Thanks, I decided to try out Ubuntu server and it is working very well.
I was able to get LMS, CrashPlan, Subsonic and SMB sharing installed
without too much trouble.
The laptop is using about 10 watts idle and 18 watts streaming music
with LMS while backing up to CrashPlan.

you could install the Vortexbox system (it does wipe out what's on the
drive)

http://vortexbox.org/downloads

It will include LMS 7.8, squeezelite, etc. and will function as a NAS
for other files you want to store there and access from computers on
your local network.

Take a look at SME - http://contribs.org - it will run SBS (or at least
it did when I last tried it) but have no knowledge of Crashplan.

Interesting: I've been running LMS on SME for a decade or more. But I've
built my own perl, as the installed 5.8.x is rather dated and IIRC
caused some problems with certain features.

Not strictly true. You could add a OS partition on a disk with spare
space and keep the disks as is. The OS can then access existing data
partitions (and the existing os partition). I guess they are likely to
be one of NTFS, FAT or ext, which are widely supported in Ubuntu or
other OS. Unless the NAS gave them some strange format?

What about plain Ubuntu server (or Ubuntu desktop with the gui). Ubuntu
seems to have pretty wide hardware support so I guess it is most likely
to work on your old laptop.

Don't know crashplan but Ubuntu is quite popular so if it has something
for Linux it will most likely work on Ubuntu?

[slim] NAS/SBS software for old x86 laptop?

2014-06-09 Thread DrewSB

Hi all,
I've been running a NAS / SBS on a Sheevaplug until recently when the SD
card died. I also have an older Core Solo x86 laptop with 2GB of RAM. I
was thinking of turning that into a NAS as it has a lot of advantages
over the Sheevaplug, not the least being the convenience of a built-in
keyboard and monitor for maintenance. My storage are two USB hard drives
formatted as NTFS, a 2TB and a 3TB.

My goals are:
1. NAS functions to back up files from my desktop and stream media to
XBMC. Straight SMB shares work for this, no need for UPNP, etc.
Hopefully support for NTFS.
2. SBS for a modest library.
3. Ideally a Crashplan client to back up my backups.
4. Low-ish power, the server will be idle 9/10ths of the time so it
would be nice if it could spin down the drives.

I looked into FreeNAS but it doesn't support my disks without
reformatting and seems to require a lot of tinkering to get SBS or
Crashplan to work. I could also just go with Windows 8 but I'd need to
buy a license and it may be overkill.

Any other thoughts on reusing an old laptop as a server?

Thanks,
-Drew
