The most reliable method would be to buy a Wireless Access Point from a
computer store, place it near a window facing your garden and connect
it to your existing BT modem with a long network cable. This will
hopefully give you the range you need but the down side is you may need
to run a long cable between rooms.

Using the repeater option mentioned is also good and requires no cables
between your router and the wireless access point but is a little more
fiddly to setup and in my experience isn't quite as reliable as the
 first option.

You should be able to do both options yourself by following the manual
that comes with the access point but if you can't you would need to get
an IT guy to come out and sort it. It should take them 30 mins max to
set it all up for you and check your radio can get a signal. It would
be worth listing the model you wish to buy here first as most but not
 all support the repeater function.

That's clear. Thanks.

But how do I choose one? There are hundreds of these things! There
doesn't seem to be any objective measure of their strength or their
reliability.

It would be great if someone who has had positive experiences would
recommend one.

Update
Never did get anywhere with this. Billion's UK support is as worthless
as most electronics manufacturers these days. Despite being chased
several times I heard nothing more back from them. I acquired some
older firmwares from other Billion owners but these didn't make any
difference.

In the end, for other reasons, I replaced the SB3 with a Touch. Because
the Touch has it's own clock to display the time in standby, the issue
doesn't arise.

Re: [slim] How can I listen to my music in the garden?

2011-04-19 Thread bobkoure

There's little objective measure of strength because the power output is
regulated by, well, not law, exactly; here in the US it's regulated by,
FCC regulation.

If you have a techie friend, I'd suggest just getting one of the
routers that can have DD-WRT installed on it. I use an 'Asus WL-520'
a repeater and it's been flawless.

I'd also suggest newegg.com as a place to look at customer reviews,
which is about as close as you'll get to reliability ratings.

All that said, before you start looking at all this - how close are
your nearest neighbors? Could you be having an interference problem
with one of their routers? If that's a possibility (and if you can), it
might be worth changing the 'channel' that your router is using. If it's
like the US, it came set to 6. Try 1 or 11. It could be as simple as
that.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squidget - A SqueezeBox Widget for Android

2011-04-19 Thread strindberg

Loving this widgets, it's great!

Some cotmments:
* When I listen to Internet radio, it seems that Squidget is requesting
an update to the album art every second or so. I get a small work in
progress circle flashing every second. A bit annoying. I don't see it
when I play music from my library.
* I find the buttons that are visible on the 2x4 widget to be the once
I use, and I actually want the other buttons to be less accessible,
just as it is. I do have screen space to spare, however, so I would
like to use a 4x4 layout with the same number of buttons. In
particular, I don't use the favorite, star or facebook buttons at all,
and would prefer that they not be there at all.
* I can't find any way of seeing to which player I'm connected, without
pressing the the player icon and getting the lists of players. It would
be great if the current player was instantly visible somehow.
* The Squidget button really doesn't add any value to the user, does
it, apart from showing the about box. Could it be removed perhaps? The
player button is to tiny and could use the screen space.

Keep up the great work!

Squeezeplay based box.

Theoretically, yes. But then it would make more sense to write a real
search plugin.

I don't think Erland's SQL plugin is currently made for it and then
you'd have to live with all the changes to the database that happen on
the server side all the time. iPeng can't be tailored to one server
version like the SB firmware is, it has to support a full range of
server versions and Logitech have the nasty habit of doing all kind of
changes even in minor releases.

You're certainly right about server query performance being suboptimal.

I believe SQLite is faster on slower systems. Generally, 7.6 has become
much faster but that's more due to optimized queries and stuff like
artwork handling and scanner being rewritten than sheer database
performance.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squidget - A SqueezeBox Widget for Android

2011-04-19 Thread ganjastone

Thanks strindberg,

Actually I've been quite busy solving all the reported issues so far,
and the coming release solves the internet radio issue reported also by
Flattermann. It also solves all other reported issues so far, except the
Sony Eperia - see below.

In addition, all layouts were polished to look better and to increase
usability, and all layouts have larger player switching buttons now.
I think it would be a bit complicated to find space for player name on
all layouts, but I'll look into it when I add support for player per
widget feature (currently if you use multiple widgets, all of them
present the same player).

I'm thinking of customization options to enable you to pick what you
want to see but at least at the moment, until getting further feedbacks
I prefer to have it clean and simple.

