Re: [slim] Extended wifi network - use same channel ?

2014-02-13 Thread swayzak

Well touch wood, my network has been better since moving over to
different channels.

I guess, despite being the same SSID / password, the 2 networks are
different physical networks which a device has to link to communicate
through. And defined by the SSID, not the channel number as you say.

Avoiding shared channels with your neighbours (to minimise interference
issues) would also apply to this situation ?

Yes, depending on how far away they are.

If you have an Android phone, down load Wifi Analyser. You'll see what
wifi networks are in your vicinity, what channels they are on etc.
There's probably a similar iOS app

That's exactly what I use already - and obviously showed very strong
signals from both my networks on the same channel number. If different
devices are connected to the separate networks (despite sharing same
SSID/password) then I would suspect interference could be an issue.

Now the strong signals are on different channels (1 6), and this also
seems to dissuade neighbours from sharing these channels (I assume at
least some of there routers are set to auto channel select) - these
seem to piling up on channel 11 now.

I have been happily running Squeezeplay on my Win7 (now 8.1) machine for
a few years with no problems.
My LMS is installed on a WHS.

Yesterday, for apparently no reason, Squeezeplay stopped talking to

It may have been because I was rebooting the WHS at the time, but
normally Squeezeplay will connect when LMS is available.
 But not this time.

I could see the player from the webGUI, and it would work from there.
But trying to connect to my LMS gave the spinny graphic and failed.

I examined all the .lua files I could find in the user directory
(user/AppData/Roaming/Squeezeplay), and found two instances where the
 text squeezeNetwork=true was included.
 (Playback.lua SlimDiscovery.lua)
I changed these both to squeezeNetwork=false, and Squeezeplay came
 back to life.

Not sure if this would work in all cases, but worth a try.

Presumably, it decided to try and connect to SqueezeNetwork, and
 wouldn't go back ??

My guess is it just took a while to get your LMS (logitech media server)
online and active. In between it defaulted to squeeze network. If you
would have just waited a little bit, it would have probably given you
the choice again.

PS WHS = windows home server?

correct, auto select would try to use the least congested/nearby

Re: [slim] Extended wifi network - use same channel ?

2014-02-13 Thread reinholdk

In addition to the correct points garym made:

All devices communicating over a certain channel have to share the
limited bandwidth of that channel and have to avoid collisions while
talking. So the more clients are talking on a channel the less
throughput can be expected. And the different channels are partly
overlapping, which can decrease performance further. The only
non-overlapping channels in the 2.4GHz range are the 1, 6 and 11.

So if you have different APs, try to use different channels - but this
also depends on how many WiFis are in your neighborhood and on which
channels they're talking.

Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!

2014-02-13 Thread sle118

I am having issues downloading music tracks as mp3 from my collection,
which is in FLAC. The problem is documented as a new TRAC ticket
http://orangebikelabs.com/trac/orangesqueeze/ticket/137

In short, downloading a single track correctly initiates transcoding on
my server (grabbing the URL from the server debug log and pasting it in
a web browser results in a succesful file download). On the phone,
diagnostics show a download progressing with byte count steadily
increasing, but the target folder never seem to get the file.

When exiting the app and coming back, all incomplete downloads are
started over again until they are removed from the list.

Can anyone comment? Was anyone able to download/transcode? Did anyone
have the issue and resolved it?

The ticket wasn't acknowledged yet by orange bike labs.

Personally I also use Orange Squeeze Preview too and haven't manually
started squeezeplayer for ages.

In OSP just goto the player screen and click the option to start
squeezeplayer.

Note this is only the player menu available from the left swipe main
menu, then option to start SP doesn't appear in the player list
available from the top bar.

Re: [slim] Google Chromecast

2014-02-13 Thread DBCooper

Found one answer to that question. Bought this:

15600

That adapter's ten bucks on eBay. Has an HDMI in, to plug in the
Chromecast device, then use that audio out to achieve the equivalent of
a Squeezebox device, for line level music input. Plug that audio into a
little $20 Lepai 2020+ amp and a pair of speakers and I can scatter
those all around the house and outside, anywhere in reach of the wifi
signal. Done and dusted for less than $100 each music station, then
control any and all with an Android phone. This is cool!

Thanks. I have found that HDMI-VGA adaptor on Ebay UK.

Am I right that it will require a power supply. Some of the other

Have I got this right? The HDMI cable carries no analogue audio, so the
adaptor must have an on board DAC.

Have you assessed the performance of that DAC, and the quality of the

 =
Q: Why can’t I change the wireless channel of my Almond when it’s used

A: In Range Extender mode, the Almond must be synched with the main
router’s channel. If the Almond’s channel is changed independently, it
 will no
longer be able to extend the range.

 Anyone have any thoughts? thanks

Why not wire it to the main router , range extending works it does just
that but the speed gets at least 1/2 of the original if not worse .
Multiple AP's usually means that they are all wired together .

Re: [slim] Rhapsody crashing Squeezeplay devices?

2014-02-13 Thread Michael Herger

Firmware update not out yet, should be soon. You'll see a message to
update the software/firmware when it's ready.

Here's another update. As I mentioned earlier this week we do have
firmware with a fix for the Rhapsody/Napster issue. Unfortunately it
turned out that this came at unexpected cost. Some other features (incl.
TinyLMS on Touch) are broken. We yet have to figure out what is causing
this.

That said: if you are willing to take the risk of running new beta
firmware for your Touch, and don't need the built-in server, please
shoot me a mail (michael ät slimdevices dot com). We're planning to
provide access to a pre-release build asap.

Please note that at this point this is limited to SB Touch (and probably
UE Smart Radio), as manually updating the SB Radio is a bit more
involved and comes at a higher risk of bricking the device.
