Re: [slim] Long ethernet cable network integrity?
The maximum length of a cat5 run is supposed to be 100m (330ft) so you're exceeding the maximum length by reaching 400ft. A quick hack could be to force your switch and squeezebox to use 10mbit instead of 100mbit and see if that helps. Other solutions: If you put, say, 2 lengths of 200ft each with a switch or hub in between, you should be able to make it. The switch will retransmit the signal allowing you another 100m. You'll probably need to use solid core cable, though - you're not supposed to use more than 10m of stranded cable per run. What type of cable are you using? Do you know if it's solid core (solid core is more difficult to bend than stranded cable)? Alternatively, get two switches with fibre uplink (100BASE-FX) and do it that way. This will give you a maximum run of over 1000ft so you can have one switch at your server and one in the shack. You should be able to find used switches cheap, though I couldn't tell you how much the cable will cost. If the cable breaks, it will also be significantly harder to fix than ethernet (which can be rejoined fairly easily). Your wireless solution may or may not work - the only way to be 100% sure is to try it. Though, the length of the network cable leading to the switch does not affect the wireless range. The weather will affect your wireless range, however, so it may not be very reliable. -- tass tass's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1231 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79322 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Multiple connections to the same stream
Hi everyone I'm looking for a bit of clarification. I was under the impression that when 2 or more squeezeboxes connect to the same radio stream (but are not synchronised) the server connects to the stream instead of the individual squeezeboxes. Is this actually the case, or does this only happen when the players are syncronised? Was curious since I noticed the second squeezebox took a few seconds to start and buffer the stream which I wouldn't have expected if the server was already connected. My router shows the same nat translations between both squeezeboxes to the same stream IP: Code: Pro Inside globalInside local Outside localOutside global tcp 118.209.xxx.84:51782 192.168.0.3:51782 192.231.203.146:8000 192.231.203.146:8000 tcp 118.209.xxx.84:42056 192.168.0.10:42056 192.231.203.146:8000 192.231.203.146:8000 -- tass tass's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1231 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79069 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I get a similar problem sometimes while playing internet radio. Granted, the server is usually very bogged down with extra work and doesn't have much RAM, but it's not the server that freezes AFAIK. Rather than pulling the power, you can hold the power button down on the remote for a few seconds until it resets. Doing this resets it and makes it go again for me. -- tass tass's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1231 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19512 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Unicode file/dir names not working
Hello, I've got a bunch of international music which I've got titled in unicode - which all works well with the Unicode fonts. My problem, however, is that the file and folder names are not browseable unless they are written in English characters. A rescan completely skips over them and browsing the music folders also skips them. As soon as i rename them (to something like 01.flac) they then appear. I'm able to play these in other software players. Is this a known issue? I couldn't find a bug report, but surely someone else would have come across the issue if it isn't just me doing something wrong... My server box is running Windows XP so it shouldn't have any issues with unicode files, or so I thought. -- tass tass's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1231 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18610 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

All this does is periodically load the slimserver web page to keep the service in memory. [slim] Annoying behaviour using LAME VBR
I've made a bunch of MP3s using LAME. I created them as VBR with quality 5 (i think) using ImToo audio converter. When I scan these into SlimServer, they show up as CBR with bitrate = 32k and a very long playtime. The thing is, even Winamp shows this same bitrate until you hit play when it works out it is VBR and shows the correct time remaining. My question is, am I using a dodgy copy of LAME?
