[Diversity-talk] Code of conduct

2020-12-08 Thread Heather Leson
Hey

A few of us are going to meet this saturday about code of conduct in osm.
There is a codw of conduct but we think there needs to be more. We can also
touch on the diversity work that mikel shared previously.

1500 utc before the osmf board meeting at 1600 utc.

Hope you can join. This will be a small group discussion. We can always
widen the circle later.

Link to be shared later. Note this will be a safe and positive space
discussion. We will adhere strongly to the diversity list code.

Thanks so much

[Diversity-talk] Some thoughts on upcoming governance

Dears the OSMF board elections are coming soon. The current board has done
good work.

How can we support a diverse and inclusive board? I think we should all
help make this happen

Re: [Diversity-talk] UK Chapter Feedback on Diversity Statement

2020-04-24 Thread Heather Leson
Thanks fro this.

Soren - Diversity statements are important for diversity and inclusion
within global spaces. To me this is one of the big priorities that OSM has
to address in order to flourish as a global map network and community.

To be honest, I am happy to have a phone call with you and Rory if you have
more questions about 'why.'

Re: [Diversity-talk] Community track at SOTM

2020-02-23 Thread Heather Leson
HI Christine, thanks for this note and reminder. It has been a fairly
difficult week personally, so I do send my respect to the Diversity
community for the radio silence and rush planning.

I constructed 3 sessions based on the past 3 years we have had to build out
community and diversity conversations at SOTM. Each works as building
blocks. I gather we need 3 separate sessions?

The upside is that my flight just got delayed so I can keep working on
this.

The summary (for cowriting)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yYq4meuX82gVb255LBATHqaNLBakOL-UXWeNA05ieis/edit

Background - listed in my diary entries and from our conversations.

We have only a few hours to submit. I will do so once i sync with Trudy.

Re: [Diversity-talk] [Osmf-talk] First Meeting of Diversity and Inclusion Special Committee

2020-02-16 Thread Heather Leson
Hi folks, thanks for this dialogue and for holding this space. Last week
was very 'head down' for my day job, so I am later to the conversations.

Some thoughts on a way forward:

   - *Research : *Building an action research and qualitative feedback loop
could help build trust. I'll reach out to Maggie on this.
   - *Metrics and planning: *we should connect with wider communities in
the open space on this. Who could help on this front? eg.
   https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Heather%20Leson/diary/392119 and
   https://chaoss.community/
   - *Community advocacy* for a chair role is key. Happy to talk with
anyone considering this role. And, write up a draft plan. (some resources

<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Lq1ZO4DhxUXv0-CiFxz0Yv8mmryD-fw0yAZZwR7U1V8/edit>
   )
   - *DISC role *- Overall, consistency and planning is key. Thus, I
recommend monthly checkins, input into the OSMF board f2f and tying the
activities to the various SOTM activities and local chapter meetups.

Thank you again,
Heather

Re: [Diversity-talk] Community track at SOTM

2020-02-11 Thread Heather Leson
Thanks for the question, Christine. We were hoping to string together 3
sessions for a morning. This way we can build on how we might progress on
community. My draft suggestion is to consider some of the topics from
fosdem, the osm swot and the community survey. Next I will start a
collaborative draft.

In this draft, we will shape the themes and formats.

I am on work mission this week so I wont be able to tackle this until the
weekend. The good news is that ive been contacted offlist by some allies
who are keen to have productive make sessions

Thanks again

[Diversity-talk] What can we do in OSM

2020-01-19 Thread Heather Leson
Hi Folks, I've been thinking about Allan's call to share Strengths,
Opportunities, Weaknesses and Threats. Have you added anything? I added
some comments today.

If you don't feel comfortable adding details or creating an anonymous
account, but want to give your points, I and others could happily help.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_SWOT

I asked Allan (board) what they will do with this data and input.
<https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/apm-wa/diary/391918#comments> It is a
large accountability line.

"As for a “community curated OSM strategy and project roadmap”, let’s
please take one step at a time. There is a faction within OSM’s community
that has expressed strong opinions that nothing is broken and thus no
actions are needed by the Board, period."

Thanks

"Yet surprisingly few women participate in it: rates of involvement by

activists engaged in free and open-source software to understand why,

Our Resolution process - guidance for how to improve

Our OSM Etiquette guidance has some of the 'sentiment'
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Etiquette

What is missing is - the norms, culture and, sadly, the enforcement to make
the wider community space a safe and inclusive space.

I really appreciate how Mozilla has worked to openly discuss diversity and
inclusion.

I even asked their wider network for guidance on how we should run or 2019
SOTM session. There are many allies in the open space who have been here.
Let's learn from them. I believe in OSM and know that many of us are
observing, doing and making this a healthy space.

thank you

2019-10-15 Thread Heather Leson
Hi folks I added comments. And, Rebecca, thanks for writing this post and
taking so many notes.

