I made my Now Playing screen for the controller; its tiny screen is not suited to show a libretto on, IMHO. Are you using the built-in lyrics view? There are some plug-ins around, that may work better for you. I have no experience with them myself, though. The interpretation from Perahia is indeed superb. But also the recording is excellent. Very natural sounding piano. Re: [slim] Now Playing screen for classical music
Co1 It's good to see the Composer and other tags being used, and I will make use of this - it has my vote. However, I'm only on 7.5.1 and I'll not get to 7.6 until it becomes official. The thing that really bugs me for classical music displays is the lyrics tag. I loaded all the CD booklet information into the Lyrics tag - this includes opera libretti. Now yes, you can see the Lyrics tag in the LH column of SqueezeCenter player page, but only as a part-column window; on a small screen (such as an eeePC) all you get is a miserly three lines. Above that is the (useless) cover display and information that can be seen on the RH column anyway. In days of yore, the lyrics tag display could be a larger proportion of the left hand column. Bring in a full column display of the lyrics column! (By the way: I approve your choice of the Perahia Beethoven sonatas - a superb CD!) -- Cape11 Cape11's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13763 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82062 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Now Playing screen for classical music
I like the idea and congratulate you on it. Only problem is, I don't think I can stand the idea of re-tagging all my music for the third time! I currently use the composer tag, artist tag, in which I put everything (orchestra, conductor, individual artists, choir), album (which I preface with composers name) and title (usually movement). It is not such an elegant solution as yours but thanks to scrolling, all the information gets displayed on the now playing screen. I also find it useful to have orchestra, conductor etc in the artist tag when searching. It's all very much a case of using 'what works for you'. If I was starting from the beginning I would certainly consider your solution. -- JerryS JerryS's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=38998 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82062 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Now Playing screen for classical music
Yes, in your case it would only show the composer separately, whom you already have in the album title. Unless you have followed the composer name by a unique separator character, it will be a lot of work to re-tag everything. I was not that happy with the three lines of information from the beginning, so I used tags as atomic as possible; I have COMPOSER, WORK, MOVEMENT, OPUS, COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR, BAND, and ARTIST. I could have split up the artists further, e.g. giving each a solo instrument, etc., but I am too lazy for that. Until I made the new screen, I composed the TITLE and ALBUM from those ingredients, using MP3tag. -- Co1 Co1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34002 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82062 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

How difficult would it be to modify your screen to support that ? PERFORMER and OPUS isn't supported by standard SBS as far as I know, I think you need the Custom Scan plugin to scan those. With Custom Scan you can configure these to be available as a title format. If you also install the Custom Clock Helper plugin you can configure it to forward customclock/titleformatsupdated events to the Controller. To use these events you will need to subscribe on them, I'm not sure if that's possible in the Now Playing screen but if you like to give it a try you can take a look at the Custom Clock applet code, you will find a section that looks like this that sets up the subscription: Code: player:subscribe( '/slim/customclock/titleformatsupdated', function(chunk) if not chunk.data[1] or chunk.data[1] ~= customclock or not chunk.data[2] or chunk.data[2] ~= titleformatsupdated then return end local player = appletManager:callService(getCurrentPlayer) if player then self:_updateCustomTitleFormatInfo(player) end end, player:getId(), {'customclock','titleformatsupdated'} ) In the same way, you can look in the _updateCustomTitleFormatInfo function of the Custom Clock applet code if you like to see how to use the 'customclock titleformats' command to get the values of the configured title formats, for example those provided by Custom Scan plugin. The Custom Clock applet code can be found here: http://erlandplugins.googlecode.com/svn/CustomClock/trunk/src/ Of course, if you just want a user defined Now Playing screen, you can also design own without any programming at all using Custom Clock and Custom Clock Helper. How difficult would it be to modify your screen to support that ? You must be using Custom Tags (like I do). I have not figured out a way to get those data from the server to the Now Playing applet on the controller. So I worked with what data fields are available in Squeezeboxserver without 3rd party plugins. Do you see Performers in the current Now Playing screen? I know they can be shown in the browse menus. But those would look the same if you would copy all Artist tags to Composer, Performer tags to Artist, and change the mapping of tag names to names shown to the user in the Mixed Tags settings. Another way to look at this is to merely consider the Squeezeboxserver Artist and Composer fields as internal (and confusing) representations of the Performer and Artist FLAC tags. But anyway, I'd love to find a way to show Custom tags in the Now Playing screen of the Controller. Re: [slim] Now Playing screen for classical music
The new screen is an extra NP view. You can cycle through the available NP screens on the controller by rotating the wheel half a turn. I was so nasty to make the classical NP screen the default, but that might be changed. (I seem to belong to a minority group with my taste for classical music). In vs 7.6 one can select which NP views will be shown. Even on the classical music NP screen, pop music does not look too bad. The top row on the screen will be empty. I have attached an example. Posting the patches on your repository is great. I do not know how many more I will build. Please bear in mind that also the server needs a patch. It is kind of strange that the metadata for conductor etc. is retrieved, but not passed on to the controller. BTW, I have a custom tag OPUS, which I would like to add to the album title in the NP screen. [slim] Now Playing screen for classical music
I have modified the Now Playing screen for the Controller, so that it becomes more useful for classical music. The current two lines of text are in a lot cases not enough to show all relevant information. I have filed a bug http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16561 , with the needed patches attached. The patches are for 7.6.0, both on the server and on Squeezeplay. To use the Now Playing screen with classical music, the COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR, and BAND tags are used. The various ARTIST tags should be used for soloists. The ALBUM tag is used to show the Work, but can also be used for a collection of short pieces. Then the piece, and movement should be tagged in the TITLE tag. The patches are for the Controller only, but it should be fairly easy to make similar modifications for the other Squeezeplay based devices. Please vote for this bug, if you want this implemented. How does normal pop/rock music look like after the patch has been applied ? If you like to make it easy for people to install the patch, you might want to consider making it available through the Patch Installer applet: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Patch_Installer_applet If you like me to offer it through my repository instead of having your own, just let me know and I'll add it to my repository file under your nickname. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland).
