[slim] Failed fetching filters from MusicIP

2012-10-24 Thread tamanaco

As suggested in the thread linked below I'm starting this new thread to
try and get to the source of the subject error message. I've been
getting the Slim::Plugin::MusicMagic::Common::__ANON__ (75) Failed
fetching filters from MusicIP error message in my log for the longest
time and have not been able to figure out what's causing it. I set
Filters to (NONE) in the MusicIP plugin settings, but I still get the
Failed fetching message. I also could not find a setting in SugarCube
for MusicIP filters and Trackstat is not enabled in SugarCube. Is there
a setting in another plugin I should check or a file or something
missing somewhere? I'm running the latest 7.8 LMS release with MusicIP
1.9 beta 6 on Windows 7. Btw, this issue is discussed towards the end of
this old thread

He! He!, to me (roughly) = ~ (After subsequent checks using a

enter to left hand pressing the Start/Stop button on the StopWatch).
Btw, this message is generated during server startup only... not while

Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?

2012-08-29 Thread tamanaco

All I'm looking for now is to continue to enjoy my local FLAC library
and some streams from the Internet via my home stereo system. I doubt
that I will buy another Logitech SB if my SB3 breaks as the SBs future
doesn't look too bright. At one point I bought a Touch (too small a
touch screen for me) and returned it because I still liked the retro
look of the SB3. I also have a copy of my music library in high bitrate
MP3 in the Google cloud that I use with Google Play Music app on my
Smartphone when I'm on the road. My wife also uses this library with the
Logitech Revue as she was never able to master the idiosyncrasies of my
SB3-LMS-Receiver setup. My understanding is that Google took the Nexus Q
back in house to figure out which market they want to target and to
improve it somehow. Given that the Q already supports Internet streamed
services... I wonder how difficult it would be to get it to run a
Squeezeplayer app that could run against LMS and display the player
interface on the TV via the Q's HDMI port.

Turning the TV on is optional you can always use a Smartphone Apps
like Squeeze Commander for Android or iPeng for iOS to navigate the
library and control the player. When you have friends over you can turn
on the TV and share the Album Art and information about the album, track
and artist.

Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug

2012-06-25 Thread tamanaco

As been said here, UPnP for video is fine if you keep away from large
video playlists... but for large categorized (carefully tagged) music
libraries the DLNA indexing mechanism leaves a lot to be desired.
Searching using the tags is also limitted. I own a Revue (Logitech
Google TV) and use a subset of my music library in MP3 format derived
from my main FLAC library so that my wife can listen to music using the
TV. I tried and failed to maintain a reliable music playing setup
using a UPnP/DLNA players and servers. I tried LMS with the DLNA server
enabled and with the Whitebear server (Whitebear being very reliable),
but always found issues related to the UPnP players being unable to
maintain a reliable index of the library. Using the Windows Media Player
from a PC proved to be the most reliable. If another of my Windows
computers with the DLNA server enabled entered the network the players
(LMP, aVia, GTVBox) in the Revue would sometimes associate with the
Windows computers instead of the LMS server. Indexing would have to be
started from scratch every time some communication issue occurred or
whenever indexing glitches came up during simple library updates... like
adding a new album. Of course, this would always happen when my wife had
friends over and wanted to play some music using the Revue. I found that
most of players that I tried lacked a settings granularity flexible
enough to allow me to display and search my library as I wanted. To make
a long story short, I opted to upload my MP3 library to the Google cloud
and use Google Music as a player in the Revue instead. It took a long
time to upload, but no more indexing issues. The library is rendered
quickly with all its album art and all the main tags are displayed
correctly.

That makes them a gigantic difference to me.

If one planned to get the Harmony 1000, it would maybe be smart to wait
for the lower priced Revue. If you planned to get the Harmony 900
because you need RF, the situation is also a bit different because
currently the 900 feels pretty expensive and even more so if you can
get a Revue with Wifi remote for $99

Maybe the Revue price drop could affect Harmony prices, but I don't
think so. When you read why they are dropping the Revue price you
realize it's because it's a new market and they want to establish the
product, this isn't they case for the Harmony remotes, they are already
in an established market and they have both fairly cheap and more
 expensive models.

Well, the Revue also has two hard button remote options: The Mini
Controller $129 and the Keyboard $99.
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/smartTV/accessories

They should lower the price of these accessories given that the Revue
has the same price or lower price than its accessories. I'm always
reluctant to get the first generation of any gadget because subsequent
generations usually have more functionality, have the bugs worked out
and are less expensive. That's the reason I did not jump at the Revue
in the first place. I considered it as a possible IR Universal Remote,
but at $249 it was out of the question. I'd still wait to see how the
Gingerbread update enhances the Revue/Google TV experience. I'm also
curious to find out if LMS will play a role as a media server for the
Revue.

I could easily see someone within Logitech management think, hmm, why
do we need this expensive music box which when we have the Revue which
is cheaper and can do so much more...

Of course, when you know the products it's a different situation, but I
doubt there are many (if even anyone) within Logitech management who
really understands what the Squeezebox products is all about.

