Well that would be even worse because it would mess up the FLAC files
which are my lossless backup of my CDs. The 'poluuting' bit is just
because if I do file copies and whatnot I find it easier to have one
type of file only, otherwise I have to use robocopy which isn't as
simple as drag-n-drop.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll just put them in the directories.

I'm curious how it would mess up your flac files. My library is also my
lossless backup of my CDs. All have embeded cover art.

If you are worried about changing the time stamps, don't. Any decent
tagger has the optioin to retain the original time stamps of files when
altering meta data. And embedding an image isn't going to change the
audio stream in any way, so you will be able to de-compress back to the
same PCM stream with or without the image in there. If you can't then
the decoder is broken.

2009-07-16 Thread JJZolx

My library consists of over 2000 stinking, foul, polluted directories
containing not only pristine FLAC files, but cue sheets, ripping logs
and assorted album art scans. It really is a cesspool.

Do your flac files contain tags such as the artist and album name?
Embedded artwork is just another tag and, unless your covers are in the
100's of kB, it adds a negligible amount to the storage requirements for
an album.

use rsync to back up your files. That way you can have whatever you
want in the folder.

[slim] Cover Art from 'mirrored' directory tree - possible?

2009-07-15 Thread MadMan

Ok, so I have my music as .flac files organized as
\\server\music\flac\%genre\%artist\%album\%title.flac and playing music
works great. The last week I've been getting album art to display in
both Squeezecenter and my Duet controller. I don't want to 'pollute' the
FLAC music file directories (for organizational purposes) and I
definitely do not want to embed images as tags so I was hoping I could
point Squeezecenter to \\server\music\cover
art\%genre\%artist\%album\folder.jpg wihch is a fully mirrored directory
tree structure of the FLAC directory (except for 'cover art'.) But I
can't figure out a way to do this - Squeezecenter doesn't allow
variables in the cover art directory option and I don't feel like
renaming all the cover art files to %artist-%album and dumping them in
one huge folder which would be very messy. Is there a way or do I just
have to suck it up and dump the folder.jpg files in to each folder?

I'm afraid the only options available are the ones you mentioned: rename
the cover art files to %artist-%album and dumping them in one huge
folder, or rename the cver art files to folder.jpg and dump them in each
folder.

It's not a problem, it's a challenge.

Or, if your server is running linux you could get crazy and try
something like UnionFS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnionFS
