[slim] Re: Briefly show now playing, song info when song is changed.

2006-07-16 Thread wiped

Thank you for all the answers.

Regarding implementing and solving this i thought i would share some
ideas. I'm not a programmer etc so if anything sounds strange sorry for
that.

Regarding briefly showing the track info at song change, i believe
there are a few implementations.

First of all:

Requirement: Possibillity to trigger an action at song change, either
by computing the time of the track and trigger the action at song end
or if there exist any function to trigger an action/event at song
change.. Trigger it based on the current song's lenght might be good
(see below step 3)

Step (1) In a first implementation i would just like to see a checkbox
in the player setting next to where you set the screen savers, which
basically says Show now playing screensaver at song change.
The timeout (time to show song info) could be based on the already set
timeout for screensaver.

Step (2)

To furhter develop this, for me the next step would be to add the
possibillity to specify the time to show the track (independent of the
screensaver timeout and also the possibillity to chose any of the
screensavers to show).
This would be done by just adding another listbox in the screensavers
which is for Show at song change.
Also adding a timout entry below that for Time to show screensaver at
song change

Step (3)
The final step i for this would be the possibillity to show the playing
songs info at the end of it and the beginning of next song (kind of like
watching an MTV video where they display the song info at the beginning
and end.
Then another time entry field should be added that basically says Time
before song end to show screensaver
The already added entry box for the screensaver would say
Time to show screensaver at song change
I guess this could be done by knowing the song lenght and then based on
what is entered in the Time before song end to show screensaver set a
time for showing the song info.

As i wrote above this would require some way ot knowing the song change
and for the later part knowing when there are e.g. 10 seconds left of a
song.

Regarding the spectrum analyzer and the text shown.
Since it's today unreadable if you aren't very close to the player an
option somewhere to set the text size would be excellent.

i am curious tho, why do some have many comments, but nearly no votes?
and how many votes are needed to get attention on optional things like
these?

Because people don't vote.

Or because some people prefer fixing an open issue instead of adding new
stuff? Sometimes those comments are used to collect data about an error,
discuss possible solutions etc.

And you can attach patches which might add/fix something. So feel free to
add the changes needed to implement your feature ;-)

if i may add to this...

i would like to be able to set which screen savers it would show and
then have it rotate them, by song or by time, or by # of songs, etc...

just something to automate some variety.

Because people don't vote. It would be nice if a vote could be placed
on the comment page in Bugzilla - I think you'd see a lot more voting.

No fixed number. I think it's fair to say the requests with a higher
number of votes do get noticed, but it takes months and a couple dozen
threads like this imploring people to vote for features that they seem
so adamant about. Even then, it's up to the discretion of the
developers, the development roadmap, the complexity of a solution, and
whether there's a 'consensus' (if there can ever be one) on an
implementation.

probably due to people who are not familiar with Bugzilla, don't
notice teh voting system or feel that a comment is enough to make
their voice heard.

attention is automatic. There are reviews all the time: bug-parties.
If you happen to be cc'd on a large number (like I am), you see huge
numbers of updates every so often on large blocks of reports.

Having said that, the only way to guarantee an optional feature is to
write it yourself (I know, nasty thing to say, but it's true). Other
possiblities (in no particular order) are to have someone who writes a
similar plugin add it to theirs. Also, oping for someone to come along
who is inspired to make a patch or plugin for a given feature request,
and then finally hoping that the direction of slimserver fits with the
request. Of course, more votes can help influence any one of those.
