters and
frequency analysers, you will want more CPU and memory. Same for smooth
coverflow.

Moore's law always work in your favor. Every 18 months, you get double
the CPU and memory for the same price. What goes today in your cell
phone will trickle to your Touch.

1) Bigger screen. Those tablet/PMP screens are reaching large volume,
making them more affordable. 7in should be the new sweet spot.
2) 192 kHz support. It's bigger, it must be better. The only way to put
it on the cover of Stereophile and TAS.
3) USB DAC support, two USB ports. Same as above.
4) Offer web server interface when running TinySB. Access it with any
browser, any device, no app required (unless you care about
usability).
5) Facebook integration (I would prefer Skype integration, but that
would be too difficult)
I believe all those are not difficult and would improve the appeal. But
I also believe the Touch2 would not come soon, the Touch is not that
old.

Re: [slim] Time for a speculation thread...

2011-02-28 Thread jean2

A mix of logical extrapolations and wishes.

Boom2 : Basically a Radio with two speakers. Same screen as Radio if
they want to keep cost down, or maybe the Touch touch screen if they
want market differentiation (most likely not). Make sure audio quality
is there to differentiate from the Radio.

Classic2 : Basically a Radio without the speaker nor the battery but
with both RCA and digital output, in a small package. It still has the
buttons and the screen of the Radio so can be used and configured
standalone (no controller needed - addresses shortcomings of Receiver).
It maxes at 44.1/24 and has a normal quality DAC, to differentiate it
from the Touch. With the removal/addition, and because it uses the same
volume parts as the Radio, its price should be similar to the price of
the Radio, and consequently similar to the price of the Receiver. It
replaces both the Receiver and the Classic, and extend in the low end
of the market and compete with upcoming products in that space.

Touch2 : twice the CPU, twice the memory, twice the audio spec (192
MHz), twice the screen size, twice the USB connectors (for USB audio
out). TinySB with web-interface and plug-ins. Move further upmarket.

Controller2 : get an unbranded OEM phone from HTC, put Logitech custom
firmware on it. That would be probably the most efficient way to move
forward with the controller, as dedicated hardware will end up either
too expensive or underpowered, and also not as power efficient (volume
is key). The loss of the scroll wheel and buttons is the big challenge
UI wise, but the Touch shows they may be able to pull it.

Transporter2 : License SqueezePlay platform and protocol to one or two
established super-high-end audio vendor competing with Linn and Olive.
Brand name and funny marketing is the ticket at the high end, and
Logitech won't do it.

And of course, we should hope for something more revolutionary, but I'm
too realistic for that...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/172681/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_e_3_3_last

Those rankings have been fairly consistents over the last months. The
most amazing to me is the portable radio and boombox category, where
the Radio is competing effectively against $30 radios !

Second, if Logitech was not making money, and its products were not
successful, the competition would not try to emulate them :

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/30/grace-digital-adds-color-displays-on-new-solo-touch-bravado-x/

Facts are : First, according to one of the largest US retailer,
Logitech products are selling well. Not as much as iPod, obviously, but
I don't think it's possible. Second, the SqueezeBox line is seen as
sufficiently successful and generating enough profit that competitors
are jumping in, not the sign of a dying market.

It's true that Logitech could decide to stop here, but the signs are
that Logitech is successful with the SqueezeBox line and will continue
to try to serve that market and sell more boxes. And, because of
competition raising the bar, this will mean new products.

Now, the communication and actions of the company may not be that
clear, but all big companies are like that. Logitech may make blunder
short term, but long term they can not ignore what the market is
telling them.

together, I'm not sure of the advantages of WDS to me in this setting,
since I understand that for wifi devices WDS effectively halves the
 bandwidth.

I don't see any point in using WDS if you already went through the
trouble of laying out an Ethernet cable. WDS is more complicated, more
brittle and lower performance, and you may potentially run into
compatibility issues.

aubuti;577716 Wrote:
Option 2 is basically to replicate the setup I have now, using the
second router as a simple access point. In fact, for this option I
could buy an AP, except they usually cost more and are useless as
backup routers in case my router suddenly dies.

If you find something compatible with OpenWRT/DD-WRT/Tomato, any router
can be configured as an Access Point trivially. The difference between
an router and an access point is only in the software running on top of
it.

I have not tried that, but if you configure your two router with the
same ESSID on different channel, your clients should be able to roam
between the two. It used to work with 802.11b and WEP, but WPA may get
in the way.

aubuti;577716 Wrote:

out there (WRT160NL) that supports DD-WRT, so Option 1 would still be a
 possibility.

 Any advice? Thanks.

If I were to buy a device, I would pick one of the two options. I'm not
overall impressed by the quality of the hardware out there, no point in
paying 802.11n money to get 802.11g performance and range.

First option is another WRT54GL, because it's cheap and very well
supported by all the alternate firmware, and I could swap it trivially
with all my other WRT54GL.

Second option is a NETGEAR WNDR3700, because it's one of the few
802.11n routers to get very good review, because it support 5GHz, has
good range, and because it's supported by OpenWRT.

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/30925-start-your-buying-netgear-wndr3700-reviewed
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/netgear/wndr3700

At then end, it really depend on *your* usage patterns. If your usage
is mostly toward the Internet, your broadband provider (DSL, Cable...)
is likely the bottleneck so no point in getting beyond 802.11g. If you
have lot's or internal traffic (file sharing, backup...), then install
CAT6 Ethernet cable or get the best 802.11n router you can get.

Personally, I'm a cheap guy and I salvaged another WRT54GS in the
trash. But I promised myself to install CAT6 one day.

Have fun...

[slim] Powered bookshelf speaker for bookshelf ?

2009-10-29 Thread jean2

Hi,

I'm looking forward to buy a SqueezeBox. I don't want to keep my
old hi-fi around, as I want to keep things simple, and it's not that
special anyway. So I'm looking in into powered bookshelf speakers.
The gotcha is that my current speaker are in a bookshelf cabinet,
with books on the side and top, and this is the obvious place to put the
new speakers. With kids running around, I can't really consider other
options.

I searched the forum, and it seems that one of the favorite is the
AudioEngine 5. It's in the price range I was considering. The dimension
are also similar to my old speakers.
What worries me is that the bass-reflex is at the back (my current
speaker has it in front). My feeling is that I would be loosing all the
bass extension of the bass-reflex, and that may also impact the response
of the bass woofer.

First question : are my worry about the AudioEngine 5 bass-reflex
overblown ? Has anybody tested the AudioEngine 5 against a wall or in a
shelf ?
Second question : is there alternative speakers in the USA, similar
in price/size/feature as the AudioEngine 5 but more compatible with
bookshelf use ?

Thanks in advance...
