I've had good success using Connectbot/Squeezebox server. First setup the port forwards, then I use AOnline Radio App... to setup a "radio station" to stream from localhost:9000/stream.mp3. The squeezebox server streams perfectly. I control my remote squeezebox using SqueezeControl app... again setting up 9090(CLI) and (9000) in the port forwards. You can browse the library and play any song remotely. The only hitch is that Aonline does a good amount of local buffering (a good thing)... so there will be a lag when you change playlists until the buffer catches up. Over 3G...be aware that when you receive a call on CDMA/Verizon..you lose data connection..a bummer..so the tunnel closes. This issue is gone over Wifi, of course -- where I tend to use it more. But I have used it for a long trip in the carbefore I got a call to drop the tunnel (I am looking forward to LTE for this reason). Re: [slim] How to stream music to your android phone.
I discovered the exact combination below after much trial and errorI wish I would have searched for this solution first as I would have been enjoying it longer :) Although I do something extra that may help some others. My Internet connection is Firewalled, and the only way in is via ssh. I use ConnectBot(free on Market) to setup port forwarding on both CLI and Web ports on my Droid2.Then A Online Radio and SqueezeControl are both simply pointed to localhost on the phone (127.0.0.1). These IPs never have to change, and DynDNS takes care of ssh resolution to my dynamic host IP at home. It all works well both over EvDO and WiFi, but of course requires the added step of securing the tunnel first with my password. This takes about 10 seconds. The only drawback is that if I get a phone call -- and am connecting via EvDO, the network connection is dropped, ssh session is closed and everything has to be restarted. That is until this issue of simultaneous WLAN/phone use is fixed (if it ever is on this phone). But I will not expose my server to the Internet directly, so this is a good compromise. Hope this helps some other folks with ssh/firewalls. Wifi tends to be quite variable -- sometimes strong, with good throughput, sometimes not so strong. The maximum numbers for n/g/a are highly idealized and rarely even closely obtained. For instance... a microwave oven goes on in the house, the APs negotiate a much lower transmission speed during this time. Saving 30%-50% of the bandwidth necessary to move a file around can mean buffers don't deplete during these typical drop-offs etc. Granted it doesn't take much to stream CD WAV files around uncompressed, and if that is all you are doing it is likely either hit or miss. But once you put a couple PCs in the house on the same wireless network, a NMT streaming DTS SD Video those bits of bandwidth become even more scarce.Keep in mind all these wireless technologies are simplex as well. Even a relatively good signal negotiated at 20mbps compared to the state of the art network gear from 12 or more years ago (100mb Switched full duplex) giving full duplex 200mb bandwidth per station, the difference can be huge. -- jt25741 SB3->AR Masters Coax -> PS Audio DLIII (Cullen L3) -> Cardas Golden Reference XLR -> Sim Audio P-5 -> Cardas Golden Reference XLR -> Sim Audio W-5 -> Cardas Golden Reference Hi-Mid,PS Audio Xstream Plus Low-> Magnepan 3.6R ---- jt25741's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57371 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] SB3 24/48 FLAC Spontaneous Trouble
Hi all, I have a rather bazaar scenario with my SB setup. I have for some time been enjoying about 10 or so 24bit/48Khz FLAC encoded albums(decoded on the SB) without issue. These are stored with FLAC 5 Compression(default). The SB has not ever stuttered or had trouble with these same exact files files -- with still relatively responsive scrolling and control with the remote as well. All of a sudden, to my amazement, these same exact files are causing the SB3 trouble now. What is happening is, stuttering and often temporary unresponsiveness to the remote. Looking at the server, I see my CPU utilization is <5%, as usual. Playing any of hundreds of 16/44.1 files still presents no issue with stuttering of responsiveness. All of a sudden, it seems that decoding the FLAC files is taking just too much SB3 CPU -- but the firmware has not changed. Also, no screensaver is on(screen is set up shut off after 15 sec of inactivity). Keeping display on/off doesn't seem to help either way. SB is wirelessly connected with 90+% signal strength (I never have issues here since Wireless AP is 15 ft away). I have tried unplugging