However, if they drop the Harmony remotes, which is mentioned as
something they have had problems selling in the linked article in the
initial post, I would be very sad, because that really is an excellent
product. I wonder if I should get an Harmony One while it still
 exists...

Hopefully they will just drop the Revue and invest those resources on
Squeezebox and Harmony improvements instead :-)

Interesting an equivalent price drop for the existing SB Touch
would not be out of line. Btw, I think the review for $99 is a better
deal than buying a Harmony One. Correct me if I'm wrong... because I've
not read the specs of the Revue in a while. But... if I remember
correctly, the Harmony Remote engine is already in the review along
with IR blasters. All you need is the Harmony discrete codes for your
model Squeezebox and AV system to control everything with single
remote.

In my opinion SB3 is still the most awesome-looking piece of hardware
every made in this product line (designed by Slimdevices). I own Booms,
a Radio, a Receiver and a SB3, and while the SB3's fluorescent display
is not as flexible as a touchscreen, it just looks classy and is nicely
readable even from a distance. Also, can't beat it dimmed in the
sleeping room where an LCD is always too bright.

Boom and radio are nice in terms of not needing an amplifier, they fit
their purpose, but they just don't have the looks of the SB3 and seem
built with less care for quality...too much plastic. As for the
receiver/controller pair, I might trade it any day for an SB3,
especially in these times of iPeng the controller is slow, inflexible
and not very userfriendly. The touch aims at continuing the SB3's line,
but the display is just not the same feel.

Logitech, please bring back an SB3-like model, with nice design, maybe
a (tiny) set of somewhat hidden and invisible buttons (e.g. on the side
or on top), and with a bigger fluorescent display, and I'll be in
Squeezebox heaven. Maybe also a flat one for wall-mounting?

I'm on the same boat... the SB3 up to this point (for me) has been the
pinnacle of the SB players. Great sound quality without too many bells
and whistles. The ability to quickly select a track, album or
streamed service that I want to listen. at that moment, is most
important. Want a display?... You got it!... Don't want or need a the
native display?... dim it or turn it off. Need a remote? Use the
included dummy remote. If you want to get fancy and want color album
art, info and lyrics on the palm of your hand... get a one of the
remote apps for smartphones or buy the controller.

Most important thing when I get home and want to relax... is to get a
drink and and turn on the music without too much fuzz. Listen to what I
feel like and avoid having to interact with the apparatus that's playing
the music... I just want to relax and listen. That's the reason I got
the box in the first place.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox ( MySqueezebox.com) DOWN!!!

2011-05-24 Thread tamanaco

Discarding mysb.com is easy for those that bought their SBs just to
connect to a local server, but what about those that bought them to use
them with mysb.com? Maintaining a local server is not a walk in the park
for those that lack computer skills. Too many things can go wrong with
an SBS which makes it difficult for your average person to diagnose.
Server hardware, OS, network connectivity, is the SBS app running,
viruses, server crash... etc. Some of my friends and some members of my
family use their SB3s and boom boxes just to listen to Pandora and to a
couple foreign radio stations. Do they need the additional expense and
complexity of an SBS server? I know, there are plugins that allow power
the server on/off... but try asking an elderly member of your family to
configure the SrvCntrl plugin and WOL in the LAN remotely. With
mysb.com when a family member or friend has an issue and the SB is
on... I can quickly narrow it down to network connectivity. If mysb.com
is working from my house they are either having ISP issues or their
router is down. (I acknowledge that lately mysb.com has not been as
reliable as it has been in the past). But rarely does the
hardware/firmware of the boxes fails or do my friends or family have
issues with the LAN connectivity to mysq.com making it easy with just a
computer with a browser from the LAN to determine where the connectivity
issue lies. (LAN or ISP). Something that the average Joe can do.
Mysb.com also serve as an aggregator for all the Internet stream music
services and radio stations. You only need a single id and password of
mysb.com configure in your box to get access to all your subscriptions
from a single point. Without this remote single point of aggregation
one has to locally maintain all the ids and passwords... if the Local
server fails think of all the things you have to do to get a failed
server up and running just to listen to one of your Pandora favorites?
To me one of the advantages of my Squeezebox is that I don't end up with
a brick if my server fails or if I decide to turn my SB server off to
save a few cents on electricity. Again, I agree that the mysb.com needs
to be made more reliable and that Logitech should continue to enhance
this service.

Re: [slim] Possibility to build dedicated controller based on Android?

Question: Dedicated controller necessary?

- The original Controller works well!
- Yes, such a controller would be the icing on the cake!

Muele;624649 Wrote:

Sure, if it came from Logitech, maybe it would generate a few extra
sales but probably not enough to justify the effort. For existing
customers I think aftersales of such a controller would be close to 0.
Based on the expected pricetag of such a device, compared to what
 alternatives are out there.

