Re: [slim] So will there be any new products with Digital Outs.....
You can do this pretty much with any small form factor pc. You could slap together a small silent PC with rapsberry pi with digital audio out via USB sound for probably $100. You could run linux and squeezeslave/squeezeplay on it and then you have a squeezebox with all the regular offline music capabilities. No screen, but you could run it to your TV and that should give you a nice big screen. Use an app on your phone for a remote though. lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96205 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Ideally, you would want a SqueezePlay port for the VortexBox to make sure everything is properly supported. Bonus points if you can use the VortexBox itself as a controller. Jean There are several of us using Vortexbox with squeezeplay installed and this does include all the above features, except for the controller, i.e. like a screenless touch. The Vortexbox is normally run headless (without a screen) so you can use anything with a browser or Ipad touch etc. It may be possible to get it working with a touchscreen attached, but I am not going to worry about that. Andrew is talking about the Vortexbox player which gives you hires, but not gapless, no syncing and no spotify. I have also tried softsqueeze install which does all bar hires. There are instructions for installing squeezeplay over at vortexbog.org forum; although there is no out of the box installyet Personally I think one of the reasons why Logitech is letting the touch go is because squeezeplay is the tweakers player. The touch is just a hardware implementation of it, and I bet they don't make much per unit. foxesden's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96205 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Will there really be nothing to take the place of a SB with a digital out and optical/coax inputs? good question Squeezebox's audio out is not audiophile quality, hence products like the SB+ [third party] and Transporter Makes no sense to have a network player without capability to hook into a DAC. cliffpatte's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57024 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96205 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I actually think that for audiophile playback this is the way to go. We should leave the audio engineering to an external usb based dac and keep the streamer to a low power linux platform which runs squeezeplay (or cut down version of it or something similar...) This with LMS + a separate control app would keep the power of LMS + the audiophile capabilities of high bitrate and external dac support. As we see with Sonos - other streamers don't put the effort into crystal dual clocks for driving spdif outs at low jitter for all audio rate - this requires dedicated hardware. We should perhaps leave this to the dac manufactures and just looks to a streamer which has a usbout. As you well know the fun part is getting the small embedded linux with the proper ALSA so it can properly run UAC2 async DACs. Fortunately Time itself will tend to fix that. John S.
