Been meaning to do that for a while, but was waiting to see if by some magical chance they did an upgraded Touch that might be better, but no. So got one from Amazon while I could, and will be watching sales in case they do any wild markdowns to maybe pick up another one. Since I mostly use it for my library, everything should work for the foreseeable future and since I don't use Rhapsody that often, if that stops working, it will suck, but I'll figure something out at that time. Weird times... I guess I should download a couple of versions of LMS to keep as backups just in case. Yep , using it's digital out it's pretty much the only thing you need :) in any system at any price level at no loss in SQ ( other than imagined in the flat earth of audiophiledom ) . Those expensive hifi branded streamers are not giving you much for the money unless you fancy something with an built in high quality dac and can live with all their limitations . But the future belongs to things with digital inputs , so a player with analog output is an anachronism , considering that nowadays even the lowly ht receiver has very good dacs and SQ frighteningly close to the real things in good hifi (and far better than the voodoo designs ) . So a streamer with this feature set is going to missed in the market :-/ But given time and if someone finds the niche viable for business someone else will invent a new product but it can take some time , i'll bet it will be a bit more expensive thou , squeezebox amazing price/performance ratio is hard to beat they expected mass market sale and geared for that when manufacturing and pricing the squeezeboxes . Another product may aim directly at a smaller niche with less expectations on mass sale and choose differently , the hifi market demands a certain priceness and looks with heavy aluminium chassis etc ;) Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox Line Comes to an End (quasi official confirmation)
This is not what I was expecting when I heard plans were being made for more audio products. I had thought that this would be advancements in the product line and not step back. After reading most posts in the forums and doing a web review of the new product pitch I believe Logitec is really focusing on the mass market of people who just want simplistic playback capabilities from their mobile devices and to provide some music services. Many of the consumers of these products can care less about syncing, hi def music and using a home audio (stereo) to listen to their music. I will continue to use my squeezes as they are, I dont use mysqueezebox anyway and music services available for use in Canada are almost non existant due to the laws in Canada. I rely on my own large selection of music and internet radio. I have various copies of LMS archived and will insure I keep saving any later updates to LMS so that once it is done being supported and updated I will have many years before I have to consider any music system changes. That is provided my squeeze HW holds up. I will look to pick up spares as they become available if the price is reasonable. So for me, it is not good news to hear that this is being done but my squeeze installation should be around for many many years. And by then things should have changed in the tech world and it may be time to change. froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Amidst all the -sturm und drang- on the forums the past couple days, this comes the closest to my thinking on the recent developments. I got into SBs to do multi-room playback of my own library on the cheap, and it still serves me very well for that. Along the way, I've also become a fan of subscription services such as MOG and Rhapsody (I subscribe to both), mostly for music discovery and for grabbing certain tracks/albums that I don't happen own. So I'll need to re-evaluate whenever my SB hardware goes belly up or whenever the online services that I value are no longer available to my SB hardware (eg, pulling the plug on mysb.com with no alternative mechanism), whichever comes first. But I feel very safe in saying that the options available at that time will not look the same as they do today. aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Line Comes to an End (quasi official confirmation)
I agree that this is a bummer, and I'm trying to decide on picking up a spare Touch. Right now I have a Touch, a Boom, and a Radio (n.b. Touch Boom Radio would be an excellent name for a band). The quality of sound, multi-room playback, and apps are all important to me, but if I loose the apps and services it wouldn't kill me. Logitech's move to a more closed system to create a simpler user experience (if that is what it does) is understandable even if it is misguided. I wonder, too, if the increasing community of developers and devices utilizing the LMS backbone without the need of SB devices is a part of the picture as well. As Pippin wrote on another thread All you need is an iPhone, a dock, and iPeng. True enough...but what's in that for Logitech? Logitech is first and foremost a hardware vendor: why should they provide the back end if they don't get to sell the front end? Apple has had pretty good luck with a similar philosophy: we make great software, but you need to buy our hardware to get it. cjfreitag's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41363 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox Line Comes to an End (quasi official confirmation)
The whole development has been pretty interesting for me, as a new initiate to the SB world. Got my first device, a Touch, about a month ago. So far, I've only used it for local music, and am just scratching the surface. My first reaction was return the Touch and keep using iPeng/iPhone player. Even using the Touch as a player, most of my listening has been via headphones. For local, unsynced music only, it would be cheaper for me to return the Touch and get a portable DAC/amp for my iPhone, continuing to primarily use headphones to listen. One of the major SB advantages -- future expansion -- has been taken away. The question is whether even not expanding to multiple rooms or to online services, is the Touch worth keeping vs. putting that money towards something else. If you plan on listening via a dedicated stereo or at least larger self powered speakers (eg audio engine A5s), then you should keep. If you mostly do headphones then iPhone is all you need. garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Kinda leaning towards keeping it for both the flexibility to listen via stereo and to see what comes next from the community developers here. I find it incredible that Logitech didn't market their Squeezeboxes better as it's miles ahead of the competition. To cater for the non-techy folk two flavours of LMS could have been introduced. Ah well. Sad day indeed.
