Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squidget - A SqueezeBox Widget for Android

2011-05-20 Thread strindberg

Two issues:

1. When Squidget is displaying the Player sleeping, touch sleeper to
wake him up (from memory, I guess it's not the exact wording), I alway
have big troubles waking it up. The widget is completely unresponsive,
although I touch all the controls. The only way to make it active again
is to touch the settings button, and even then it can often take several
seconds before there's any reaction. Pressing Test on the settings
dialog and then save, thereby confirming my old settings, gets the
widget back to active. If it takes time to come back from sleep, it
would be good if it displayed some sort of Waking up, please wait
notification as soon as it is touched.

2. There is a slight usability issue with the search dialog, in my
opinion. There's somethng wrong with using the input field for the
search term, and then filling it with the result of pressing one of the
search results. I don't know exactly how to fix this, but perhaps the
search field could indicate that it is no long editable after one has
selected an item from the proposal list, and then there could be a
button for new search or something similar?

[slim] Android Squeezeplayer over SSH?

2011-05-12 Thread strindberg

Has anyone tried running Squeezeplayer on an Android over an SSH tunnel
(over 3G)? I would love to be able to connect remotely to my server,
but I am reluctant to do so without proper security configured.

Has anyone tried this with SSH or VPN? Would it work?

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squidget - A SqueezeBox Widget for Android

2011-05-11 Thread strindberg

I see some weirdness with regard to the player list. Sporadically, when
I press the player icon, Squidget reports No items to display instead
of the player list. If I immediately press the player button again, it
usually finds and displays the players. This has happened 3-4 times
during the last couple of days.

Last night, when I turned to Squidget, it was displaying a laptop as a
player icon, although I only had a few regular Squeezeboxes of various
types connected to the server (i.e. no iPeng or Squeezeplayer). When I
pressed the player icon, it reported No items to display. When I
pressed it again, I could choose among the connected players. I started
Squeezecommander to search for a song and started playing it. When I
then went back to Squidget, it was again displaying the laptop icon.

Unfortunately I didn't think of looking at what player name Squidget
was displaying at the time.

Take a look at the attached image. The album itself is a 4-cd collection
where the individual cd's don't have any cover. So this tall image is
the only possible album art, and it looks horrible if drawn out to a

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squidget - A SqueezeBox Widget for Android

2011-05-02 Thread strindberg

Today I have seen several FCs related to the player list, i.e. when
bringing up the list of available players by pressing the icon for the
current player. There seems to be some situations when Squidget crashes
b/c of changes in the attached players.

In particular, it reliably crashes if I turn on iPeng on my iPod Touch,
with playback enabled. iPeng should show up as a player in the list, but
I never get to the list without Squidget crashing if iPeng is connected.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squidget - A SqueezeBox Widget for Android

2011-05-01 Thread strindberg

Great release!

I have had no stability issues so far, it seems to be working very
well.

I for one don't need a back button on hierarchical favorites, it's good
that you keep it simple.

One very minor detail I just noticed: on the 1x4 widget, if you switch
to the secondary view (pressing the little triangle), the name of the
current player stays visible at the top, and it looks a bit misplaced
there. I assume you didn't intend it to be visible, since it isn't in
the 2x4 version.

Another problem I found out about today: the handling of favorites seems
to assume that all favorites are in a flat list without folders.

I have my favorites organized in various folders. When I press the
favorites (heart) button in Squidget, I see a list of these folders.
Selecting one of these folders, the first favorite in that folder
starts playing.

I would have expected to go into that folder and be able to select one
of the favorites in that folder.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squidget - A SqueezeBox Widget for Android

2011-04-19 Thread strindberg

Loving this widgets, it's great!

