Re: [slim] Sticky Surface on Remote Controls And The Rear Of A Touch
Try using Denatured Alcohol. It works better than Isopropyl. I had a Harmony remote that began to get sticky and Denatured worked much better. Re: [slim] Sticky Surface on Remote Controls And The Rear Of A Touch
Hi Thanks for all the replies. I can say that some of the items I have, that have gone "sticky" are not touched on a daily basis. Yes it is probably the product material used, starting to break down. The worst part of all of this is that the stickiness attracts dust, hair or whatever, that is floating around in everyones home. It's the buildup of these items, that actually alerts you to what has happened. Yes I have the hard shell type remotes as well, its just a couple of the remotes that have become sticky. I, in fact, usually control my Touch using Muso, which means I don't even touch the Touch at all. I also use Squeezer, installed on an android tablet and an android mobile phone, so yes I have alternatives to actually using the remotes. I also have JRiver on a computer that can also control devices. It's just annoying that such quality items, no matter the make, all seem to be suffering this problem and generally no one has come up with a solution. In fact, it doesn't seem to get publicity either. We all seem to have our own remedies, that work in each case. Manufacturers don't normally offer advice on the subject. Once again, thanks for all the response. I will keep using Isopropyl Alcohol until I can find a definitive alternative. sachadog's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10564 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Agreed. It's rubber-coated things that get sticky. My 14-year old SB2 is now very sticky, but since I never touch it I've left it alone. It's nothing to do with use. A quick Google suggests that it's due to the vulcanisation of the rubber breaking down, so the rubber starts turning back into its raw sticky state. It's not just Squeezeboxes that are affected - anything with that "soft-feel" rubber coating has the same problem. My Atomic ski helmet got sticky and it took a long time and a lot of effort with isopropyl alcohol to remove the coating. Do the remotes get sticky over time or sticky from increased use? My Transporter remote isn't in the least bit sticky but I rarely use it. HG Sticker remover is an "goo be Gone" equivalent - and removes the stickiness very easily no elbow grease - however it also removes the text (e.g. numbers, sleep) on the remote. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I can confirm that isopropyl alcohol does eventually remove the sticky rubber coating, but it takes a lot of effort and you need to keep at it. Persevere on a small section to start with to get an idea of how much elbow grease is required. I checked my Touch - while most of the back is glossy plastic and is not sticky, at the bottom the small labelled separate section where the cable/connectors go is sticky. Not sure if you clean it whether the labelling will also go. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Sticky Surface on Remote Controls And The Rear Of A Touch
Hi, Thank you for your replies. The Touch isn't "dirty" from use, as it has stood in a purpose made HiFi stand and the rear has only been touched to connect the cables. It only became apparent when I had to adjust my HiFi setup. I use the touch with a remote as much as possible, or I use my tablet or phone as remotes, because the Squeezebox remote is so sticky. The front of the Touch is still perfect, as far as I can tell. I haven't heard of Goo Be Gone, I will follow that up. Yes I have other "plastic" or man-made items that after a few years of ownership have shown this problem. It's not confined to Squeezebox items. Other manufacturing products have also shown this breakdown. I owned headphones made by a very well known American company. They were noise cancelling. Those headphones actually "melted" with the over the head "protein leather" becoming almost liquid and the ear cups, on the surface were in order, but where they attached to the earphone speaker housing, had almost liquified and the substance had run onto and into the small speakers, which couldn't be removed. I contacted the manufactureres, who weren't that interested. They informed me I couldn't replace the over-the-head section; the ear cups were replaceable, but of course the "liquid" had affected the sound output, making the earphones almost unusable. I had to dispose of them. I would point out, I had moved house at the time. The headphones were stored in their correct carrying case for a period of two months. It was during this time, the breakdown became apparent, when I went to use them again. I have a feeling that as time passes, more and more items that have man-made finishes; i.e. plastics or "protein leather" will break down, making perfectly good items, unusable. sachadog's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10564 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Sticky Surface on Remote Controls And The Rear Of A Touch
I had no luck with alcohol. So I resorted to a couple of rounds of Goo Be Gone followed be cleaning that with Dawn and water. It helped a fair amount, but there is some tackiness remaining. This is a common problem with a lot of natural rubber over-moldings. Cleaning with Isopropyl alcohol usually does the trick, although it make take a few rounds of cleaning. Re: [slim] Sticky Surface on Remote Controls And The Rear Of A Touch
Some of my remotes have the same issue and it is the same as one of my Booms. It was a surface treatment which over time breaks down. It the same on a iPAL radio I have. The rear of my Touch is plain hard shiny plastic - no surface treatment. I suspect your Touch issue may just be "dirt". Since rear is single part casing - check surface between rubber feet on bottom (it is likely to be in near-new condition & clean) to see if it is shiny/glossy - if it is shiny/glossy - then carefully try some other domestic plastic cleaner. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Sticky Surface on Remote Controls And The Rear Of A Touch
I haven't experienced this with the remotes, but it's a common problem with the front panel and knob on the Boom. I've had some success over-painting those parts with a matt lacquer rubber paint, so if you can dismantle the remotes sufficiently to isolate the sticky part it might be worth a go. [slim] Sticky Surface on Remote Controls And The Rear Of A Touch
Hi, I am looking for some inspiration here. I have several Squeezbox Classics and a Touch and a Duet. I have a collection of remotes to go with them. Those remotes, universally, now have a sticky surface around the keys. I have tried isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) without much success in removing the sticky surface. There appears to be a complete breakdown in the suface of the remotes, in fact you can almost scrape the surface off with finger nails. Yes, I know I can use my mobile phone, or Muso, or Squeezer, or Orange Squeeze dependant on what I use to control the system, but it's a shame the actual remotes are now becoming so sticky as to make them almost useless. Has anyone else had this problem and found a way of curing the stickiness and of course the debris it attracts. I have also noted the rear of the Touch is going the same way. Any suggestion would be of assistance, otherwise I will have to dispose of the remotes, that actually still work, but are awful to use. The Touch is still in daily use and hopefully will stay that way! sachadog's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10564 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