There is a new nice looking 4x4 widget which I developed as well where
I integrated in-widget support for rating and a tiny progress bar. Take
a look at the attached screen shots of what's coming tonight. Also added
an alternative volume control which functions in parallel to current +,-
buttons. There is a new volume icon on all layouts that pops up a slider
for instant volume changes.

All widgets now auto-refresh every 5 seconds when the screen is on, to
reduce situations where the view was not up to date. On screen off, the
widgets are put to sleep until the screen is on again in order to save
battery.

Regarding the Squidget button, it's the application logo. It was not
intended to be a button, I just have no space for any about disclaimer,
so I used the logo. It's not going away...

I had to add an annoying pop up that you will see only once when
Squidget is upgraded or installed. It explains how to add a widget
(specifically Squidget) to your home screen. I had several support
issues with that and even some refunds due to that.

I am also still struggling with those tiny resolutions of the Sony
Experia. If you read this post and own such a phone - Squidget still
does NOT work on these devices properly. I'm on it though.

I truly appreciate your feedback. It helps a lot to make Squidget
better.
Don't forget to upgrade to the latest release tonight!

Regards,
Avi

Something like this would work http://www.ebuyer.com/product/220595

The wireless N devices are faster and have better range than the B
or G ones and in particular look out for ones advertised as 300Mbps
rather than 150Mbps as these have 3 antenna rather than 2.

The routers with visible external antenna often allow those antenna to
be replaced with bigger perhaps directional antenna which might help if
your garden is very big but realistically if you can site the extender
at a window you shouldn't have range problems unless there are trees in
the way (leaves are great at soaking up wireless signals).

Does Zimbra scroll like a native App, even in cases where it has to
build it's pages itself (not the server)?
Often, JS apps look like they perform well because most of the load is
being handled by the server.

I haven't seen any frontend-heavy JS apps that perform well on either
Android or iOS on lower-spec devices (iPhone 4 and iPad may be OK,
older iPhones or slow Android devices twnd to be horrible).

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

2011-04-19 Thread Michael Herger
There's plenty of JavaScript doing all the server comms.

The biggest issue with scrolling is the fact that mobile browsers don't support
such a simple thing as fixed divs in CSS. You can't have a footer always
displayed with using HTML/CSS only on any iOS/Android device. Scrolling divs
otoh require the user to use two fingers - which many users wouldn't discover.
Thus there are several JS approaches to work around this seemingly simple
problem. But it's not simple, and it requires a lot of processing. iScroll is
one very well known solution, dedicated to nothing else but implement
headers/footers with a scrollable area in between.

As you can see there's a cost to a free controller app. Spend a beer on
SqueezeCommander if you don't like the performance.

I prefer the flexibility of iPeng though, so I rarely use SqueezePad.

I just started using Squeezepad on iPad2 and have been very impressed
with ease of install and set up, plus general usability - it's very
easy to use and I feel more intuitive than iPeng. That you can stream
direct to iPad effectively adds another SB zone to one's network, and
furthermore with USB out into BW MM1s on board DAC one has a good
source of streamed digital music rather than being limited to the
format support that Apple likes.

For functionality and flexibility, i use SqueezeCommander for Android
on an HTC, and this excels at synchronising zones etc, plus turning
on/off individual controllers. Bit slower sometimes to scroll thru
lists is it's only downside. I barely use the Duet anymore...

For usability Squeezepad is very, very good.
Thumbs up.

The squeezebox radio has ethernet and line in.

Would people be willing to buy an Airport Express just to get AirPlay
support through their Squeezebox ?

Feels like the solution discussed in the following thread sounds a lot
better. It can of course only be provided by third parties as it
probably balances on the border between legal/illegal which will make
it impossible for Logitech to provide it, but still.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86972

If you have an AirPort Express, you can always connect its line out to
the line in in the computer running SBS and use the Wave Input plugin.
That probably works already today but it might be a bit too user
unfriendly to setup so that probably makes it a less interesting path.

For me the only purpose of AirPlay support in Squeezebox is to:
1. To make it possible to stream audio from friends mobile phones
2. To make it possible to stream audio from third party iOS
apps/services which isn't available on Squeezebox. As an example,
YouTube might be of interest if AirPlay is able to stream only the
audio from the iOS YouTube app, but I'm not completely sure this is
possible, it probably require an AirPlay devices that also support
video.

I don't have any need to stream locally stored music from my iOS
devices as I already have that music in my SBS library.

SQL Playlist playlists that takes a parameter it currently doesn't
support free text parameters which would be required to support
searching.