Some cotmments:
* When I listen to Internet radio, it seems that Squidget is requesting
an update to the album art every second or so. I get a small work in
progress circle flashing every second. A bit annoying. I don't see it
when I play music from my library.
* I find the buttons that are visible on the 2x4 widget to be the once
I use, and I actually want the other buttons to be less accessible,
just as it is. I do have screen space to spare, however, so I would
like to use a 4x4 layout with the same number of buttons. In
particular, I don't use the favorite, star or facebook buttons at all,
and would prefer that they not be there at all.
* I can't find any way of seeing to which player I'm connected, without
pressing the the player icon and getting the lists of players. It would
be great if the current player was instantly visible somehow.
* The Squidget button really doesn't add any value to the user, does
it, apart from showing the about box. Could it be removed perhaps? The
player button is to tiny and could use the screen space.

Keep up the great work!

Re: [slim] Switch Squeezeboxes on/off from another Squeezebox?

2010-05-29 Thread strindberg

There really is a gap in functionality here. I can't understand why the
Logitech developers haven't made it possible to turn off another unit
w/o having to install a 3rd party plugin.

OtherPlayers is a great plugin, and I've used it for several years on
my Boom and Classic, but it shouldn't be needed, IMHO, with the new
Touch and Radio. Hopefully the functionality will be added.

Furthermore, with OtherPlayers you cannot control the volume of the
other boxes from a Touch or Radio (although it works on the Classic and
Boom), which means that you have to use the non-plugin way to change the
volume on another box, but OtherPlayers to turn it on or off, which is
not very intuitive.

[slim] Now playing not turned on automatically anymore?

I feel a bit confused, I am pretty sure the behavior I am seeing from my
Squeezebox Classic is different from before, but I am not sure if it's
an upgrade or my own tweaking that has changed it.

Anyway, as I remember it, if I would browse for some music, finding an
album, and pressing Play, the music would start playing, and after a
while (perhaps 10 seconds), the Now playing screen would show.

Today, the screen keeps showing wherever I was browsing when I hit
play, i.e. somewhere in the browse menu structure.

I have set the SB to show the Now playing screen after 10 seconds of
non-activity, and then I have MusicInfoSCR set as my default screen.

So, has there been a change in the software in the last updates?

last name). I've always been a great fan of the perhaps most famous of
Swedish writers, August Strindberg.

Funny thing is, years after I started using the alias, my mother told
me she always used to call my Dad Strindberg because of his brooding
character. So perhaps I inherited the nickname without realizing it.

Perhaps it would also be worth pointing out that this is an
international forum. Laws differ between countries. In many European
countries, copying music files from a close friend's collection would
be perfectly legal, even if the music in question is copyrighted.

Re: [slim] Radio Volume vs FLAC volume

2008-04-25 Thread strindberg

I wish SC could have a setting allowing one to set a default reduction
for audio sources which lack a specified replay gain, so if one
listened to internet radio there could be, say, a default -8 dB
applied. That should be pretty easy to implement, in wait for a more
sofisticated solution.

[slim] ReplayGain on Internet Radio?

2008-03-12 Thread strindberg

I use ReplayGain on my music library, which works very well, especially
with the SC smart gain setting.

However, as I switch between files in my library, Internet radio and
podcasts, the two latter are, naturally, not affected by the gain
setting. This is a problem, b/c the Internet radio and podcasts are
much louder, and I have to constantly adjust the volume.

Does anyone know of a way to, say, lower all internet radio by 8dB or
similar?

[slim] Swedish Radio as OPML

2008-03-11 Thread strindberg

If you're not particularly interested in Swedish Radio, you can safely
stop reading now.

I have recently been in contact with the support at Swedish Radio
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), asking whether it be possible for them to
provide an OPML resource for their podcasts, the way NPR does
(http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/opml.php).

They very quickly and very politely replied that my email had doubled
the number of requests for this feature. They are not against
implementing this, but need to investigate the demand and maintenance
cost of providing it.

The demand side of the equation is where you might help. If you feel
the need for such a feature, please drop a line to the above-mentioned
address, telling them you would appreciate if they implement such a
thing.

For those who haven't tried it, and OPML file from sr.se would make it
possible to make all the sr podcasts browsable from the Squeezebox (or
equivalent) in one sweep.

Thanks!