I have different speculative take. I believe Logitech would like to
increase their share of the streamed media market. This is evident by
their acquisition of SlimDevices and their partnership with Google. So
far, as separated offerings the SqueezeBox and Revue have not been very
successful. I would not be surprised if the Squeezebox and the Revue
were integrated to give customers a fully integrated stream media
solution. The Revue already has the functionality of a Harmony remote
including an IR blaster to control AV components. Adding a bit of
hardware to make it into a SqueezeVue or ReSqueeze should not be that
hard and it would remove the hardware fragmentation they currently have
with music and video stream players. The recent development of LMS
hints that Logitech is moving in this direction either with completely
new hardware box that can take advantage of their new Media Server,
currently under development, or with the integration of their existing
assets in an enhanced Revue box. This also would allow them to
integrate their streamed media development and cut cost. With such a
device it would then be possible to control all of your AV components
with a single remote and even allow you to view your album art using
your computer, Smartphone and on your TV if you so desire. The Revue
already has a Smartphone remote app. Again, this is all speculation,
but given that LMS is also a video server and that the current product
line has no offerings to take advantage of this additional server
functionality... makes one wonder.

Something like that, I'd definitely consider buying, but not a

Until they release something like that, I'll continue using the Harmony
IR remote or the iPad with SqueezePad or iPeng depending on what kind of
 operation I'd like to do.

I'm on the same boat, but I use Android instead of iOS. If LMS becomes
a successful Logitech mainstream product maybe they'd consider
developing a hybrid Harmony AV Remote + LMS Controller.

When the existing Controller was under development. I remember asking
about building a hybrid using Logitech's Harmony code. At the time, if
I remember correctly, I was told that there were some intellectual
capital restrictions that prevented the Harmony developers from sharing
code with the Controller developers. Maybe these restrictions no longer
apply. Having such a remote from the get-go would make LMS a more
appealing Media Server.

I think I phrased my questrion a bit confusingly: I was really
wondering whether someone (not Logitech) would be able to transform any
kind of Android phone (I took Android as it is a supposedly more open
system) into a Squeezebox controller via some kind of hack (removing
the lockscreen and single-tasking the controller app).

I don't mind using a phone 'only' as a controller, seeing as I would be
spending the same amount for Sonos' dedicated controller.

Why does it have to be a hack? There are SBS remote control
applications for Smartphones. Have you looked at SqueezeCommander?
That's the application I use for Android to control my Squeezebox
setup. I think there one or two more similar Android apps.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-03-11 Thread tamanaco

A bit off topic

I have been using SqueezeCommander for a while and I'm very happy with
it. Thank you very much. Little improvements are needed here and there,
but nothing related to the scope of its existing (defined) functionality
that I'd complain about. My issue is that I need another device (remote)
just to turn my receiver on/off and to adjust some of its settings. I
understand that SqueezeCommander is not a Universal remote, but if
one could add just the function to power on/off receivers it would be
perfect for me.

Looking around I noticed that right now with an iPhone one can have a
remote for the SB (iPeng) and a Universal IR remote unified in a single
device. I don't think I'll ever get an iPhone... so I'd like a similar
solution for my Android phone, but I have been unable to find it.
Looking around I found the following 3 solutions to control AV systems
via IR using an iPhone which requires the purchase of a wireless IR
blaster. I could not find anything similar to these for Android.

http://us.gear4.com/product/_/93/unityremote/?cid=31
http://www.slashgear.com/peel-fruit-turns-iphone-into-show-suggesting-universal-remote-08118392/
http://www.slashgear.com/griffin-beacon-makes-your-iphone-4-a-universal-remote-07124546/

My question to the SqueezeCommander developer is... How difficult would
it be for SqueezeCommander to accommodate the necessary wireless
interface to communicate with one of these wireless IR blasters?

One way would be to have an agreement with the makers of one of these
blasters and license the interface from then and incorporate into
SqueezeCommander. It will probably cost too much money to justify it,
but one can only wish. Take a look at the video about the UnityRemote
in the link above... I'd like to something similar to this for my
Android phone, but with the functionality of SqueezeCommander.

The other way... probably not legal... is to capture and replicate the
wireless signals from one of these apps. I know that recording the IR
signal from any of these blasters to the components is easy (most
Universal remotes have a record function) but how difficult would it be
to record the wireless signal from one of these apps to the IR blasters?
I doubt they're secured (encrypted). Just having an app that replicates
the signals that are required to turn several receivers on/off from my
Android phone would be enough for me. Having SqueezeCommander do it
within its interface would be perfect.

Just a thought... I know that my iPhone-loving friend, who also owns a
SB3 because I recommended it.. is thinking of buying the UnityRemote...
I hate to have him show me another thing that he can easily do with
his device.

My other hope is that gears4 is also developing a UnityRemote app for
Android.

Back on topic...

Ok, problem solved. Knowing that *(WOL)* needed to appear and the end
of the Server IP address line helped me solve the issue. I removed and
re-added the server to the list. I think the issue was due to the
keyboard adding a space after the : in the last hex pair of the MAC
address. Removing the extra space with backspace removed the space
while editing, but for some reason, once I hit Ok the space I removed
using the backspace was somehow re-added. I used my finger to place the
cursor after the existing : in the last Hex pair of the MAC and it
worked. I also re-installed the WOL app and now shows an option to send
the packets as broadcast which did not appear before under the settings.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-08-09 Thread tamanaco

After playing with Commander for a week I'm very happy with the way I
can navigate my server library and squeezenetwork services. The only
things I wish I had is access to the Extras menu. This way I can use
plugins like Server Power Control to put my SB Server to sleep and like
Sugarcube to turn on/off my dynamic MusicIP playlist. It would also be
nice if one could create MusicIP mixes from the Music Library and to
view Album Reviews. I know... I know... it takes time.

