Re: [slim] Wadia 170 iTransport vs Slimdevices Transporter - initial impressions

2008-08-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Transporter is used in digital out mode. The Tact digital amps are
in fact DAC's as the signal remains digital until outputting to
speakers.
The Slimdevices products are, IMO, easier to use in terms of seeing
what tracks are playing, managing playlists etc.
The advantage of the Wadia is that one does not have to be connected to
a computer or network in order to play music. Sonically I did not find
any advantage to the Wadia and, as stated in my initial post, I prefer
the sound of the Transporter to that of the Wadia.
I will again compare the units after running the Wadia for a week.

2008-08-27 Thread BigTony

Sorry, I was confused. I assume that the Transporter in Digital out mode
will sound the same as the SB3, except you'll have support for 24/96
FLAC etc.
If there both using the same DAC there will be no sound difference, all
they are doing is sending the same digital data to the DAC.
The Wadia seems an expensive way to get Digital out from an IPod.

Jose, I would get an admin to change your user name, or that email
address will be spam-tastic before very long.

So what advantage over an SB3 does the Wadia have? They both deliver
digital to your DAC.
Do you connect your Transporter to an offboard DAC too or use the
built-in?

Wave and Apple lossless only. I listened to both types and did not hear
any significant differences.

The Wadia is just the transport, what DAC are you using?
I can't help but think its really just a gimik, and not a cheap one at
that.

I have an all-digital system with Tact RCS 2.2XP and Tact digital amps.
No other DAC involved

[slim] Wadia 170 iTransport vs Slimdevices Transporter - initial impressions

2008-08-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I receivd my dock yesterday and have run it in for 24 hours. Setup was
easy and it works well with my 160G iPod Classic. I am obviously using
the digital out. Cable is different type to that used in the
Transporter. Both connected to PS Audio PPP.
Sound at this stage is pretty good and more than acceptable. Directly
comparing it to the Transporter shows the Wadia to be less smooth, bit
more grain, most noticeable in mids and lower treble. Bass is similar.
Has slightly less ambience than Transporter.
Usability is poor in comparison. Wadia is far from me and obvioulsy
display is not readable. Remote can only change tracks, pause etc.
One needs to go up to the iPod and change albums etc. Transporter has
great display and very complete remote. Duet is even better in this
repect.

The unit may improve with some running in but I doubt it will be
replacing my Transporter for serious listening. Advantage is that I
can select a playlist and use it fo general listening without powering
up my laptop etc.

For those thinking of getting one, I would suggest looking at the Duet
first which should be similar to the Transporter wrt digital output.

Regards

Jose