I once thought about designing a Custom Search plugin but there wasn't
much interest at that time and at the moment I'm unfortunately fully
occupied with other more important Squeezebox related stuff related to

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

2011-04-19 Thread Jaicee

Thanks for the explanation Michael that makes more sense.

I would say though that it might be worth considering changing the
implementation as you must know it really is quite slow compared to
just about any other controller apps. Even though its not ideal
pagination would IMHO be far better than the slowness that is currently
exhibited.

I think the real problem though is that its a web app yet this is not
obvious when using it. I expected a native app where the buttons would
respond instantly rather than a web page where the expectation is that
things take longer to react. I know its not what you'd want to hear but
I think you should consider whether a web app is the best platform for a
controller? I may of course be totally wrong about this and there may be
devices that can deal with the JS you are using and be smooth but the
reviews on the marketplace suggest this isn't the case.

Saying the app is free is a bit disingenuous, its there presumably to
encourage sales of your hardware. I know one of the reasons I recently
purchased a SBRadio was because I heard of the release of the Android
app and re-evaluated whether SB met all my requirements since I was in
the market for a multiroom solution. If there is a good Android app
which does away witht he need to purchase yet another remote I'll
probably be looking to buy two or three more SB devices.

Anyway thank you for your reply, this is all in the spirit of
constructive criticism and I think its great to find the devs
interacting on a public forum.

Yes I do agree but that there are apps that are native and do give good
experiences but from Logitechs point of view there are two points of
view. Firstly surely if you are going to release an app you should at
least make sure its going to provide a good experience. Secondly there
is also that psychological thing (and its crazy I know after spending
£100+ on a radio) that £3 on an app is annoying.

Finally I work in IT dealing with a lot of regular consumers. There is
a significant proportion who would get a Squeezebox, see the advertised
app download it and find it sluggish and simply assume all other apps
are like that. If they were instead delighted with a nice responsive UI
that made them want to use their SBs more then they are far more likely
to buy more SB for other rooms.

I don't want to even go into other reasons why having a good free app
will drive more sales but I can certainly think of a few.

Anyway I'm just coming at this from the point of view of someone who
has just bought a SB and has only moved to Android phone from Symbian
in the last 4 months, previously things like apps to control the device
wouldn't of factored into the decision.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squidget - A SqueezeBox Widget for Android

2011-04-19 Thread ganjastone

Hi there,

Time for a new update. Here goes:

Bug Fixes:
Fixed a sync and rating issues related to internet radio stations.
Fixed Power state button when playlist is empty.

New features:
New layout – 4x4.
Progress bar in 3x4 4x4 layouts.
Rating is available on the large layouts inline (no pop up dialog).
Alternate volume mechanism – between the +/- there is an icon that pops
up a volume slider.
Added automatic refresh every 5 seconds .
Screen off + pause + power off turns off automatic refresh.
Layout polishing.
Player button was enlarged on all layouts.

Known issues:
Sony Experia – problems displaying the widget on those small displays
Player names containing accented characters may display improperly.

Automatic update is an awesome feature, however the way android
implemented Widgets before 2.3 imposes heavy resource usage on every
update. The outcome is that every update (every 5 sec) there is a
resource consuming operation (memory spike of around 1MB for a few
milliseconds). Notice it may impact the performance of your device.
Please let me know if you feel any impact. The devices I used for
testing showed no impact but these are relatively new devices. Weaker /
older devices may behave differently and I may need to tune Squidget for
these.

Enjoy it,
Avi

From the Squeezebox Server (SBS) web interface, go to My Music Music
Folder [sub-folder where you saved the MP3] and press the Play icon.
Or instead of using the SBS web interface you could do it directly on

This assumes that you have already specified the My Music folder as
the folder for your music library in the SBS settings (Settings Basic

As one of the regular consumers Jaicee speaks of I had high
expectations for the OEM-developed app. The Duet remote I purchased to
control my SBC is extremely limited in navigating through 80,000 tracks
so naturally an app I can install on a 10-inch tablet with its big
screen and qwerty keyboard holds a lot of promise but the actual
experience has been frustrating.
Someone not quite as stubborn as I am might abandon the entire system
for another one marketed as the answer. The vast majority of SB

patches, hacks, work-arounds, etc. and their experience is limited to
the out-of-the-box experience only.

Thanks

I've been looking at your blog and don't think it's possible to do what
I would like. Perhaps I can spell it out and you can tell me why I can't
do it, or if it may be possible in the future?

