[slim] Slimserver, Slimcenter, Duet, Jive - I'm confused!
I'm a regular vistor to this forum and I seem to have lost my way with all of the recent developments. Can someone lay out where we are now compared to, say, 6 months ago? What I mean is I'm trying to understand how the new developments relate to each other. I followed the Jive developements - then Duet was announced, which I thought was a new name for Jive - but maybe it isn't? I also see terms like SC, slimsqueezer, slim center, etc. and I'm confused. I'm guessing others might be, too. Thanks. -- Rick B. Re: [slim] Slimserver, Slimcenter, Duet, Jive - I'm confused!
SqueezeCenter (SC) is the new name for SlimServer (SS) from version 7.0 onwards. Sqeezebox Controller is the new remote control based on the Jive software platform which has been in discussion for some time. Squeezebox Receiver is the new screen-less Squeezebox. Duet is a bundle package including one Controller and one Receiver. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41978 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You'll also see SBC (Squeezebox Controller) and SBR (Squeezebox Receiver) used here and there. Maybe the Jive forum should be renamed the Controller or Duet forum to avoid some confusion. -- Skunk http://www.last.fm/user/TheSkunk/ Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41978 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for the replies - very helpful. One question - Is there a separate Jive Remote under development that is still forthcoming or is it in fact already here as the Squeezebox Controller? -- Rick B. It's the same one that's been talked about in the forum for some time, but it is likely not the only controller in the roadmap. Those of us on the outside can only guess on hardware. -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

So the new product names are: SqueezeCenter 7 (aka SC7, formerly SlimServer) SqueezeNetwork (aka SN) Squeezebox Controller (aka SBC, formerly Jive Remote) Squeezebox Receiver (aka SBR, formerly Ray) SqueezeNetwork (aka SN) SqueezeOS (formerly Jive software) Squeezebox (aka SB3 aka Squeezebox Classic aka Squeezebox v3 ) Transporter (aka TR) ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

gerph;256491 Wrote: Um... Maybe I'm missing something, but... it's not an OS. The OS is Linux and it's just an application on top of that. Depends on how you define OS. The kernel is Linux. The OS is often more than the kernel (hence why the FSF says it is GNU/Linux since things like gcc, libc, bash, cat, passwd, etc are FSF projects). If the OS includes the presentation layer, ie, the UI (Microsoft certainly argues this as part of why IE is part of the OS), then it would be fair to call it SqueezeOS. Defining OS is part of the problem... I certainly don't believe it is just the kernel. That has never been true, be it CP/M or TOPS-10, the kernel is just part of the OS... and if the os includes commmand line stuff like cat and ls, then why wouldn't a GUI be included as part of the OS as well when it is provided. (It may be an optional part on most Unix systems, but it is a mandatory component on Windows.) -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41978 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
