Re: [slim] m4a/aac =white noise, getting mad!!!!

2008-03-31 Thread bpa

It is unlikely Perian is causing any problem as it should just use QT
libraries and not modify them.

I think you m4a and Flac problems are separate. Given the difficulty
in getting faad for OSX - I'll try to locate mplayer and give what I
think are the installation steps (I don't have Mac so I will be
guessing).

First - need to sort out Flac problem as it could affect solving m4a
playback.

1. Are any of the WAV, Apples Lossles(Alac), Apple AAC or Move file and
Flac entries in Setting/Advanced/Filetypes "disabled" - if so which
ones ?

2. Make sure the WAV, Alac and Flac in Setting/Advanced/Filetypes are
all "enabled" . For each of WAV, Apple Lossless and Flac - there are 3
drop down boxes. Make sure each box is not showing "disabled".

3. Click Apply and check that there are no "disabled" entries. If
there are any "disabled" entries please note them in a post.

4. Trying playing a Flac file.

5. If Flac does not play and no "disabled" entries. Goto
Setting/Advanced/Logging and set player.source to Debug. Click Apply.
Open log window by clicking on link at top of logging page.

6. Try playing Flac file again - if it fails - copy log entries to a
text file and attach file to a reply

Re: [slim] m4a/aac =white noise, getting mad!!!!

2008-03-31 Thread pacman

I have the last IMac, so I guess it's Intel.
perian allows to play dvix files on QT trough frontrow, an apple media
center, so I guess it might change something in QT , but i took it off,
just in case.
What about the FLAC problem ... it's not a mac issue .

Again, what kind of solution do I have now ?

I don't know what Perian is or why it should affect SC as I don't think
it is used by SC on OSX.

The glib answer is that something is wrong on your system but the fact
that a few Roku users (different player, different server, licensed
Apple code) have a similar problem makes me think there is an Apple
problem which affects a small proportion of users.

2008-03-31 Thread pacman

Again, thanks . I'm really sorry about that faad because.
I really don't know how to install it...
I'm going to try to find a tutorial.
You say my installation might be broken,
what should I do now ?
I 'm ready to do a full reinstallation but I don't know if it will
help.
I reinstalled QT.
Could there be any problem with Perian ? maybe Perian broke something
in QT ?
How come no one had this problem ?

2008-03-31 Thread pacman

thanx again for you help . I didn't find any faad for mac, I found faac,
but it's unix files .
regarding your previous post, something change now: m4a and flac won't
start, and won't play.
So it's getting worst and worst for me. I'm getting really crazy now,
as I didn't change settings.
so aac= white noise, flac and alac =no start.

Re: [slim] m4a/aac =white noise, getting mad!!!!

2008-03-24 Thread bpa

Apples lossless use a different decoder "alac" - so it looks like only
the files which use the mov123 decoder are affected.

Assuming the m4a file are uncorrupted, haven't been changed by iTunes
(e.g. ablum art added, tags changed) and are fully accessible (i.e. no
security blocking SC or mov123), that points to a problem
* in QT libraries
* in Filetypes settings
* in the convert.conf file.

I have been reading AAC for years, half of my library is ripped CD of
mine from Itunes Suddenly, they won't play.
Again, the strange thing is that Apple lossless and other format are OK
.
I installed lame in yhe plugins of the squuezecenter, but nothing
happened.
I'm lost ,and I thought it would be a common problem

2008-03-23 Thread WhaleOil

I don't know if this will help, but every now and again I too rip a cd
that just gives me white noise. I normally rip with Max, but when I
get white noise, I find if I rip again using iTunes it all works fine.I
have never found out why this happens.

Do you get white noise with just one cd or all of your rips?

Re: [slim] m4a/aac =white noise, getting mad!!!!

2008-03-23 Thread bpa

I don't have a Mac so all I can do is offer general advice.

First - make sure the problem really is QT and not some other changes
you made. Otherwise you will go through a lot of changes and may not
have audio at the end.

If you are not very computer literate, mplayer is a more complicated
install on a Mac so try the faad instructions as per the wiki first.
Only if faad fails should you try mplayer.

There are a number of faad ports for Leopard but you don't say which
processor.

2008-03-23 Thread bpa

Lame is used to encode WAV into MP3 not decode M4A/AAC. It is used if
you want to transcode any format (incl. m4a) into MP3. Normally users
leave the settings at the default using Flac to create Flac streams.

Only mov123 decodes M4A/AAC files but it uses the QuickTime libraries
supplied by Apple. If you update QT - then it can affect mov123 which
if nothing else has changed, I am guessing is what has happened.

I suggested using faad or mplayer instead of mov133 as they do not use
QT and so break the dependence on Apple QT.

Re: [slim] m4a/aac =white noise, getting mad!!!!

2008-03-23 Thread pacman

Thanks for your answer but it seems that Lame should work for me on OS X
, no?

Here is my file format settings in File Types ?

apple lossless FLAC alac/flac
mp3 disabled
Wave alac
working fine...

apple AAC or Movie File AIFF mov123 (or disabled)
FLAC mov123/flac (or
disabled)
mp3 disabled (or
mov123/lame)

If I try to set the mp3 to mov123/lame

I get this line:

"Required binary was not found: lame for mov-mp3-*-*"

I installed Lame in the /library/Itunes
I wonder if it's correct but anyway, It was working fine before I
upgrade Itunes.

My other question is about this file types settings,

why do I only have mov123 ? I thought it was'nt working on OS X.

What is strange is that I have this message in the audio setting...

"The LAME encoder appears to be installed correctly on your system."

Re: [slim] m4a/aac =white noise, getting mad!!!!

2008-03-23 Thread bpa

I think the supplied m4a/aac decoder uses the Quicktime libraries and
sometime Apple breaks the libaries.

Why not move away from the Apple stuff to using faad or mplayer. I
think there are entries in the Wiki to get AAC support but mainly for
Linux not OSX.