The only thing I noticed that's not working for me is WOL. I have to
use my laptop to wake up my server. Pressing Connect to my server
(already configured for WOL with the correct MAC) fails to wake up the
server. Am I missing a button somewhere to send the WOL packets? Btw,
I'm not sure if it is an issue with my Captivate Running Android 2.1. I
also downloaded an App called WOL and it also fails to wake up the
server. The WOL tool is configured to send 5 wake up packets every 5
seconds, but it does not do anything either. My laptop is connected via
WiFi to the same router. I use Fusion WOL to send the WOL packets to my
server and it works just fine. I would be nice if I didn't need to use
my laptop to wake up the server or use the IR remote to put the server
to sleep.

One more thing... is there a way to clear the current playlist? I would
like to add several tracks/albums while there are no tracks playing
(Blank Playlist) But... it would also be nice if there was an option to
clear the playlist except for the currently playing track.

relied on MAC addresses, but I could be wrong. Can you WOL your server

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-08-02 Thread tamanaco

Nice! 1st paid app I put in my two-week old Samsung Captivate. So
far... so good. There are a few things that would be nice to have, but
they might be unreasonable or impossible to implement.

I like that the app uses WOL to wake up the server, but I still have to
grab the old remote and switch my SB3 from mysqueezebox.com to my
squeezebox server. A long time ago I asked if there was a way to switch
the Squeezebox from from SBN to a default SBS via the Web interface or
programatically, but I think I was told that there was no such
functionality. My SB3 is connected to SBN while my dedicated SBS
sleeps. The PowerCntrl plugin has a similar problem. It automatically
switches my SB3 to SBN and puts my server to sleep, but I still have to
grab the old remote to turn the SB3 off to display the clock.

To use the search function after the application is started requires at
least 3 clicks. Music Library - Artist/Album - Search. Sometimes both
the Menu and Search (physical buttons) bring up the Music Library. Once
the app has loaded... it would be nice if just pressing the Search
button brought up a little window that let you you select Artist or
Album... and Internet Station (In the future... if possible)

Also... maybe implement something similar to the search function of the
Contacts list. Like the ability to select the first letter of the
track/artist/album from a list of letters on the side or display a
large letter in the middle of the list as one scrolls up/down.

I use SpiceFly Sugarcube it would be nice if there was a way to turn it
on/off from Commander.

Very low in priority - The color scheme is nice, but I find it a bit
dark. Are color adjustments and skins features that we can expect down
the road?

I just installed Commander... so maybe some these features are already
planned, already requested or impossible. These were the things that
came to mind at first glance. I have not played with the app for long
or had time to read the whole thread.

Thanks for the great app.

You should be able to switch your SB3 from SBS to MSB (and vice versa)

use the context menu of the Player).

What I was trying to say was... that my SB3 is usually connected
directly to mysqueezebox.com when turned off (the server is sleeping).
I just want to use Commander in my Android phone, nothing else, to
control the SB3. I'm able to connect to mysqueezebox.com and turn on my
SB3 using Commander (not a problem), I can Wake up my SBS using WOL in
Commander (not a problem). While my server is waking up, I can connect
back to mysqueezebox.com using Commander and control my SB3, but I can
not make my SB3 connect to my SBS using Commander via
myqueezebox.com. I have to grab the IR Remote and switch the SB3 from
mysqueezebox.com to connect to the squeezebox server. I just wanted to
use my phone from outside the house (within WiFi range) and start
playing music from my server. No matter what, I have to go inside the
house and use the IR remote if I want to switch the SB3 from
mysqueezebox.com to my server.

Note that if my server is on and my SB3 is connected to it... I can put
my server to sleep and switch my SB3 to mysqueezebox.com using the
Server Power Control Plugin. I can then go to mysqueezebox.com via a
browser or using Commander and turn off my SB3. Server sleeps and the
SB3 is displaying the time and I did not have to go inside the house to
use the IR remote.

Btw, I believe that what I’d like to do is a function that’s not
currently available when one interfaces to with the squeezebox via
mysqueezebox network. You can play music, you can add favorites, you
can turn the SB3 on/off… etc, etc… but you can not make the SB3 connect
to a server.

I still think I'm not explaining what I want to say very well.

Back to the Logitech box... from what I can see from the video demo I
posted in this thread
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79006 The Logitech box
besides having Google TV (A Google Experience that allows search for
media content with a customized browser for TV), the Logitech box will
also incorporate the Harmony remote engine that can be controlled via a
Smarphone or any mobile device using Android and WiFi. The Logitech box
is also IR Blaster which will allow you to send IR commands to the rest
of your AV System components. In essence giving you the Harmony
activity-centric way of controlling your AV components. Google's
approach appears more open to other content sources like Apple TV
because of its search engine and browser, but believe me, Google TV
will prioritize Gooogle's content so that it generates revenue for
Google. The one thing that might become attractive about the Google
TV solution is the strong possibility of Google TV for mobile devices.
Google is all about cloud-computing and the content that it owns is
already in the cloud. In the US making deals with studios that will
allow their content be use via Google Youtube Private and Secured
Channels does not sound that far out. Porting SBS to Android and making
it a component of the Logitech box along with Google TV might be a
little farther out.