1. Take my iPad to my holiday flat (which has wifi)
2. Connect Squeezepad Playback to MySqueezebox.com
3. Connect to Napster
4. Use Airplay to send the music from Napster to an Apple TV, or an
Airport Express.

Sitting here at home I can select mySB.com ON and seem to be able to
connect Playback to mySB.com. I can then get some radio stations to
play. I also seem to be able to connect to Napster. However, when I
select a Napster track to play there is no sound.

Am I just imagining that Playback is connected to mySB.com?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

2011-04-19 Thread pippin

Oh, but to elaborate: ask the OP. For HIM, it was obviously a
differentiator that the App came from Logitech.

Actually I do understand why Logitech feel they have to have their own,
branded App, what I feel sad about is what I feel they are doing with
this product line which would just have so much more potential if done
right.

That said: using Web Apps to write universal Apps is a big tend right

What can I say, I was attracted by the fact that there was a remote app
and I naturally assumed the Logitech one would be decent.

I think you're right though about the potential of the system. The
reason I bought a SB was because we're moving house and wanted a
multiroom system that could sync to play back all our music. Naturally
I looked at the other options, Sonos seemed nice but they were
expensive, had a crazy mesh network making extending the range hard and
there were no battery powered options available. SB seemed to have a
good range of devices to cover all my needs, not be too expensive, not
need yet another controller, could be controlled by my harmony remote
or phone and it has a load of community apps too.

I really do hope Logitech keep the product line moving, I was about to
buy a Boom to go with the Radio but after researching it here it seems
clear that anything that's not a Touch/Radio is probably EOL and won't
be getting any new apps like the Spotify one.

Also, not directed at pippin :), why develop an app at all and not
invest enough time to get it working smoothly? I'm hopeful though as
the app has only been out for a month, in the mean time it looks like
I'm buying SqueezeCommander.

Hi Keith,
well - your scenario would be possible if you tried anything else than
Napster (as you can see when streaming internet Radio).

The problem with Napster is, that it only streams WMA files.
Unfortunately Microsoft charges incredible fees for WMA decoders (see
here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/licensing/final.aspx#WindowsMediaAudioStandardVersion_Final).
Thus it's not possible for me to make WMA and Napster streaming a
reality.

It is possible to stream Napster via SqueezePad with some workaround
though.
If one uses a Windows based Squeezebox-server (even on Linux machines I
guess it's working with some additional plugins installed), then this
one will receive the Napster stream, decode it and send it as a
WAV-stream to SqueezePad. SqueezePad in turn can stream it via AirPlay
to your AppleTV or Airport Express.

So if you have a Laptop in you holiday flat where you can install the
Squeezebox-Server and then connect SqueezePad to that server (opposed
to directly to MySB.com) it would work.

You might want to make sure that you have tagged the files as you would
want to. It will prevent tagged files/folders getting mixed up with
ones that are untagged. I always tag and add any artwork prior to
moving music to the folder SBS points to because it just keeps things

[slim] Sync several SBs

2011-04-19 Thread shogger

Hi there - sorry if done before.
I have 3 differents SBs, a Radio, Boom and (just recently) a Touch.
Occasionally I would like to be able to sync all 3 machines together
but there doesn't seem to be a facility to do this i.e. you can sync
two together but that then automatically unsyncs the third machine.
I can see why there might be practical reasons why this might be
difficult, but wondered if anybody knew of a way of doing this?
Many thanks

Indeed, in iPeng it should be rather simple. For details, see
Help-Quick Tutorials-Players and Music Sources.

1. Go to the MultiPlayer page (swipe right on NowPlaying), it's that
one:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/wp-content/gallery/ipeng-1-2/img_0321.png
2. press the edit button at the top right, you can now select and
unselect players, at the bottom left there is a checkmark button to
select all at once.
3. after you've checked the players you want to sync, press the sync
button (chain icon) at the bottom center.
4. iPeng will now ask you which player's playlist you want to use on
the synced players.
5. et voila.

Re: [slim] Sync several SBs

2011-04-19 Thread pski

Use the webUI. On the computer that is running Squeezebox Server, open a
web browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari) and go to:

http://localhost:9000

On other computers go to:

http://ip of your SBS machine:9000

The players are in a pull down in the upper right. Pick a player you
want to sync, then select Synchronize in the drop down and pick another
player you want to pair it with and select synchronize.