and plugging in the SB3, plus restarting the slimserver -- both having no remedy to the problem. Again, SB Firmware has not changed and is still at 6.5.0. Any ideas in what his happening and how I can all of a sudden be having trouble just with the 24/48 FLAC files on the SB that used to work flawlessly? I just keep > the original files off-line, waiting for SD to fix the firmware (or for > transporter, if this day will ever come:) ). > BTW, what do you use for downsampling? Hi Ymilner, have you tried different downsampling tools? From what I read going from 96K->48K is not rocket science and any reasonable downsampler will work well. I have used PPHS and SRC codecs in Foobar with success. For whatever reason, SRC seems to sound better to me...dont know why. Maybe due to its superior low-past filter to filter above the new Nyquist frequency(which gets reduced by 1/2 with the downsampling) Now going from 96 to 44.1 is not an even multiple, so rocket science is involved -- and I dont think any public domain(free) resamplers do a good job. r8brain is an example of one that costs over $70, but does a great job. You can seach on that if interested. There have been posts on this subject that have been very informative. The good news is that the SB does 24/48 native, so getting very high quality from 24/96 material is possible by downsampling and easy. I think pre-processing the file is better than letting the SB do it in firmware because the low-power SB implementation doesn't filter out the introduced artifacts by the bit reduction(no low-pass filtering). I think most of the perceived improvements seem to be obtained from 16/44.1 to 24/48 anyways(HUGE improvement)to 24/96 possibly is a bit overkill...open to debate I guess -- I have not done extensive listening tests, but some here. -- jt25741 SB3->AR Masters Coax -> PS Audio DLIII -> Cardas Golden Reference XLR -> Sim Audio P5 -> Cardas Golden Reference XLR -> Sim Audio W5 -> PS Audio Xtreme Plus(Low) AQCV4(mid/hi)-> Magnepan 3.6R ---- jt25741's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34451 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Now if I can only get this thing working with my excellent sounding DAC -- that would be great. I really love this thing -- so much so that I still am listening to it through old-fashioned CD players with the cool Squeezebox staring at me;) -- jt25741 jt25741's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I understand what you are saying. Everything is P-P wired by hand, except for some surface mount stuff under the board. The reciever is in the upper left of the PCB as you suspected and it is hard wired to the jacks. Those wires you see in the picture are indeed the hot/cold of the SPDIF interface. Yes they are naked(as they appear) -- do you think this is the issue here? If so, perhaps I can rewire them and that will fix this issue? -- jt25741 -------- jt25741's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Try a video cable, which will have the correct 75 ohm > impedance. Hi Sean: The cable is a very high-quality 75Ohm variety. I also tried a much cheaper 75Ohm SPDIF Cable I got from Monoprice. Again it works with the A/V receiver but not with the DAC(which continues to work fine with DVD and/or CD players through both cables). Any thing I can try? I tried to disable the volume feature setting in the player settings menu, but it appears not to work(Volume still does work after slecting disable). As for the "audio startup time", this menu option does not exist, at least in the settings sub-menus. Is there a special menu hidden somewhere that I need to find first? Thanks very much. [slim] External DAC Issues with SB3 via SPDIF
Hello, I just received a SB3 with intentions on using this with my external DAC's SPDIF Coax inputs. It is a higher end unit with no TOSLINK. Unit has no problems locking on to any CD player or DVD Player I have over the years, at 16/44.1, 24/96 etc... With the SB3, I get no sync and no signal. Again, connecting DAC immediately using the same cable to my CD players coax output immediately works again through the DAC. I have never had sync issues before with it. Here is the interesting part. If I connect the SB3 to my el-cheapo Pioneer A/V receiver via the same SPDIF it works just fine. However, the sound is horrible by comparison to my high-end DAC and unacceptable to me. Question: Do I need to return the Squeezebox 3 and forget the whole thing, or is there anything that can be done? I really love the SB3, and have all my music streaming in FLAC just ready to sound good. Thanks for any help on this matter, I hope I can fix the problem.
