Is that so unusual? My fridge seems to be rated around 60W averaged out
- that's pretty low for a regular PC. My server is lower (~40W) but
desktops are usually more than that (although it depends greatly on
load).

Yea, it's a quad-core with 6G of RAM and 5x 1.5T disks. It runs a
number of things including Squeezecenter, some VMs, etc. Last I checked
it was using about 100-120W. I use an 80+ PSU (antec earthwatts) and
all the standard tricks to reduce the CPU frequency of things.

Re: [slim] Going green with a Transporter

2009-09-21 Thread SuperQ

Speaking of, how many kwh are people using for their homes, what % of
this goes to running music equipment.

Me and my SO use about 250kwh/month. The TP is about 2.6kwh/month
(1%).

My primary PC which I use for working from home, running squeezecenter,
etc uses about 80kwh/month (30%), but I need to re-measure this since I
did a few changes to it.

My fridge in my last apartment used about 60kwh/month (25%).

I need to go around and audit the power usage of my other stuff. I
suspect a large chunk of the power in my new apartment is lighting.
There are a number of halogen tube lights that are built-in to the walls
that I can't replace with CFL or other efficient lighting.

I do the opposite. I leave my TP on all the time and use IR-Blaster to
turn my amplifier on/off when I want to play music. The amplifier uses
a lot more power than the TP. The TP will typically use about $3-5/year
in electricity. That's about 1% of the power I use in my house.

Such a mode doesn't exist :)

The only way to switch off a SB3 or transporter is to pull the power.
Pressing the power button just tells the server what screen to show,
brightness level and to stop playing. That is all. Power consumption
should be exactly the same. it is still receiving data to update the
screen and although there will be less load on the CPU, this will make a
negligible difference to power consumption.

[slim] Going green with a Transporter

2009-09-21 Thread kevin0964

Hi, today on my SB Classic, I have the power plugged into the switched
outlet on my AV receiver, so that the squeezebox turns on when I switch
on the AV receiver.

I am replacing the SB with a transporter and want to know if doing this
might damage the transporter. If I blow my SB Classic it is not the end
of the world - but the transporter ...

Seems like this would be no different than just plugging it in every
time I wanted to use it, but am not sure if this causes any undo wear or
problems as opposed to just powering it down to sleep mode.

Thanks