Sorry for the non-English.

En del leverantörer av poddradio exponerar en OPML-listning av sitt
poddradio-utbud, t.ex. NPR i USA
(http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/opml.php).

Re: [slim] Bug: Settings don't stick in Opera

2008-03-09 Thread strindberg

I think I found the problem: Opera doesn't seem to save cookies for
raw ip addresses.

I usually connect to the (private) ip address of my SC:
http://192.168.1.8:9000. After checking all the settings in Opera, and
restarting a couple of times, I noticed that all the cookies set by SC
were lost on every restart.

I changed the address to the local name of the SC server:
http://august:9000, and now the cookies last over a restart. Go
figure.

So I suppose this puts it down to a Opera bug (or feature?).

[slim] Bug: Settings don't stick in Opera

2008-03-08 Thread strindberg

I have been using Opera for accessing SC for a while now, due to the bug
which makes Firefox hog all the CPU when displaying SC. I have noticed
an annoying problem: when using Opera, some visual settings disappear
every time you restart the browser, settings which are saved when using
Firefox.

More specifically, I am talking about the settings for showing and
sorting albums (the little menu in the left hand corner where you can
choose Text only, Small Artwork, Sort by... etc), and whether or
not you want to display artwork in the playlist (the menu in the bottom
right, with alternatives Hide Artwork, Show Artwork).

It's a bit of a pain having to adjust these everytime I start the
browser. And I am still longing for the day when I can return to
Firefox...

[slim] Fun with SBC remote buttons?

2008-03-06 Thread strindberg

I just realized that there are at least two buttons on my Squeezebox
Classic remote that I never press: Favorites and Brightness. This
basically means that I have two buttons I could map to something more
useful (for me, that is, I'm not denying the potential usefulness of
these buttons for other people).

I was thinking along the lines of perhaps make the buttons jump
directly to Podcasts or AlienBBC, but then I thought: surely people
have done this before me?

So that's my question: what are your best ideas for remapping buttons
that you don't need?

[slim] Single artists in artist list when album artist set

2007-09-04 Thread strindberg

I have several albums (encoded to flac) with the following pattern:

Track: Artist:
Track01Artist A
Track02Artist A
Track03Artist A Artist B
Track04Artist A
Track05Artist A
...

To make this album show up as an album for Artist A, I have set
ALBUMARTIST to Artist A, and set COMPILATION=0, which works
well.

However, I also have set the Group compilation albums together to
avoid artists with only one or a few songs to clutter the artist list.
But with the above scheme, Artist A Artist B shows up in the artist
list!

Is this a known bug? And is there a possible work around?

Jesper

Check if this is the case for you, and if it is, you can update to one

Re: [slim] Songs found through Search but not through Browse

2007-05-09 Thread strindberg

kdf;200724 Wrote:
As would a cursory search of bugzilla, as suggested on the front page.
Even just the word composer would have done it. If you think it's too
much time to do that, then maybe you'll have some idea why the other
side of it might be a touch too busy to read 300 posts a day. It's not
a battle, just an attempt to spread some awareness.
 -kdf

I have debated with myself for a couple of hours whether I should reply
to this or not. Let me first state that I have no intention of starting
a flame war. Squeezebox and Slimserver seem to be terrific products
that I am in the process of learning how to use to the best effect.
Moreover, the large community of experienced users greatly adds to the
attraction. I can also see that kdf is one of the more active and
helpful people here.

I also realize that I have made (at least) three mistakes in reporting
this bug:

* I should have put my initial post in the Bugs forum, that would
probably have been more visible to the Slimdevices engineers. The
reason why I didn't was that it wasn't entirely clear to me that this
was a bug. The number of options for displaying artists is quite great,
and I didn't know if I had set some option the wrong way.

* I should have realized that 6.5.2 is indeed in beta. I didn't, until
recently. I just picked up the deb version which seemed most recent,
when I configured my new system a couple of weeks ago.

* I should of course have checked for previous bug reports on this
issue. The reason why I didn't was that during the three weeks since my
initial post, noone had suggested that this was a known issue. When I
wrote my first post, I didn't even know there was a public bug report
system.

BUT, if I now have stated what I have learned from this, let me also
say this:

The initial reports in both these threads were made by people who
obviously had put some effort into the issue: both Ur[s]uS and myself
included quite a lot of information in our posts, trying to outline
what we hade done to explore the problem. Neither one got any reply
indicating that this was a known issue, although the first bug report
was filed three weeks ago.

When I then (quite politely, IMHO) complained about this lack of
response in these forums, which supposedly is the main way of providing
support to users, I was met with insults by a senior member.

My only observation is that if users reporting issues in these forums
first are ignored, then insulted, SlimDevices do have a problem,
whether or not people here feel it is appropriate. Not every
(potential) user of Slimdevices' products can be expected to know what
it means to file a bug report, or even ask questions in the right way.
That even moderately knowledgeable users like myself fail to get help
is not good for Slimdevices, even if I made some mistakes in reporting
this issue.

Re: [slim] Songs found through Search but not through Browse

2007-05-08 Thread strindberg

Now I have worked out what causes this problem: it is indeed the
Composer tag in the files which makes Slimserver not display these
albums under their respective artist.

This is what happens: if any file in an album is tagged with a
Composer which is the same as the Artist, the album does not show
up when browsing by artist. The album shows up under All albums, and
also by searching the the artist.

Unless someone can explain why this bizarre behavior is intended, I
will file this as a bug. Although it is easy for me to remove the
Composer tag from my music, I think it is fair that one should be
able to have the tag set without the album disappearing from the
listings.

Again, this is on a recently updated 6.5.2 on Kubuntu Feisty Fawn.
6.5.1 on Windows does not exhibit the same problem. It does not have
anything to do with encodings, as far as I can tell.

Re: [slim] Songs found through Search but not through Browse

2007-04-25 Thread strindberg

Am I really the only one being hit by this? It sure seems like a pretty
bad bug to me.

I have done some more experimenting. First of all, I have made sure
that all mp3-tags are ID3v2.3, saved in iso-8859-1. I have also toggled
all possible settings regarding the grouping of songs in compilation
albums, although I don't think this problem has anything to do with
that.

Now I have limited my collection to four files, two mp3-files and two
flac-files.

The mp3-files belong to two different albums by David Sandström, the
flac-files belong to two different albums by Jacques Brel.

After a wipe and rescan, SS reports Your music library contains 4
albums with 4 songs by 2 artists. So far so good.

If I brows by album (Browse - Album in the web interface) I see all
four albums. The same if I browse by Artists, and then select All
Albums.

BUT: when I browse by Artists, and then select either one of the two
artists, only one album each is listed, although it should be two for
each artist.

So, to recapitulate: SS is well aware of there being four albums, I can
reach them through browsing on albums, or through searching, but if I go
through the individual artist, only one album is displayed.

This is still SS 6.5.2 on Kubuntu, upgraded through apt-get this
evening.

Re: [slim] Songs found through Search but not through Browse

2007-04-25 Thread strindberg

Yes, it is repeatable in the sense that these are not the only artists
for which the problem shows up. But it does not happen for every artist
with more than one album.

Quickly looking through some folders, I found more examples:
Les Negresses Vertes
Famille Nombreuse (shown)
Mlah (not shown)
Manu Chao
Clandestino (shown)
Proxima Estacion Esperanza (shown)
Radio Bemba Sound System (not shown)

I understand the problem with different encodings, but as you can see
above and from earlier examples, it's not really the names that do have
non-ascii characters that don't show up, so I don't really think this is
the problem. And furthermore, if it were an encoding problem, I guess I
shouldn't be able to find the albums through search. To me, it seems as
though SS finds the files and knows to which artists/albums they belong,
but that there is a problem in the display by artist-codde.

This worked on 6.5.1 on Windows. It's when I switched to Ubuntu and
then got 6.5.2 through apt that the problem showed up.