I also believe that Google has pockets deep enough to make something
positive/negative happen. Small and independent companies like Vudu
that can only license content, do not own internet content (youtube) or
have the influence that only $oo$le has.

it was working fine for me with previous releases of SBS. My library has
tons of World music and I have used accented characters in the tags,
path, and files names. I'm not about to rename them as I feel that it
takes away an aesthetic aspect of my library.

I have not been using the M in the Web UI to generate MusicIP
frequently enough to notice that it was not picking up accented
characters. I have been using SpiceFly SugarCube and this plugin uses
MusicIP to create its dynamic playlists. As far as I can tell,
SugarCube has no issues retrieving tracks from MusicIP that have
accented characters. I guess there is something that SugarCube is doing
to handle these MusicIP exceptions. I can use a seed track with foreign
characters in its path, file name, and tag and SugarCube retrieves the
next track. It even retrieves next tracks with accented characters in
them. Maybe... just maybe... some method could be added to the
MusicIP plugin or SBS so that it can retrieve the MusicIP generated
tracks in a similar way that SugarCube does. Having to rename all my
existing files and having to edit tracks that are automatically named
correctly as I rip them with dBpowerAMP is not an option for me. I
also want to maintain the integrity (The correct names of Artists,
Albums and Tracks) of my library as I don't use it exclusively with SBS
and in the future a better player/mixer might come up that has no issues
with these characters.

This character encoding has been an issue with many versions of
SqueezeCenter/Slimserver. Very frustrating. I resisted 'fixing' my
filenames as well, but now I gave in, and changed my library.

See also bugs I filed earlier (which probably will never be fixed since
it is under the 7.4.* version):
 http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15486
 http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15701

I my case SC creates mixes, but only with tracks that have no accented
characters. If I select a track with accented characters as the seed SC
will generate a mix, but the seed track won't be in the play list. Also,
none of the other tracks added to the playlist have accented
characters.

With SugarCube I can use a track with accented characters as the seed
and this track plus subsequent dynamically added tracks to playlist...
play without a problem. This includes dynamically added tracks with
accented characters in their tags, path and files names.

[slim] Have the SD servers been moved to a new hardware or to a new ISP?

2010-04-14 Thread tamanaco

In the past couple days the respond of the UI of the forum,
mysqueezebox.com and the servers from where I download the builds
either loose connection or are too slow to respond. This morning I
could not download the latest 7.51 build because the download time out
several times. mysqueezebox.com kept disconnecting my SB3 and when it
connected the streams would stop and restart. Something changed at the
data center servers, with a router in the data center or with an ISP
router on the way there... I'm in NYC and all the other internet
services that I use are working as usual. I tried restarting my router
and my computers several times, but it made no difference. When I run
streaming services like Pandora directly from my computer I have no
problems with the streams. Coincidence?... or Am I going crazy over
here?

Nice!... but as others have said, the gadget takes a little bit too much
horizontal (valuable) desktop space. It would be nice if the control

on the gadget to display the controls.

Btw, I noticed that while playing internet stations and services the
album Art does not update. I only the generic radio icon is displayed.

 should solve the issue.

Hi Frank, I've been using ACC with the TPE2 option disabled and have
tested with it enabled with the same result. What I can not understand
is why is only happening with this specific Various Artist (Compilation)
Album. There is a character of some tag there that is making ACC treat
it differently. I use the same tag and folder naming scheme with all the
other Various Artist (Compilations) Albums in my library and ACC
displays them as expected. I must have over 100 compilations albums. As
I said before, SC does not have any issues with this album and catalogs

I've been trying to get the Aspire Revo 3610 (2nd Generation) with Core
Duo processor and Win 7 64bit, but no reputable US based store or online
retailer has it in stock. The MSRP is $329. I can only find it for more
money in eBay from a Taiwanese outlet or from an outlet in Canada. I was
hoping that Acer was going to announce something about the Revo at CES,
but I have not heard anything yet. There is either something wrong with
the US supply pipeline for 3610 series or the series has been
discontinued.

It appears as a deactivated item at newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103234Tpk=acer%20aspire%20r3610%20revo

One issue that some folks have reported is that they're unable use WOL
to remotely wake up the Revos. There is supposedly a BIOS setting to
enable this function, but it appears not to be working. Anyone here
running SC on an Aspire Revo and using WOL?

 single case not.

I will use the album tags you included to set up a test case in order
to optimize the detection. This will probably be in the weekend though

detecting of various artists and can the detection code in ACC be
removed. To be investigated I guess... I'll be back ;-)

I understand what you're saying, but ACC sorted other various artists

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v2

2010-01-03 Thread tamanaco

Maybe I spoke too soon... anyway... this is a different cosmetic
issue.

I have a couple Spanish albums names that start with either ¡ or ¿.
These exclamation and question marks should be ignored and instead the
first letter of the Album Name should be used to sort them. See
¡Cubanismo! Albums listed under in the picture below.

