I've recently been using the Spotify iPhone app and a very nice feature is the 'offline' mode which allows you to download your playlists/albums for playback without an internet connection. [slim] Ipeng as a library sync agent
Hi if you own the excellent iPeng iPhone app then then you are already playing/controlling a library of music with a device that is capable of playing selected albums/playlists from that library as glorified iPod. Wireless (WiFi) syncing of iTunes tracks to the iPhone is (as yet) an unsupported feature so I'd be interested to know how feasible it would be to have this feature as part of the iPeng UI. ie. you select and album or playlist in your library using iPeng and one of the options is to sync (send to) iPhone as an iPod album/playlist. I'm thinking this would probably only be feasible if your library consisted of mp3's - otherwise they would need to be transcoded from flac or whatever on the fly and that probably isn't possible. Just curious. [slim] Devolo 200AV Homeplug digital noise interference
I have 5 squeezebox 3's around the house all connected to a MediaSmart home server via Devolo 200 AV homeplugs. I've never noticed any problems with this setup until I happened to plug a pair of headphones into one of the boxes this morning. I noticed that whenever the activity light on the Devolo flashes (to indicate network activity( it causes a digital noise click through the headphones even when the SB is switched off and playing nothing. Things really start to hot up when the SB is switched on though. Any scrolling activity causes digital noise and when a track is eventually played, the digital interference sounds almost like a fax machine through a telephone receiver (albeit much fainter). This is definitely a problem caused by the Devolo homeplugs as I've tried plugging the ethernet cable directly into the PC and it is compleletly noise free. Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to eradicate it? cheers for any help. [slim] Loud static burst, song position skipping and random stopping
Hi, I've had four SB3's around the house for a couple of years now. Since moving up to 7.x I've started expriencing odd behaviour. Around 6 months ago two of the boxes started to stop tracks dead for no apparent reason - completely randomly also. A couple of weeks ago some tracks started to jump song position, skipping to around a minute or two further on into the track - again completely randomly. This morning I noticed that one of these skips was accompanied by a loud burst of static (sort of white noise). I've never heard this behaviour on the two downstair boxes but only on the upstair boxes. All the boxes have exactly the same firmware version. Four x SB3 wired using Homeplug powered ethernet. 7.2 Slimserver (nightly downloaded yesterday and reinstalled). Windows XP dedicated PC for server. All tracks FLAC compressed using DBPoweramp. -- luga00 luga00's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1938 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52766 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Album Artist Browsing - PLEASE
OK, I've been round the houses with this and I've finally hit upon a way to get exactly what I wanted. I now get all my artists listed as Album Artist with no various artist folder at all. Just one point - I'm using MP3Tag to tag my FLAC files so I can't vouch for any other method of tagging or other file formats. Firstly, I realised that having the COMPILATION tag was generally messing everything up for me (even if it was set to 0), so I stripped it out of all my tracks. I then realised that the band/orchestra tick box was not working at all so after a bit of digging in these forums I found that although I was using both ALBUM ARTIST and ALBUMARTIST tags, the key tag in MP3Tag is the BAND tag. I copied the ALBUMARTIST tag value to the BAND tag value for all my tracks, rescanned and voila it shows all my album artists (ahem Bands) in the artist list with no track artists at all. So to recap. 1)Don't use the COMPILATION tag 2)Make sure the there is a BAND tag in all your tracks showing what would normally be the ALBUMARTIST 3)Make sure the Band/Orchestra tick box is ticked. 4)Clear and rescan. Hope this info works for someone else. Re: [slim] Album Artist Browsing - PLEASE
Well I have to say that I'm finding this all extremely frustrating to say the least. After playing around with this for almost 3 hours trying all sorts of combinations of tags, behaviour settings, and rescanning my library about 10 times, I'm almost ready to throw in the towel. Each of my tracks (FLAC) is now setup thus: (using an example) ALBUM = Classic Steven Stills (for all tracks on the album) ALBUMTITLE = Classic Steven Stills (for all tracks on the album) ALBUM ARTIST = Steven Stills (for all tracks on the album) ALBUMARTIST = Steven Stills (for all tracks on the album) ARTIST = Steven Stills, Jimi Hendrix (for this track only) COMPILATION = 0 Under COMPILATIONS in the Behaviour settings I have: Group compilation albums together List albums by band I've also tried the band/orchestra box both ticked and unticked. AND STILL Jimi Hendrix persists in being listed in the Artist browser. I cannot see what I'm doing wrong here at all. It would be great if Slim could provide an Album Artist category in the browser. Sure, here's an example. I've opened the gallery view and chosen an album for which there is only placeholder artwork. I think at this point Slimserver tries to open the first track to retrieve the embedded artwork and fails. [slim] Duplicated track entries when using playlists - POSSIBLE SOLUTION
I've had the same problem that a lot of people on these boards seem to have had with M3U playlists causing double entries in the album track listings. I've tried moving the playlist to a different directory and telling SS about it but this and other things I've tried did not work. I did notice however that playlists created from within the SS web interface did not cause this problem and it was only when creating playlists with WMP10 that the duplicate entries occured. The problem seems to be that WMP10 M3U entries use an explicit ip address to the server whereas the web interface entries use a local drive letter. eg. This is from a WMP10 created playlist and causes a duplicate: #EXTINF:0,17 God Only Knows.wma \\192.168.1.3\Music Library\Beach Boys\The Very Best of the Beach Boys\17 God Only Knows.wma This is the same entry from an M3U created by SS web interface that doesn't create any duplicate entries.: #EXTINF:0,17 God Only Knows.wma D:\Beach Boys\The Very Best of the Beach Boys\17 God Only Knows.wma I apologise if this already a known issue but it could help some people in the interim. [slim] Edirol MA-15D warning
