Thanks autopilot and bobkoure for advice. Have now tried Softsqueeze,

been using Squeezecenter. In case it was a problem with Squeezecenter I
have downloaded the latest version, but can't get it to run. When I
check in My Computer it shows the original version I downloaded in
January. I suppose I should have waited until SC7 fully released.
Should I delete old SC7 before installing new SC7 ?
 Mike

Assuming you have Java installed on your computer, you can run
softsqueeze as an applet. Try this from your SlimServer web-gui; it
will run the applet from the webserver.

Re: [slim] Best way to make systems more available to the average Joe?

2008-02-18 Thread jst1

I've found the Buffalo LinkStation to be an ideal platform for a
SlimServer + Samba file server for a home / small office. It is a
technically complicated process to install this software (firmware
flash upgrade, Debian installation, compiling software,
configuration...But it requires no fiddling once installed and
operational. This platform is significantly more economical than the
other alternatives, both in purchase cost and ongoing operations (due
to extremely low power consumption). PM me if interested in learning
more or sharing ideas on this.

What do you mean by commercial posting?

I want to market a preconfigured slimserver device, and it seems this
forum is a good audience! However, I am unsure if it is appropriate to
use this forum. I do not believe it is possible to buy advertising
space here either...

[slim] Commercial Posting?

2008-02-14 Thread jst1

Is there an appropriate venue here in these forums for commercial
postings for SlimServer hardware? There are a lot of threads on the
topic of how to either build or buy the ideal platform, but the answers
here generally take the 'DIY (do it yourself)' attitude. I'm interested
in comments without starting a 'flame war'!

You can always try it. OTOH you wrote

I have given open permissions on the 'iTunes' directory,

You not only need setting it on that folder, but on the parent folders
 as
well, starting with /home/username. Otherwise SlimServer can't even
 reach
the folder it'd be allowed to acces.

 Michael

So that means that I need to have the SlimServer user have access to
the entire /home? Any best practice suggestions?

If you have an external drive you can shift your itunes library to that.

The library is at /srv/music on my linux box (same box as slimserver).
My issue is only with the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file. As far as I
can see, this file needs to be in My Documents/My Music/iTunes. If I
could change the location of the file or somehow use symbolic links for
this file, I do not think I would be having such problems.

[slim] SlimServer on Linux and iTunes problems

2007-06-07 Thread jst1

SlimServer running on Linux box which is also a SAMBA file server.
iTunes runs on a Windows PC with the My Documents residing on the SAMBA
file server:

My Documents is actually '//sambaservername/username'

Locally on the Linux box is is '/home/username'

The iTunes directory is '/home/username/My Music/iTunes'

I have given open permissions on the 'iTunes' directory, and I have
tried configuring SlimServer for
ITUNES MUSIC LIBRARY.XML LOCATION to '/home/username/My
Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml', but I get 'Oops -
'/home/username/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml' doesn't seem
to be a valid file. Try again.'

Is there a simple solution?

What if you prepend the space with a backslash?

 Michael

I tried variants of the following without success:
/home/username/My\ Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music\ Library.xml

Is it required to bounce slimserver after enabling the iTunes
integration maybe? I have not restarted in in over a month.

[slim] iTunes on Windows SlimServer on Linux

2007-01-31 Thread jst1

SlimServer on Linux box; iTunes on Windows with iTunes folder (via
samba) the same directory as SlimServer Music Folder (/srv/music).

The iTunes iTunes Music Library.xml file is on my Windows box
'C:\Documents and Settings\my_username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes'.
Can I change the location of this file so that my slimserver on linux
can read it? Can the xml file be located anywhere else?

I rip CDs and organize tags with iTunes, and use SlimServer to stream
to a SqueezeBox and remote players over an ssh tunnel.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