I use the Genre, Album Artists and Album Name tags to build my folders
structures. All my various artists albums in SC and ACC are displayed as
expected except for one album. The relevant album tags for this album
are: Album Artists: Belly Dance (Various Artist), Album Name: The Best
Belly Dance Album in The World... Ever! Vol. 2., the album compilation
flag is also set to 1 and every track has the correct Artist associated
with it. As you can see in the pics below the SC Web UI lists the Album
as expected under the Artist Belly Dance (Various Artist), but it
appears that ACC changes the Album Artist tag to Various Artist. Note
that ACC does not change the album Roots Of Rumba Rock 2 whose Album
Artist tag is displayed correctly as Zaire Classics (Various Artists)
and which also has the compilation flag set to 1. I hope, this time, I
explained the problem in a way you can understand.

[slim] Apple acquires lala.com... What's Stevo's next move?

2009-12-07 Thread tamanaco

I can't help, but think that Steve Jobs' next move after the acquisition
of lala.com is to go after services like Pandora, Last.FM, Slacker and
Spotify. It probably also means that the streaming services are going
to be integrated into iTunes. I think this can become another great move
by the master because if it works... iTunes will gain a streaming and a
music media social environment. I can already picture an iStreamBox
that would give the SQBX a run for the money. iTunes with an
incorporated stream music server component, would instantly gain the
existing iTunes user base...to me it appears as natural evolution of
iTunes for the iFolks. The Apple Apps Store could also be easily
integrated in the mix in order to distribute Apps similar to plugins for
the iStreamBox and/or specialized iPod Docking stations. This apps, like
plugins, would enhance the music listening experience for free or for a
fee and expand the Apple Apps Universe. Next move down the line for
Stevo... iTtunes video streaming

What do you think?... Am I dreaming here?

That's all I'm specualting about here. Will I buy an iStreamBox?...
probably no... If Apple successfully integrates what I mentioned above

to download the stream and keep the connection alive. I read an
announcement about a new generation of low power consumption Wi-Fi
adpaters. Maybe this box will be using one of those.

The other issue using batteries besides the power amp is going to be if

The only option addition I'd welcome is to be able to choose to have
the track listing produced in a larger font size (without needing to
adjust it via my browser's settings each time I view the catalogue). For

I also have old eyes. To avoid the font restriction I print a .pdf file
of the catalog that can be read, re-sized and searched easily using
Adobe reader. I even carry a copy of my catalog in .pdf format in my
Smartphone to make sure I don't buy a CD that I already own. It's also
useful when buying compilation CDs to make sure you don't already own
the majority of the tracks in the compilation.

I also don't know exactly what is meant by print pagination. What I
do is a Print Preview and in the preview I adjust the top/bot/sides

have you'll need to be patient for the Print Preview to adjust the

reprint the catalog after I have added 4 or more CDs.

2009-08-17 Thread tamanaco

I share Moonbase's feelings also... specially this point... There is no
clear path where to go. What are the goals, where is the target
market?. The move to SQLite (possibly to accommodate the new product
line) and then back to MySQL completely left the existing MySQL users,
like myself, wondering what to do. Do I stick with MySQL? Is SQLite the
future... and if so why? Because of the new product line?... because
NASes need a smaller OS footprint?... because it has better
performance?... Should I plan to move to SQLite or not? Nothing has been
clearly articulated. The existing user base is confused... I know
betas are betas, but there is no clear vision (strategy) to which clear
goals (strategy) are attached. What I fear is that the plugin developers
will get frustrated with the platform changes. They have either stopped
development (enhancements) of their current plugins or have not
introduced new ones in quite some time. Palm OS is a great example of
developers moving on to greener pastures when Palm failed to communicate
a clear vision for them. Look at the number of Palm application and then
find how many of those have been enhanced or developed recently.

This sounds reasonable... but my fear is that Logitech will move the
development resources from the current 7.4 MySQL platform to the future
SQLite before the 7.4 MySQL is fully baked. Plugin developers might
not want to work on a platform that will be sunset in the near future. I
think a clearly articulated framework to move the plugins from this
platform to the next to lessen the blows would help. I might be way out
on left field here... but if the plugins that are developed for
officially released 7.4 were to work without much effort on the SQLite

too many plugins.

Re: [slim] New Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch spotted !!

2009-08-14 Thread tamanaco

Unless the Boom gets one of those yet-to-be-released new generation low
power consumption wifi adapters or uses 3G/4G, I doubt that a mobile
option would be practical or make sense to me. The Boom box is first and
foremost a streamed digital music player. (Streamed from a local Music
Library on a server or streamed from online Internet Radio stations and
Service) If you want to play streamed music at a decent volume while
connected via wifi... the batteries will drain in no time. Adding a USB
port to connect an external USB drive makes sense, but you would still
need an AC adapter. A SDHC slot to hold at most 32GB (based on currently
available capacities) is not enough storage for me to justify carrying
such big box. I carry my mp3 player with portable battery-powered
external speakers (not even a dock) for when I want to share my music
with others on the go. I tried using my SmartPhone to stream Pandora
(using 3G which consumes less power)and it was not practical without
an AC adapter. Compact rechargeable battery technology that supports
that amount of constant drain for prolonged periods of time... is still
not there yet... as far as I know.

