[slim] Re: How to access folder on another computer?

2005-11-13 Thread sheridan

Has this been resolved. I use a laptop sharing my desktop's music folder
and it works fine.
Of course you have to allow SlimServer to log on to your other
computer.
Control Panel...
Administrative tools...
Services...
Scroll down to SlimServer and double-click it.
Click the Log on tab
and enter a login name and password that is valid on the other PC. (By
the way, the other machine MUST have a password login, if you don't
enter a password you won't be able to share the folder properly).

I'm not sure SlimServer can access regular network share
names/shortcuts. I believe you can instead map a network share as a
drive letter and then tell SlimServer that drive letter. You can map
drive letters in Windows Explorer via the tools menu.

[slim] Re: How to access folder on another computer?

2005-10-20 Thread mkosma

Given that you have a drive c I assume you're not using a mac or linux
...

There are a few ways to do it. First, you have to make sure you can
access the Upstairs c:\music directory from windows explorer on the
remote downstairs computer, without regard to slimserver. If windows
cannot see it, then most likely neither can slimserver.

Assume your computers are named Upstairs and Downstairs.

If you have enabled file sharing on both Upstairs and Downstairs (and
presumably you were careful enough not to open that capability to the
outside world), you need to make sure the Upstairs c:\music directory
is shared. Open windows explorer on Upstairs, right click on the
c:\music folder, select Sharing, and create a share (called, e.g.,
Music).

Then, you need to try to access the share from Downstairs. One way is
to try to open the directory \\Upstairs\Music in windows explorer or a
command prompt. If you see your music files, you're done - you should
be able to put \\Upstairs\Music in the music folder box.

Other possibility is to map a drive. You can do that in windows
explorer, using Tools menu, Map Network Drive. Map M: let's say to
\\Upstairs\Music. Then, you simply put M:\ in the slimserver music
folder box.

You'll have to designate it using a network share and a UNC name, not
an IP address. Something like:

\\DownstairsComputer\Music

You'll first need to set up a share on the downstairs computer. Name
it whatever you like (Music is always a good one) and then make sure
you give the share the necessary permissions.

Thanks guys. //upstairs/music didn't work so I'll try the mapped drive
option.

I'm not sure what you're saying here.

[slim] Re: How to access folder on another computer?

2005-10-20 Thread jermmd

here's the easiest way to do it. Credit to Johnwb and Johnnylighton at
Audiocircle.com.
You need to have slimserver running on one of the computers. Typically
I think you'd run it on the computer where the music is stored. Then
from the other computer you would just enter the following URL:

http://localhost:9000/

Where you would replace localhost with the IP address for the
computer running the SlimServer software. (ex:
http://192.168.0.1:9000/)

I do think jonwb's suggestion is probably the best route: load
SlimServer on the upstairs computer, have SlimServer scan the library
on your upstairs computer, let your SB find the upstairs computer, and
if you want to use the downstairs computer to control SlimServer as
well as using your SB, simply point your web browser to the address of
the SlimServer