...well, not so much a warning as something to look out for if you are hyper-crytical (which I'm not). I recently purchased a pair of these powered monitors and as they have a spdif input they are ideal to use with the SB3. Actually, they are excellent speakers and I highly recommend them. However, they feature a bass-enhancment option which you can switch in or out on the rear of one of the speakers. Although you get complete silence when nothing is playing (hurray), I was convinced that I was hearing some sort of white noise over the top of tracks that were actually playing and, in fact, if you stop a track that is playing, for about 500ms or so you can hear this white noise in isolation after the track has stopped. At first I thought this was an SB3 problem as it happened with all the outputs, but after a bit of experimenting I've found that the culprit is the bass enhancement feature. If you switch it off the problem goes away. As this bass feature is psycho-acoustic it is adding some degree of unpleasant side-effect to the music. I must admit that the bass effect is quite good in itself and you have to be really listening hard to hear the white noise but it is there and I thought I'd just post my findings in case any of you were experiencing the same thing. [slim] Re: Edirol MA-15D warning
They are great speakers for the price, especially considering that they are active and accept both optical and coax. If you switch the bass enhance off and they are as clean as a whistle but lacking in bass (obviously). I can actually live with the bass enhancement switched on as the bass it adds is actually very nice and the noise it introduces is virtually imperceptible at the levels you would normally listen at. I'm using them in both the kids bedrooms, quite small rooms. The lead they ship between speakers is around 1.5 to 2m long but is not the best quality lead. It's only a phono to phono though so you can replace this no problem. Anyway, I thouroughly recommend them. -- luga00 luga00's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1938 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19314 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Browse Artwork issues
I had a lot of artwork display problems and have now got it to work how I want it to. However, it was a laborious process and I had to do a lot of diggin around to solve the problem. Basically, when Windows media player rips a CD it creates it's own Folder.jpg and some other artwork thumbnails that put a real spanner in the works. It hides these as system files so they don't show up in explorer. To get round this problem you have to open an explorer window, in the top menu go to Tools-Folder_Options and in the panel that opens click on the 'View' tab. Now check the 'Show hidden files and folders' button. You can now see all the offending automatic artwork (folder.jpg, windows small thumbnails etc) I delete all the thumbnail jpgs and folder.jpg that windows creates as I don't need them. I then rename all my artwork to cover.jpg for each album. Then before a rescan I delete the IE tempory internet files folder which caches a lot of the artwork and uses it next time you scan (or at least it seems to). Give this a go, I'm not sure if this will solve your problem but it helped me get what I wanted. After further investigation this happens with a lot of my music. The amount cut off at the end seems to variable - anywhere between 0 - 2 seconds or so. As a new SB3 owner, I'm less than enamoured with the current method of browsing through swathes of contributing artists for all the reasons I've seen a hundred times on this forum. I understand that the guys at Slim haven't had the time or the inclination to address this as it's probably well down on their list of priorities. The 'ideal' for me would be for SS to 'not' show any contributing artists in the browse list but AlbumArtist only. But to include the contributing artists in any 'artist search' that I might do. My question is 'Can this be done with a plug-in of some kind?' I work for a large computer games company and obviously know a great many talented coders. I would get one of them to write a plug-in to do this and make it available to others wanting this feature but only if I know that it is feasible in the first place. regards Russ Shaw -- luga00 luga00's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1938 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18833 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Speed concerns
Hi, I am considering purchasing a number of Squeezeboxes for around the home and as an experiment to see how well it works I've ripped the entire collection to WMA lossless, downloaded Slimserver 6.2 and a copy of Softsqueeze. I'm running the SS on a 2.2ghz P4 with 1GB RAM. When I play any track from my library from our second machine (which is more powerful than the server machine) using WMP10, playback is very near instantaneous as is any track browsing by album, artist, genre etc. However, when I now try to use the Slimserver coupled with Softsqueeze 2.0 and the web interface (again from the second machine) , its a differnent kettle of fish entirely. When I click on a track or album to play it, Softsqueeze takes around 25 seconds before it actually starts playing. The same delay also occurs when I skip to the next track in the playlist and when I do any sort of search using the Softsqueeze software remote. My question is, does this sound like I have a problem or is this behaviour just something that one should expect from using Softsqueeze? Will I see a vast improvement (the same sort of instantaneous playback I get with WMP10) once I swap Softsqueeze for a Squeezebox? regards Luga -- luga00 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