Re: [slim] New Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch spotted !!

2009-08-11 Thread tamanaco

In the last fews weeks, as you can see in their blog, Logitech has
announced a bunch of new products. Hopefully an announcement for the
Sqeezebox Touch and other new SD related products will come soon.

Today Logitech announced the Logitech 900 Universal remote... Basically
and improved Harmony One with RF, a couple extra buttons and a higher
resolution screen. Besides my SB3 I have a bunch of other components
(including a Vudu box that uses RF) that I would like to control with a
single remote. This new Harmony has the potential to control everything
without jumping to many hurdles. I understand that the Harmony remotes
have no WiFi, but I hope that with this remote Logitech will add
specific profiles on their Web site fot the old IR Squeezeboxes and the
boxex yet to be officially announced.

At one point I almost bought the Controller, but I noticed that
development of its software has either slowed dramatically or gone
underground. What I mean by underground is that maybe the development
folks from SD/Logitech are concentrating on products yet to be announced
which might also include a new and improved Controller. Again, this is
all speculation on my part. I just hope the Logitech announces the new
family of SD products soon so that I can make up my mind.

AMOLED screens are clear and the pixels are faster and brighter than the

technology: Resistive and capacitive. Resistive ones need pressure,
capacitive screen sense the finger on the screen instead, so you don't

I understand the technology behind the screens, the issue is that the

pressure on them. But... I guess I can get used to not trying to push my

To further speculate... could that be a AMOLED touch screen?

My SB3 sits on my AV system cabinet... if I touch the screen it moves
around the shelf as nothing is holding it down. I have to assume that
this device is either much heavier than an SB3 or has some mechanism to
help it stay in place when one touches it. I won't be getting off the
sofa frequently to skip a songs... but when I do... I won't be putting
my beer down. The touch screen has to be sensitive enough so that not
much finger pressure is required to navigate the menus. I guess one will
be able to set it to display even larger fonts than the ones available

Re: [slim] Who's going to fill Sean's shoes - technically?

2009-05-28 Thread tamanaco

I agree with a lot of the things that are being said here. I own a
Harmony remote, a couple of Logitech Mice, UE Super.fi IEMs and, of
course, a Squeezebox. Most of these, except for the Mice, were made by
companies that Logitech eventually acquired. As Erland mentioned, so
far, Logitech has not disappointed and I hope the trend continues. (Not
a Logitech fan, per se, just a victim of its acquisitions)

Like other early SB adopters, I fear that by making the SB line appeal
to the masses it'd loose its edge. But... so far, I have not seen any
major change in a direction that would lead me to suspect that the
quality of the SB line is being jeopardized by the Logitech acquisition.
I feel that in order to get more commercial Logitech does not need to
compromise the sound quality, the open software model, the plugins API
(modularity) or the plethora of user interfaces. But... it needs to come
up with a simple basic (out the box plug n play) setup that any user
can put together without the need of an engineering degree. The task is
not easy, because the SB interfaces with SC (Local client server setup),
with SN (Remote Service Agregator setup) and a mix of these setups when
you use SN via SC. To me installing and configuring the connections
(SB-SC-SN)-Stereo are the stumbling blocks to the mass market... not
the existing hardware/software technology behind SD/Logitech.

I bought a Vudu box a few month ago and recently gave my sister one for
Mother's day. She was able to install her Vudu box without my help. I
can not say the same for the SB3 I gave her last year. The Vudu box has
a LAN interface, a stereo interface, a video interface and a RF remote.
I have not been able to visit her since Mother's day and so she decided
to install the Vudu box herself. She plugged the thing in the wall and
to the TV via the HDMI cable (included) and the box walked her through
the setup with audio and video from the TV. Setting up and using a Vudu
box is a no-brainer. If no video connection exist, the box using audio
tells you to check the video connections, if you get video, but not
sound, the box displays video instructions to troubleshoot the audio
connection. Audio-visual instructions are also given if the box can not
connect to the Internet via the LAN. The video and sound streaming
technology behind this box is somewhat similar to that of the SB. It
even has built-in Pandora, Picasa and Flcker clients, but my sister did
not need my help to set up any of these services either. What makes it
easy is that the box discovers (detects) the video, sound and network
components it needs to connect for the box to be functional.

I understand that the SB might not have sufficient resources
(intelligence) to build such model and that what I'm suggesting can not
be put together overnight, but maybe some of this discovery
intelligence can be implemented in the SC or SN. So that after
connecting the SB to the AC power and Ethernet...(assuming that DHCP
services are available) the SB should be able to somehow connect to the
SC (if available) or SN without much fanfare. Once either of these
connections is established, the SB box should display messages on its
screen to complete the setup. I know, I know... I'm dreaming again.

Re: [slim] Any new toys coming out from SD

2009-04-19 Thread tamanaco

I lean to the side of having the audio solution separated from the video
solution. To begin the formats of the source files are different, are
processed differently and the different formats will evolve over time
and at different pace. A better format for audio or video that requires
different hardware might emerge and render half of the combined
Audio/Video box obsolete.

