Re: [slim] Cheap(ish) UK Squeezebox Classic at PC world

2010-03-17 Thread kitecarl

Richer Sounds (another UK store) is showing Squeezebox Receivers for
sale for £79.99, a fantastic price. If you don't have the controller to
configure it, there is a 3rd-party developed program that allows you to
configure it from your PC. Once configured, it'll function the same as
an SB3. I'm definitely considering grabbing one or two.

Re: [slim] SB 3 dead

2010-01-13 Thread kitecarl

Could anyone post some suggestions on the best way to remove the old
card? The wireless NIC is jammed in pretty tight between the mainboard
and the top of the SB3. I'd like to make sure I perform the surgery
correctly as to not break anything during the process. Quite new to
this whole repair thing.. Thanks

I found about 5 stores that had them stocked for GBP 179.99 last week.
Wishing now I would have picked one up then.

[slim] Squeezebox 3 innards question

2009-10-11 Thread kitecarl

Hi everyone,

I sadly have 2 SB3s that both seem to be fried. One was moved over
from the US to the UK and hasn't worked since arriving (potential damage
while shipping is my guess) and the other got knocked off a table top
quite hard the other night by my 2-year-old. Both have an issue where,
you plug in the power cord, and nothing happens. The only lights
visible on the device is the dim infrared light in the back. Sean
himself posted in a previous forum question (right after I moved to the
UK) to take the case off to see if any connections look visibly damaged.
No such luck - from my untrained eye everything looks fine.

So that's my situation. Neither of the devices owe me anything
(they're both around 4 years old) but if anyone has suggestions on what
I could do to try to resurrect them, I'd be grateful. Muchos gracias.

Yep - been there, done that. I bought a 3rd-party 240v cord that works
fine with my one remaining SB3 (and did work fine with the newly
broken-by-a-2-yr-old one).

Re: [slim] Kentucky Fried Squeezebox?

2009-03-05 Thread kitecarl

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have put a bit more detail in my
original post. I did later on by the proper 5V power cords for my other
two SBs, and they're both working great. The SB that I fried, however,
does not work with these cords, which is why I think it's fried. I
plug it it in, and a red light comes on in the back (SP/DIF connection
I think) but the display doesn't turn on in the front.

I assume the next step is to ship it back to SD. Is there a flat
fix-it rate, or should I just save up and buy a new device? Thanks
again..

Re: [slim] Kentucky Fried Squeezebox?

2009-03-05 Thread kitecarl

Perfect - I wonder if a wire might have been bumped in the shipping
across the Atlantic. I will most certainly check things out to see if
something looks off.

The Squeezebox is by far the best consumer electronics product I have
EVER bought - nothing else delivers so many great features and adds
features as years go by. The same Christmas my wife and I splurged for
3 SBs, we also got a Roomba robot vacuum... My wife and I had debates at
the time on which gadget we enjoyed more. Well, the Roomba is stowed
away in the cupboard, having had to be shipped back to iRobot THREE
times, while the SBs are still going strong!

[slim] Kentucky Fried Squeezebox?

2009-03-04 Thread kitecarl

Hi everyone,

Have a sad case to tell... I recently moved from the US to the UK, and
I was so glad to finally have my beloved Squeezebox back in my hands, I
plugged it into the UK power line with what I thought was a working
power adaptor/transformer, but all was not good. I've come to the
conclusion that the transformer part of the adaptor no longer works, so
I think I've fried my unit. Any easy way I can figure this out? Not
sure if Logitech could even fix what broke, and I'm afraid what the
costs would be. Fortunately I have two other SBs so I'm not without my
prcious.

Thanks everyone, part of this is just to have you all commiserate on my
sorrows.

-Carl

Re: [slim] UK Power Supply

2008-08-20 Thread kitecarl

Hi,

I just moved to the UK from the US and have three existing SB3s, of
course all set up for the US. Is the SB3 capable of using the UK
voltage system with just a simple UK to US plug style adapter, or do I
need to get a step-down converter? Even better, is it possible to
order UK power supplies that I could use as a replacement? Thanks!

[slim] Re: Is 6.5 ready for non techies?

2006-09-25 Thread kitecarl

Hi everyone,

I installed 6.5 w/o uninstalling 6.3 this past Friday and everything
has continued working great... I did notice however many people
commenting on the gallery view which I do not see as an option in the
Fishbone UI. Perhaps this is why!

I'll completely wipe out my SlimServer installation tonight and install
6.5 fresh tonight. Afterwards will I see the gallery view as the same
level as Albums, Artists, Years, etc? Thanks.

Is the TS-101 with Slimserver only available for shipping in the UK, or
is there a place where we can get a hold of one in the US? I'm
definitely interested, as well as two other prospective Squeezebox

[slim] Qnap TS-101

2006-01-19 Thread kitecarl

If anyone out there has a Qnap TS-101 (or has one on the way since it
seems they're on backorder!), do you know if Slimserver plugins like
AlienBBC can be installed on them? I've been researching all the
different options for NAS devices that can run SlimServer, and I'm most
interested in the TS-101 since the vendor supports it directly rather
than having to hack a solution a.k.a. the Linkstation support. Perhaps
I'm a Linux wuss, but I like the idea of something being supported
natively. Thanks!

Thanks for the response Paul - my main interest in the LinkStation over
another PC is that I'd like to save on energy and also have a quiet
device since my office is located right next to my living room (where I
can now here my PC fan buzzing while I'm trying to enjoy the music and
it's driving me nuts!)

Based on what I have read on the forum, I think I'm going to save up a
few more clams and invest in a higher-end NAS such as the ReadyNAS or
potentially the QNAP 410.

[slim] Another Linkstation question

2006-01-10 Thread kitecarl

Hello everyone,

I'm a newbie Squeezebox fan - fantastic device. Couldn't be more
impressed with the quality, sound, and beauty of the hardware. Now I'm
just trying to get elegant Slimserver-running hardware to accompany it.

In an effort to both save energy and quiet down my listening experience
by not having my PC on all the time, I'm interested in purchasing a
Buffalo Linkstation to both store my music (approx 400 CDs) and run
Slimserver. I've read that the PPC processor-based Linkstation should
be able to handle AlienBBC - which is a requirement from my British
expat wife - can I get a confirm on that?

Am I kidding myself into thinking the Linkstation will be fast enough
to browse my library which is mainly Apple lossless songs and also run
AlienBBC to potentially two synched SB2s? Any thoughts or comments
are appreciated.

[slim] Re: Maxtor External Network Drive

2005-12-30 Thread kitecarl

Hi everyone, I have two Squeezeboxes on the way next week, and I'm
pumped ... I'm also looking into external HD options. An interesting
product I saw in Gizmodo earlier this week is called the GLAN Tank -
soon to be available in Asia.

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/pcs/glan-tank-media-server-145446.php

It comes with Debian Linux along with built-in support for iTunes
streaming, so I imagine it'll work with the Linux version of
Slimserver.

On another note, does a NAS device take any strain off the Slimserver
computer, or is there no difference at all? Trying to decide if I
should purchase an internal HD for less money or is an external HD
worth it since there are fewer hops on the network? Thanks!
