Re: [slim] Battery life time for Duet Controller?

2008-10-24 Thread Howard Passman

I've never run mine completely down. I do a ton of chimping
(photography term, but it may crossover) and have listened for a few
hours and not gone lower than 75% full. When I loaded SC 7.3 beta and
turned on the SBC as a player, I ran it straight, with headphones, for
2.5 hours, chimping and all and it was still at half full. When I
stopped it for just a few minutes and turned it back on, it showed 75%
full again.

I've had my DUET since they first became available so the lithium ion
batteries have been somewhat cycled many, many times. Always seems to
help.

How are you using it ? If I use it very intensively, i.e. picking it up
and playing with it every couple of minutes then I get just over 5
hours.

In my normal use I'll queue up and album or a bunch of tracks and then
put it down. Occasionally I'll pick it up to see what track is playing,
but mostly it will then sit undisturbed for 40 minutes or so. Until I
pick it up to queue up the next album/tracks.

If it only lasted 5 hours when I used it like that I would be extremely
frustrated. But using it like that, for 8-10 hours a day, it lasts a
couple of days before it needs to be charged again. In reality though
it ends up back in the charging cradle at the end of every day, not
because it needs to, it just seems like the right place for it to
live..

Re: [slim] Battery life ?

2008-10-06 Thread andynormancx

I believe the reason is something like this, when there is an access
point the AP controls when each wifi device gets sent data to it. So
the SBC can turn its wifi radio off in the periods it knows it won't be
getting data (it will be switching itself on and off many, many times a
second).

Without an AP data could arrive at any time, so the radio has to stay
on all the time.

At least that is my rough understanding of wifi infrastructure mode vs
ad hoc. I'm sure someone will correct me if I've got it all wrong...

Since the Controller is a computer, maybe it has the same issues as
laptops as to what 0% and 100% of battery really stand for. You could
try charging the battery for a very long time, then completely
depleting the battery, then charging it again completely.
A pure suggestion. My battery life is not so great, but the reading is
accurate.

This is a common problem that I've seen, particularly with people who have
had the Controller for awhile. I think some interim Controller updates may
have modified the power management settings in non-optimal ways. Maybe try
a factory reset to get back to the default values.

[slim] Battery life ?

2008-09-29 Thread Leplus

Hello,

I'm using the squeezebox duet, but if find the battery life very short.
After about 5 hours out of the cradle, and only using it a few times for
changing a radio or the volume, it's already showing red icon for
battery life. And after 8 or 9 hours I found the controller was
shutdown and showing a battery alert when restarting it.

Is it a normal behavior or the controller is supposed to always stay in
the cradle ? I normaly leave the remote in the cradle, but i was
suprised to see the short battery life when I tried not to use it.

Some informations about my configuration :

The squeezebox controller is connected with ethernet and the squeezebox
controller is connected to the Squeezebox receiver

Controller version is 7.2 r2873
SqueezeCenter version is 7.2 - 22900

Controller settings are :

Sleep Timeout 10
Suspend timeout 3600
Suspend enabled enabled
Suspend wake enabled
Wireless power save enabled

It should last a bit longer than that. I've left mine out of the cradle

Does it wake up often? If you have the screensaver set to a long

the battery faster than usual.

No, just one normal regular battery. when i was on the beta test
program we only ever got a few hours, even when it was just lying still
not being used.

After they added the power management to it it now will last a few days
out of the cradle if just lying there not being used. After an certain
time, the Wifi (the main battery drain) and screen are turned off, CPU
is also throttled down too.

Sounds to me like your Controller is not going into one of the
sleep/suspend modes - when you pick it up, you should not have to press
anything - but will see a 'please wait' screen while it wakes up and
reconnects.

If this capability ever comes to fruition, I would hope that it would
support the seamless sync/download of tracks from SqueezeCenter to the

play directly off the card with the wireless off. The ability to disable

much cheaper and simpler alternative to this, but I would not buy an iPod

Is that what you mean by 'suspend mode'? Or might the unit be
defective?

When I leave the controller out of the charger for some time, the

Mine Controller does the same and I think this is the correct behavior.

I did a sort of a test today.

The battery lasted very close to 12 hours after I tooked it out of the
cradle.
I guess I used the controller about 10-15 minutes in total over the
whole day. Max.
Did 3 or 4 wake-ups after had been not used for some time.
Did 1 firmware upgrade - r2178.

The wireless conditions are very good.

Thats all! That can't be normal?

Since updating to firmware r2178 today, my controller never goes into deep
sleep mode. Did you notice it go into this mode after updating? Could be
why it died so quickly.

I updated it just one hour or two before it died. I do not know which
mode or state it was in then. I just saw the display light up and it
said low battery and then dark, dead. Now it's in the cradle.

Re: [slim] Battery life - not good..

2008-04-09 Thread MrSinatra

Ben,

i had to reset some options after 2178, like player sleep mode, but i
also had done a factory reset.

i would recheck all the settings, (all the power ones like screen saver
etc) are not all in the same place.

also, the card idea is cool, and i agree the SBC should give you the
option to turn off parts of it, like wireless, you aren't using at the
moment...

however, i'm hoping we get at least an hour out of it as a headphone /
wireless player. (mow the grass + net radio?) i was expecting two or
three, but that now seems unlikely.

For me it's not even close to a full day, most of the time just laying
 there, and it's empty.

 Fw r2171.

If mine is lying about, I get about 4 days before needing to cradle it.
If I am picking it up and using it often, it goes 2 sometimes 2 and a
half days.

Three questions: Did you play with it when you first received it or did
you charge it for over 8 hours before using it? Do you have a strong or
weak WIFI signal? Do you make sure you hear a beep when you place it
in the cradle?

Check your controller settings and select the shortest times and see
what happens. I hear other people talking about 20 and 30-second
wake-up times. Is this a guess or actually timed? Most of the time my
SBC is up and running in 5 to 7 seconds. Once after being gone for two
days, it took about 12 seconds to wake up. I wonder if WIFI signal
strength has anything to do with the different times people are
reporting for wake up or if it just seems that long because others are
not actually timing it.

WiFi is not battery friendly. I don't try to go a full day without
setting it in the cradle. Its far too high speed and has far too long of
a transmit/receive range to cooperate with batteries.

Guess it never occurred to me to leave it on the coffee table for hours
at a time.
