This is the exact same thing as Apple no longer supporting upgrades for a first gen iPad and then those users seem happy enough to upgrade to new models that guarantee forward compatibility. And as great as the Squeezebox ecosystem is, let's not forget that Logitech abandoned it way before Sonos stopped providing updates to a few old devices (I don't know and I don't care if they stay somewhat functional for now, not my issue :-D). But trying to convert Sonos folk to adopt the Squeezebox ecosystem is probably a pretty doomed effort. Most of the market these days is based on: 1. Bluetooth speakers. Turn them on, and stream music from your smartphone. I should say I abhor their sound and my audiophile is offended, but actually some are quite decent. 2. Smart speakers + home assistants. Turn them on, they stream music or control your TV and they also happen to spy on your entire household all the time. Big naw from this guy... like never ever. 3. Sonos. Easy to set up, multi-room and while it's not my cup of tea nor do I think it sounds mind-blowing, hey, clearly many people love it and it does claim a big spot in the market. 4. Proprietary "high end" audiophile streamers. They can look great and can provide some UI and ease of use benefits, but if they cost more than $2-3k the point eludes me entirely. And then there is us in the supposedly dead Squeezebox ecosystem. The advantages are too many to name. But the fact of the matter is that a system that was abandoned by the company championing it and now relies on the goodwill of a dedicated community is unlikely to gain mainstream success. I *do* have several friends that have adopted it and love it. Even after Logitech pulled the plug. The sonos fiasco continues unabated. The main thread has now over 2700 posts (the original thread which was closed reached about 2000) !!! I can't understand the psychology of many users who are off looking for alternative/replacement proprietary systems at huge cost. Bose seems the top choice (?1?). I'm still getting flak from 'fanboys' who condemn squeezebox/LMS as outmoded/buggy, etc. Bizarre. The sonos devices are upnp/dlna enabled - you can use philippe's UPNPbridge plugin - there's a configuration profile already set up for sonos. His airplay plugin doesn't handle airplay2 (as far as I know). The sonos devices appear as players to LMS. You lose none of the sonos features ... the two systems reside side by side. LMS control is way ahead of anything sonos have (both in ease of use and multi-system choice). ISTR issues with interop over Airplay 2 with Sonos but not sure. I picked up some Eltek speakers today for 10GBP from someone who has recently made the switch to Sonos for his home set-up. He was aware of the recent news but only recently bought so should be safe for a few years. One of the reasons that he went for them was because of their (prior) track record in supporting old players (if not their controllers). Gotta admit I made the move to Sonos about 1 year ago, retiring LMS and my Pi2 and PiCorePlayer setup. Actually sold a nice Bryston amp and Audiolabs DAC/Pre combo and bought the Sonos Amp to replace it all. I then lost some brain cells and retired my AVR and old discreet 5.1 setup in my basement to go with a Beam initially and have upgraded it to a 5.1 setup in my home theatre by adding a pair of rears (cheap Ikea Symfonisk speakers) and Sonos Sub. To be fair there is the allure of "it just works" and I (and more importantly the wife) likes the lack of wires and its streamlined appearance - a basement reno sealed all of the wires fate. The other reason for the switch was Apple Music support. Airplay worked well enough for a single person but I just missed having a shared queue for stuff like that. Sometimes my wife would like to queue up stuff, or friends - airplay didn't work for that (Spotty plugin and Spotify however was great...) None of my Sonos stuff is old enough to be legacy but on the Sonos forums I too have mentioned LMS/Squeeze as an alternative. I do still keep checking in here though. Hoping for a AM plugin for LMS. The Beam has good sound and Alexa/Google built-in: also airplay2, but I've never got the airplay2 to work with the airplay plugin. I have 2 Play 1s - they work fine. The worst aspect I've found (and Sonos are to blame here) is the 'native' conroller software. You need a recent Android/iPad smartphone to set the sonos device up (the Win PC controller has been crippled & can't be used for setup - there's no web browser access nor a linux controller). Moving to a different network or a new router is a version of 'black magic' - makes LMS almost plug'n'play by comparison. The music is the same but the delivery mechanism for Internet-accessible music has been changing ... e.g. more https, higher bit rate services, other protocols (eg hls). LMS is able to hide much of that for our devices but Sonos works in a different way. I could believe that their old devices are somewhere near the limit of their capability but my guess is that it is becoming hard for them to write software that works across the entire range (where old kit has different chips) plus the extra time it takes to test everything against the full set of hardware increases their costs. Their communication of this on top of the bricking of kit to get a discount on upgrade does seem very poor.
