I still don't see the difference, but you can see things as dodgy that you
want to see as dodgy, as you said. So it's generic. So what? His viewer
will view 5 formats that cover most of the major office suites, so what's
wrong with calling it an office viewer? I mean, you throw a PDF viewer and
a WP viewer on there, and you got your bases covered. Although, maybe Word
Processor viewer may be more appropriate, since he didn't mention
spreadsheets, emails, presentations, or databases.

Sees people rushing for the battlefield swinging their axes.

Registering a domain name is a common way to promote a product or service.
When someone creates a product or simply wants to promote it, getting as
many people to go there is a common goal. Actually, it is a stepping stone
to the ultimate goal of getting the person to act, whether that action is to
buy something, learn something, download something, or whatever. The
benefit is to get more hits, which turn into more actions, downloads,
purchases, whatever.

Was it a dodgy move for Microsoft to register microsoftoffice.com? I mean,
they already own one domain name - and office.microsoft.com is the same page
as microsoftoffice.com - so they don't really need microsoftoffice.com.
They don't really need Windows.com either, I suppose.

What about Apple? Does Apple really need to own itunes.com and
ipod.comwhen they have
apple.com/itunes and apple.com/ipod?

I can understand you not liking the ads about OOo being, well, you know...
But I don't get why the domain name bothers you. It's not like he
registered openofficeviewers.com or anything, (which is available it seems,
btw). But he could if he wanted to.

There's probably enough room for a free viewer of various business-type
files along side OpenOffice.org.

But hey, let's just swing our axes some more and see who takes the longest
to fall over dead.

First, please don't call it freeware. OpenOffice is open source
which is much better than freeware:

  * Most freeware is only free for non-commercial use. OpenOffice.org is
  free for any use.

  * Most freeware has a limited trial period and they you pay. Open
source does not. It never expires.

But the biggest difference is in re-distribution:

  * You can put open source on a CD and give it to as many people as you
like. You can even sell it and make money.

  * If you are a programmer, you can take the source code and modify it to
make a new product. For example, Sun Microsystems makes StarOffice and
IBM makes Workplace. Both products are 99% OpenOffice.org

To learn more about what open source is, see here:

  http://opensource.org

  I would encourage you to try OpenOffice.org. It's a good product. A
little different from MS Office, but not difficult to learn. It's well
worth the investment in learning it.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

  Cheers,
  Daniel.

Re: [discuss] FREE?

2005-08-23 Thread Daniel Carrera

Hello Dion,

I work in a Chinese school as computer administrator and I want to help
our management in how to reduce the expenses in buying Microsoft Office.

You came to the right place. :-)

I'm just curios about the license of Open Office before I go to anywhere
else. I like to ask is...
is the Open Office 100% FREE?

Yes. 100%.

You can install it on as many computers as you like 100% free.
You can use it at home, school, or in a business 100% free.

Please tell me more about this as freeware.
