I'm sure that if you or someone else were to code up working UPnP server support in slimserver, the patch would be happily accepted. The point is that you shouldn't hold your breath waiting for Slim Devices to fund development of UPnP support, because doing so doesn't sell them more Squeezeboxes. - Marc ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

What would help them sell more SqueezeBoxes would be to add support for UPnP in the firmware. You're changing the subject. You were talking about UPnP, and the fact that this feature would not help them sell more Squeezeboxes. I just gave my opinion which is that UPnP would be more useful as a client in the Squeezebox firmware. The OP is talking about a UPnP _server_ integrated into Slimserver. As I had been playing with a Roku SoundBridge, a SqueezeBox, mt-daap, SlimServer and Gmediaserver, and was disappointed with the Squeezebox only supporting SlimServer instead of being UPnP compatible. Apart from that, it is my favourite network player (best sound, best design, best user interface, supports WPA). But as the server of my network audio player must fit in less than 800kb (my embedded system, a SOHO, has 6Mb of flash and is running Linux), I cannot use SlimServer as it is too big and uses Perl. So I'm using gmediaserver (it takes less than 300kb, is coded in C, and supports UPnP), so I can use the Roku Soundbridge (but gmediaserver also supports NETGEAR Wireless Digital Music Player, Linksys Wireless-B Music System, Philips Streamium, D-Link DSM-520, Terratec NOXON audio, Pinnacle ShowCenter... as they are all UPnP compatible). What you're talking about is a UPnP _client_ in squeezebox firmware Exactly. which is a completely different feature, and a lot less likely to ever happen, I think. It is also about UPnP, and a lot more useful IMHO. --Raphael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Given that SlimDevices only make money when you buy their hardware (the software is free), they have little economic incentive to make the software UPnP compatible. Have you looked at Telcanto as a solution for controling your system? I use it with a library of 1,000 albums and a multi-room setup (6 rooms), and also use it to access AlienBBC. -- netim3 netim3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=219 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30089 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You install the Philips media server on your PC and you can stream audio to the actual remote for playback. It has a headphone socket for use as a portable audio device. There's nothing to stop you installing this software and pointing it at the same music directory as your Slim box is configured to use. Don't know how great the streaming would be over it's 802.11B wireless adapter. My PSP struggles to stream using it's 802.11B adapter. It isn't able to stream 224Kb VBR MP3's without break ups. I'm not sure if it has web browsing functionality to mimic what people are using the Nokia 770 for. It is true that you can stream music with the Phillips RC9800, but the quality is quite poor ! What I want is to be able to control the SlimServer and see music folders which you can do with the phillips server software. So it seem like if the SlimServer where uPnP compliant the same would be possible with SlimServer. -- GungHo GungHo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8696 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30089 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
