I understand now after reading here http://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/more-about-the-app-store-gpl-enforcement. (There is someone out there who actually took the time to read thru the 48 pages of T&Cs on iTunes. Nuts. Imagine you walked into a real-world store, wanted to by a CD, got to the till and before you'd be allowed to complete your purchase, the cashier insisted that you sign a copy of War&Peace - unreal.) I imagine, then, that this may also be the reason behind SqueezeCasts disappearance? (It is still here http://download.cnet.com/Squeezecast/3000-2133_4-75141363.html but I am not sure how to get it from there to the iPad.) Is the AppStore the only way to get s/w on to the iPad? Re: [slim] How to listen to music on iPad?
Well, if the slave were a stand-along piece of code, then it would not force iPeng onto GPL. But if the AppStore somehow prohibits redistribution - I have not read the 48 pages of T&Cs - then that's a bit of a deal-breaker wrt GPL. You sure about this? It would be fantastically stupid of Apple to close the door on all GPL development, present and future. I hear your reservations about stream.mp3 - I did not know that the buffering was germane to that API but I have read bad reviews about its latency, you are right. I was just thinking that the playback part of the code from SoftSqueeze may not be much use to you since I seem to remember that it is built on the Java mp3 codec, which will likely not be available to you on the iPad. Too bad. -- ovonrein ovonrein's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2130 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82702 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How to listen to music on iPad?
The problem is not selling for money. GPL doesn't prohibit that. The problem is allowing redistribution without limitations which is what the AppStore does not and also demanding that I would have to set all of iPeng under GPL. Stream.mp3 is not an option for me. There's an App out there using that and it has a two-star rating. The buffering makes it unresponsive and it will not work at all for >50% of the users - all those who can't transcode. Frankly, I don't want to spoil the user experience os iPeng customers with badly working features, iPeng is too expensive an App for that. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82702 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How to listen to music on iPad?
The GPL would allow you to distribute a playback slave for free. You may not think that this is worth your while. On the other hand, such a UI-less slave is pointless without something like iPeng. And to the extent that it is pointless, the free (GPL) app then becomes a marketing tool for/introduction to (the chargable) iPeng. I am not sure how much of the code of SoftSqueeze would port to the iPad anyway. If you can tap into stream.mp3, then it's really just the player registration part of the code. But you looked at it and I believe you when you say it isn't easy. I would just find it sad if the GPL stopped you. -- ovonrein ovonrein's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2130 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82702 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How to listen to music on iPad?
If it were easy I would have done it a long time ago. I can't borrow from SoftSqueeze since that would be a violation of the SoftSqueeze license, it's GPL which unfortunately is not compatible with the App Store agreement (and a lot of other business models; GPL is not a license, it's a dogma). You can do that for a standalone App and hope nothing happens but I can't do it with iPeng.
