Many DVD-A discs have a hi-res stereo mix as well as 5.1 surround mix which can be extracted directly to WAV (though obviously lose benefit of surround mixes...!!) -- ntom SB3,Perpetual Technologies P1-A/P3-A,Naim82 + 4xNaim135, Martin Logan SL3 ntom's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3197 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43025 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] can SB do lossless FLAC 5.1?
OK... I've done it!! An 'un-named' user sent me the link to rip MLP DVD-As as WAV files. The way it actually works is to pull a LF/RF/LS/RS (Quad) file and separate C/LFE file. The files are ripped on a Apple MacBook Pro using Parallels (running Windows as a separate app) since the ripping app is Windows based. I import these files into ProTools (Mac), which 'un-wraps' them into individual 96k/24bit mono files. I then encode them all as a 96k DTS encoded WAV file and VIOLA!!! It plays and can, certainly, be encoded lossless as FLAC to save bandwidth. Anyhow... IT WORKS!! -- Eric Seaberg Eric Seaberg - San Diego - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Eric Seaberg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7896 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43025 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'd love to know HOW you're ripping MLP audio from DVD-A? Maybe we could work out a 'trade' where I'll encode your WAV files to DTS if you rip some of my DVD-A that don't have a Dolby/DTS playlist on them. Re: [slim] can SB do lossless FLAC 5.1?
I've started trying to rip audio from a few DVD-A discs that I have. Seem to have managed to rip the 24/96 stereo mix OK. Also ripped the 24/96 5.1 mix OK. The stereo mixs streams to my SB3 OK. The 5.1 mix doesn't -guess no surprise. Just wont play -thought maybe i could pass SPDIF to a surround amp but even if it had played I guess would have been no good as not DT or DD. I think Pat's referring to post-CD digital formats such as SACD and DVD-A. If I understand correctly, Sony mandated that no consumer SACD player would output an unencrypted digital signal. And DVD-A defines a down-sampled unencrypted digital output. All ways the industry attempts to keep the digital information locked up on the disc and give you access to only an analog output. The average consumer seems quite content to live with analog interconnection. Since consumers, by and large, aren't asking for it, and the industry doesn't seem to want it anyway, I think the motivations are AGAINST developing and/or deploying multichannel digital interconnection. HDMI *may* continue to gain ground, not because it's digital, but because it eliminates to rats-nest of analog cables. So far as DRM, the only legitimate thorn in the industry's side is consumer's desires to rip content for their iPods. Apple has so far been somewhat successful at putting their fingers in the DRM dike with the tight integration of the ITMS, so DRM concerns are handled automagically. But market forces, such as Amazon's non-DRM MP3's, Micrsoft turning off the plays for sure authorization servers, and the number of people who have non-Apple MP3 players are starting to breach the industry's DRM dike. However, I'll be surprised if this has any effect on multichannel and/or HiRes DRM anytime soon... -- Timothy Stockman Timothy Stockman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8867 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43025 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Timothy Stockman wrote: I think Pat's referring to post-CD digital formats such as SACD and DVD-A. Right, red book was invented before computers. At least it sure seems like that, they could have trivially added stuff to make it far better, but it was a major improvement when direct Digital Audio Extraction became possible. If I understand correctly, Sony mandated that no consumer SACD player would output an unencrypted digital signal. And DVD-A defines a down-sampled unencrypted digital output. All ways the industry attempts to keep the digital information locked up on the disc and give you access to only an analog output. Of course, they failed. There was always the analog loophole where all you need is a six channel PCM audio card running at 88.2 or 96 kHz to make digital copies that are indistingishable from the original. Assuming of course, that the SACD or DVD-A actually had something other than Red Book audio on them in the first place. The average consumer seems quite content to live with analog interconnection. Sadly the average consumer has no clue what audio quality is. I think a more fundamental problem with multi-channel for audio (separate from movie soundracks) is that there is no standard mix, so even if you could get 5 audiophile speakers in the room (talk about zero WAF) you don't and can't know where to place them. If I had been king of audio, I'd have said the standard is two big front speakers, a subwoofer and two (or three) spacial ambience speaker. The spacial speakers do not have to be full range. -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I am naive in this arena, but wouldn't HDMI solve this problem without trying to build a new standard? Granted, current-gen Logitech devices wouldn't support it but in the future it seems like HDMI would be the easiest way to build multichannel audio support into a device like this. [slim] can SB do lossless FLAC 5.1?
Hello Forum, after having ripped all my Redbook CD, I am only left with a stack of SACD (and DVD-A). Now, some labels provide 24/48 highres 5.1 FLAC and WAV classical music for download. So that would be the way to go to also be able to use the SB for SACD quality music. The problem is that the downloaded sample from the website blows the SB, it hangs with ran out of decoder memory and has to be hard reset. My question is: is the SB SUPPOSED to process this stream (DTS works fine on my system). Also WAV of the same music does not work, it does not hang the system, but simply loops over the first 5 or so seconds. No sound coming out. Any idea?
