I'm a little bit unsure how changing a license for a community project

The OrbMusic App - (No longer available) - did offer playback of music
on the iPad with a handy interface provided the free Orb streaming app
was installed on your PC.

I don't know if the "Orb Live" app works the same way :-(

Hopefully, iPeng will add a playback feature to the excellent "iPeng
for iPad" app soon!

I'm no license expert, but I figure you'd need to contact all of the
contributors and ask permission to add a different license. If all

It's the free choice of the author to use it.

AFAIK the author may choose to release the software under a different
(dual) license as well (perhaps a BSD license would be more appropriate
in this case). Perhaps the author(s) of Squeezeslave could be persuaded
to do the same.

Apple demands exclusivity on it's store, GPL demands you set everything

I understand now after reading here

(There is someone out there who actually took the time to read thru the
48 pages of T&Cs on iTunes. Nuts. Imagine you walked into a real-world
store, wanted to by a CD, got to the till and before you'd be allowed to
complete your purchase, the cashier insisted that you sign a copy of
War&Peace - unreal.) I imagine, then, that this may also be the reason
behind SqueezeCasts disappearance? (It is still here
http://download.cnet.com/Squeezecast/3000-2133_4-75141363.html but I am
not sure how to get it from there to the iPad.) Is the AppStore the
only way to get s/w on to the iPad? If so, this sucks. I have the
feeling that as soon as a viable alternative to the iPad comes on to
the market, that shall be the end of our iPad. I do not agree with
Apple's philosophy.

Re: [slim] How to listen to music on iPad?

Well, if the slave were a stand-along piece of code, then it would not
force iPeng onto GPL. But if the AppStore somehow prohibits
redistribution - I have not read the 48 pages of T&Cs - then that's a
bit of a deal-breaker wrt GPL. You sure about this? It would be
fantastically stupid of Apple to close the door on all GPL development,
present and future. I hear your reservations about stream.mp3 - I did
not know that the buffering was germane to that API but I have read bad
reviews about its latency, you are right. I was just thinking that the
playback part of the code from SoftSqueeze may not be much use to you
since I seem to remember that it is built on the Java mp3 codec, which
will likely not be available to you on the iPad. Too bad.

The problem is not selling for money. GPL doesn't prohibit that.
The problem is allowing redistribution without limitations which is
what the AppStore does not and also demanding that I would have to set
all of iPeng under GPL.

Stream.mp3 is not an option for me. There's an App out there using that
and it has a two-star rating. The buffering makes it unresponsive and it
will not work at all for >50% of the users - all those who can't
transcode. Frankly, I don't want to spoil the user experience os iPeng
customers with badly working features, iPeng is too expensive an App
for that.

The GPL would allow you to distribute a playback slave for free. You
may not think that this is worth your while. On the other hand, such a
UI-less slave is pointless without something like iPeng. And to the
extent that it is pointless, the free (GPL) app then becomes a
marketing tool for/introduction to (the chargable) iPeng. I am not
sure how much of the code of SoftSqueeze would port to the iPad anyway.
If you can tap into stream.mp3, then it's really just the player
registration part of the code. But you looked at it and I believe you
when you say it isn't easy. I would just find it sad if the GPL
stopped you.

If it were easy I would have done it a long time ago.
I can't borrow from SoftSqueeze since that would be a violation of the
SoftSqueeze license, it's GPL which unfortunately is not compatible
with the App Store agreement (and a lot of other business models; GPL
is not a license, it's a dogma).
You can do that for a standalone App and hope nothing happens but I
can't do it with iPeng.

I hope to have a different solution soon, though, but no guarantees
given.

In the mean time, I believe that the Nullriver Tuner Internet Radio app
will play SBS content if directed at:
http://your_SBS_ip_address:9000/stream.mp3

SBS will then see the iPad as a client to transcode to. You'll have to
use some other interface (e.g. the webUI) to construct and control the
playlist for the "client".

As soon as IOS 4.2 gets released for the iPad next month, you should be
able to use SqueezeCast as a player.

[slim] How to listen to music on iPad?

2010-10-16 Thread ovonrein

My son is keen to tap into our SBS from his iPad. I am confused about
the current state of development: iPeng is *not* a player, correct?
Only a controller (of players)? I cannot find SqueezeCast in the
AppStore - is this dead? I paid up for SqueezeMobile - it would not
work at all; got a refund. What other options do I have? (I know that
background streaming works but that's just too much hassle.)