Like many others I believe that disc (CD/DVD/BR) media is on its way
out. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually. There are several
solutions related to video content that have already been mentioned
here. Recording off the air/cable/Intenet (DVR-like) purchasing the
content (DVD/Blueray) and VOD. Having a mix of all these in one box is
something that companies like Tivo are trying to tackle.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but having a solution similar to the
Squeezebox solution for video is a bit more complicated. To begin,
ripping DVDs is not as straight forward as ripping CDs. Most DVDs have
copy protection and copyright restrictions that currently would make
the development of a legal and commercially viable DVD ripping
program almost impossible. The number of licenses required to produce
such product will require the legal team from hell because the movie
studios copyright contracts are very complex and restricts the way of
how, when and for how long you can use their content. VOD streams and
digital video purchases are tied to the ID of one single box. If you
buy a digital video for box x you can not play it in box y. Even if the
box is made by the same vendor. I doubt that this will change much in
the near future as the movie studios learned a valuable lesson from
what happened to the music studios. They know that content is king and
will protect the goose that lays the golden video eggs at all cost.

Dream
As I mentioned in another thread, Logitech should try to acquire a
company like Vudu that already has a purchasing video service, a VOD
service and a box with some of best video quality (HDX) around. They
can enhance the Vudu box (or a similar product) and make it a video
companion box to the Squeezebox and build a single user interface to
control both. Not a browser-based interface, but something with an
interface like the one on the Tivo or Vudu boxes which can be
controlled with a single remote while interfacing with the TV or a
Computer. I might be a little bit biased here because I own a Vudu box,
but I like their pay as you go VOD and their SD/HD/HDX video purchase
models. Adding an off the air/cable/Intenet (DVR-like) module that
saves content on a server will make it a full audio-video solution.

i also use a mac, and the musicip implementation is rather poor.

What do you mean by error prone?... Delays?... Picks tracks that you
were not expecting? Fails to pick tracks?

Have you tried MusicIP using the more stable Windows platform? I have
listened to Genius generated mixes, but the resulting Genius mixes are
not as diverse as the ones that I get from MusicIP. If I don't set any
limitations on variety, I get to listen to tracks in my library that I
never knew I had. My FLAC library is ~230GB.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. MusicIP bases its mixes on sound
signature tags (or if not embedded on tags, on an index of signatures
associated with the tracks). The mixes are generated locally using
these signatures. No need to be connected to the MusicIP server to
generate mixes. I'm not too familiar with the technology behind Genius.
How exactly are Genius mixes generated? Do they require a connection to
iTunes... and if so why?

How about a Controller-Universal Remote. Now that Logitech owns SD a
SqueezeHarmony remote with a numbers keypad and touchscreen shouldn't
be so hard to do.

The question is just what it's worth without the lead developers of
 MusicIP.

If the knowlege of the MusicIP architecture and source code has been
transfered to other persons in the company there has to be a business
opportunity for Logitech. However, if this isn't the case the value for
Logitech might just be the patents and algorithms behind the mixing and
analyzing logic, which might be hard to use without the lead
developers. The fact that nothing has been released for almost a year
 is a bit worrying.

MusicIP is unique and it offers a mixing functionality which is
something SqueezeCenter IMHO really needs to take the next step.

I agree that it would be a lot harder to integrate without the lead
developers and lead architect. But... assuming there is nothing there
execept for the patents and algorithms... Logitech can dedicate a small
developers team to decipher the architecture and code. This way they can
save themselves the time and pain required to develop something similar
from scratch. What if a competitor like Sonos were to get a hold of
MusicIP's intellectual capital? They might modify the server to
restrict existing clients. Not to mention that if they own the patents
they might use them to extract licensing fees. Of course, I'm
speculating here as I don't know if MusicIP is available for purchasing
or licensing. If it were available, during negotiations and under a NDA,
Logitech can uncover details to see if it is worth acquiring it or
licensing it. Again, I'm not disagreeing with your statements above, I
just like to be a little bit more optimistic and believe that there is
something there that Logitech can use to enhance SC. Withhout having to
re-invent the wheel, Logitech could integrate MusicIP in SC and even
keep MusicIP as an independent entity to generate additional revenue if
they acquire them. Something similar to what Logitech did with SD. With
a little injection of capital and some good marketing MusicIP can be
into a standard for digital music mixes... not only for SC, but for
other digital music player.

Phil, it will still analyze music only slower. I maintain a PC and SB3

Correct, but not having the MusicIP server to accelerate the analysis
will make it very inconvenient for new users with large libraries to
integrate the MusicIP function and for existing user that want to
listen to mixes based on new library additions ASAP.

Dream It also removes the possibility of adding a suggest-a-track
function/service based on the signatures of tracks in the MusicIP server
database. In other words, an enhanced client could be developed that
would display the name(s) and link(s) to sample previews of one or
several tracks in the MusicIP server which have similar signatures to
that of the currently playing song. /Dream

I'd also add my name to the list of those that can't live without
MusicIP and without its excellent derivative the SugarCube plugin.