To add another player to that pair, FIRST SELECT the additional player
and then select synchronize to add it to the others.

The mental leap is that you FIRST SELECT the player you want to add to
or drop from a sync group. If three players are synced and you want to
drop one from the group, FIRST SELECT the player you want to drop and
then select the synchronize option.

The iPeng method does seem much simpler. I can also see why there needs

You can still use the web UI. Assuming you have a computer, just point
its web browser to http://NAS_IP:9000/ to get the web UI, substituting
the real IP address of your ReadyNAS in place of NAS_IP in the address.

As the OP (yes, I'm still here), it wasn't so much that the App came

control interface, which I'm use to and like. I also like that it
allows me to switch between my wife's and my Pandora accounts, it
allows me to move to different positions within the current playing
track, and I find the up-and-down volume buttons really easy to use
(and necessary). I haven't really had any performance problems,
although I've had some lock-ups. But my ripped music collection
currently is miniscule compared to what it will be.

I'm a new Android user (I've had an LG Optimus V for about a month,
which I haven't even activated as a phone, yet), so I'm still learning
and getting used to it (I've never had a smart phone before).

I've been hesitant about getting a native app for this mainly because
my LG is already tight on space (I've moved everything I can to the
card and it sounds like native apps preload the data and album
art--where is all this stored?). I also like the principle of thin
clients, with the data and most of the work done on the server
(although I realize that principles don't always work so well in the
real world). I'm also hesitant about buying without trying (will there
be performance and/or space issues?, will it allow me to move
back-and-forth within a track?, easily change volume?, etc.).

That said, I find all this discussion really interesting and I am
getting used to native Android apps. Sooner or later I'll probably be
doing more research on the native apps and most likely end up with one
or two.

I gather these are amps to boost past regulation power levels. There's
no need for that for your usage. There's also the possibility that one
of your neighbors is running one of these, killing your garden
reception. BTW, if you do anything like that, -please- stay away from
channel 6, as that's where most folks who haven't a clue are - they
won't know what hit 'em.

Personally, I'd first try changing channels, and if that didn't work,
spending the ~$35 on a dd-wrt box to use as a repeater. And if -that-
didn't work, I'd think about a directional antenna (replacement or a
reflector around the dipole that's already there. But I'd be amazed if
you needed this for your application.

Re: [slim] 10 android tablet $280 at woot (3/23 only)

It's certainly cheap enough.

I considered an Archos internet tablet some while back, but got scared
off by all the negative comments in the user forums (which I found as
part of researching the device and didn't save).
They may have improved, and they may just have a bunch of whiny users.

I would suggest that you think a couple of times about a tablet as
large as 10. It turns out to be inconveniently large for a tablet,
even though that's absurdly small for a win/lin screen. FWIW, I'm
considering selling my g-tab and getting something smaller (maybe a
nook color that I can re-ROM as I now realize I don't care -that- much
about performance.)

I'd also suggest you stick to devices that have a community and that
are supported by at least one alternative ROM. Otherwise you're stuck
with whatever modifications the manufacturer shipped it with.

[slim] Have you dream also my yearning

2011-04-19 Thread shangjia

Find inner self, and develop self personality, is a people's internal
growth process. Children due to mental is not yet, must from growing in
praise of the close and affirmation, to be encouraged. Others praise and
criticism, is all external factors, we can't always rely on external
evaluation to understand themselves, only their own explore, discover
to close to the real self. A grown man, more can understand his own
strengths and weaknesses, More not be outside disturbance, also more
can understand inner world, and can control your joy. From the childish
dependent psychology, mind to mature happy.

Re: [slim] Best way to play from PC a new MP3 you just donwloaded

2011-04-19 Thread grodri02

Is there a way to play a file straight from a folder from your computer?
Like I open My music folder and I see the MP3 or Flac I want to play and
in someway make the touch play that file.

I have always played my music this way using winamp. See the song I
like, double click, and it plays!

The only solution I can think of at the moment is to use the Wave Input
plugin which I think can be configured to send the audio from the
computer to the Squeezebox Touch.

What we really need is someone to implement a simple shell extension
that executes a CLI/JSON command like this based on the file you
select:
01:02:03:04:05:06 playlist play /music/abba/01_Voulez_Vous.mp3

Where 01:02:03:04:05:06 is the mac address or name of the Squeezebox
and /music/abba/01_Voulez_Vous.mp3 is the path to the file.
