Find a decent used sub and the boom works fine. I use a velodyne
va907.

Until I got the Polks 2 months ago I was using a Boom in a similarly
sized area and it was okay. It depends on how loud you mean by "cover".
Because the sound dissipates so rapidly with distance outdoors the
single point location of the Boom means that to be heard at the edges
of your area it has to be a _lot_ louder near the Boom itself. In my
particular configuration I have to live with a bit too much separation
of the Polks, but the upside is that the sound level is more uniform
across the space. There's too much left channel in some places and too
much right channel in some places, but like Pablo said, outdoors is not
an ideal listening environment to begin with.

i definitely think so. outdoors is a terrible listening environment
anyhow, and neighbors typically don't appreciate adequate volume levels
for active music listening. :-)

i do think the Boom could do the job (at least for me)

Is the Boom loud enough to cover a small/medium outdoor area - say 25'
by 30'?

Re: [slim] Looking for outdoor speakers

if i had to do it all over again i'd simply use a Squeezebox Boom.

i do have a permanent setup in the back garden: a pair of Polk Atrium
55 that still look new after being out there for over 6 years. Use some
decent cable to hook them up to a cheap Sony Amp that is in an outside
cabinet, and I will connect a SB3 to the amp whenever I play music (I
don't leave the SB3 outside).

Re: [slim] Looking for outdoor speakers

2010-06-12 Thread aubuti

I've mostly heard bad things about wireless speakers in general:
susceptible to static, interference from other wireless devices like
cordless phones, baby monitors, etc. There may be good wireless
speakers out there, but there are a lot of bad ones.

I recently got a pair of passive Polk Atrium 45 speakers for my deck. I
connect them with outdoor-grade, direct-burial rated speaker cable that
runs back into my basement, where I have an AudioSource AMP100 and SBR.
Been working great so far.

[slim] Looking for outdoor speakers

2010-06-11 Thread Mike Anderson

I'm looking for outdoor speakers for my patio.

Ideally, I'm thinking of a pair of powered speakers that work
wirelessly. For example, I'd plug something into the RCA outs of my
Squeezebox and, and they'd transmit the signal to the speakers.

Does such a thing exist? If not, what's the next most elegant
solution?
