I think you'll find that the issue is distribution; SDKs and cartridges
are closely controlled by Nintendo and very, very expensive as a rule.
SDKs for consoles can be 6 figure sums for example. Until there's open
source kits, you might as well forget a native DS app, which is why
using Java or Symbian on a WIFi equipped phone might be the better
option.

I concur. But I would have to take away my Boy's DS. God knows what he
would do to my slimserver.

But you have to buy him the new slimmer DS anyway, so you'll have a
spare

My current favourite is the upcoming Nokia 6136 that is Wifi equipped.
Now if we can get at the Wifi through Java, how about a cellphone
remote?

I wonder how hard it is to write a native DS app? It's already got the
wifi support. The browser method would be easier obviously, but it
would have all the usual browser problems.

With a native app, you could have the now playing info in the top
screen, and the navigation in the bottom touch screen. While building a
playlist, the playlist would go in the top, and the library in the
bottom. Map the arrow keys to navigate the list, use the buttons for
volume, etc. That would be so sweet.