Overall I felt that our OSM SOTM session was not just about the conference.
The blog post does lean towards that. I changed the 2nd section to include
"wider osm" as we talked abour governance and leadership overall at osm

Again - thank you everyone for this collaboration. I am sure this post will
resonate with many.

See you soon

Re: [Diversity-talk] Your talk submission for SotM 2019

2019-09-03 Thread Heather Leson
Dear colleagues,

I hope that your summer was grand.

I am researching formats for this. One thing that might help us is to
tackle what is inclusive language and what are some of the measures to
improve diversity - specifically in the board and working groups. Thoughts?

"The OSM community is global and diverse. Building on last year's Open
Heroines conversation, we will co-create a space for OSM to talk about how
to improve diversity and inclusion in our amazing project. All welcome."

How can OSM be more diverse and inclusive? Join us to share your lessons
and ideas on how we might grow and support a Diversity and Inclusive
approach in OSM. This is an activity taking place across other 'open'
communities. We will ask participants to co-create plans and identify how
we might incorporate it into small and big activities within the global
network. The format will be co-created with some potential outcomes. The
goal is to be a conversation with interactive, participatory methods and
some small group work.

Just a quick update. For those that asked, here is a summary of questions
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cOUgTwwLBKIgeVfFMvUnK2y64ixr07h1RcM36f0jC2Q/edit#>
we saw on the 'Dear Men' calls, and some of the responses/links we
gathered.
I feel like having a workshop to help cis-men set goals, and create an
accountability partner might be a next logical step, but interested in what
you think. I can see how much the idea of Lucas's book club would be
welcomed here too. Maybe we can pilot that later this summer?

The RSVP invite for our July 19th call can be found here.
<https://events.mozilla.org/diversityinclusioninopencommun> WE WOULD SO
LOVE to hear about what you're working on <3 Please join and share.

Thanks again,

Hi everyone,

Hope all is well, and the sun is shining in your corner of the world :)

Two quick updates.

Following-up on the newsletter idea, I have a form! And, if I get enough
submissions
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScAlLb6MkO8QJZV6r2ChB9BkzxyFj6N9UrTuyvah4Y6zMAvTQ/viewform>
for good content, then I will publish a July newsletter.

Also, the D call
<https://events.mozilla.org/dearmeninopensourcethiscallisf> this week is a
different one, and based on the conversation before, where I think we
agreed that bringing people in from the edges is critical to make
progress. To that end, my call is an experiment in direct-invite of those
folks - with promise of a safe space to ask questions, and support in
goal-setting. We'll see, I hope I don't spend the hour alone! If you can
help direct people who would benefit, I would be grateful - here's a
great sample
tweet <https://twitter.com/sparklingrobots/status/1136049562836037632> from
Drupal's @Sparklingrobots.

Thanks so much!

[Diversity-talk] Diversity and Inclusion session - SOTM

2019-04-25 Thread Heather Leson
HI folks, building on last year's Open Gender Monologues, I am submitting a
session for SOTM on Diversity and Inclusion. The deadline is today but I am
hoping we can all co-create the plans.

"The OSM community is global and diverse. Building on last year's Open
Heroines conversation, we will co-create a space for OSM to talk about how
to improve diversity and inclusion in our amazing project. All welcome. "

How can OSM be more diverse and inclusive? Join us to share your lessons
and ideas on how we might grow and support a Diversity and Inclusive
approach in OSM. This is an activity taking place across other 'open'
communities.

We will ask participants to co-create plans and identify how we might
incorporate it into small and big activities within the global network.

The format will be co-created with some potential outcomes. The goal is to
be a conversation with interactive, participatory methods and some small
group work.

See more about this topic:

[Diversity-talk] Feedback - Open Gender Monologues & Gender and Diversity chat SOTM 2018

2018-07-30 Thread Heather Leson
Hi folks,

The Open Gender Monologues had a great chat with some tips and tactics to
improve participation and healthy engagement. Great to hear some positive
experiences too.

We also co-hosted a session at the SOTM with Geochicas plus Kate and I.

In this session, we asked the participants to give input in how to be more
supportive. They made statements "I will" "We should stop" and "we should
start/continue". People wrote their ideas/thoughts on sticky notes (in
private) then we added them to the charts.

https://pads.ccc.de/WXSlyAqS8t

Celine, Kate and I will work to blog this. Joost will be sharing with the
community Birds of a feather today too.

Back to it.

Re: [Diversity-talk] Poll for next Quarterly Project (2018Q3)

2018-06-17 Thread Heather Leson
HI!

Rory, thanks for this discussion. There are 3 voters so far. It might help
to have some guidance on the types of projects and how people might
contribute. There are some new folks on this list.

For example.

Topic: Women's health facilities
Wiki page:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tagging_in_Support_of_Women_and_Girls
and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Diversity

Goals: can you look in your neighbourhood and be sure that these are
tagged?

[Diversity-talk] Share your story - Open Gender Monologues

2018-06-11 Thread Heather Leson
Hey

Open Gender Monologues is coming to SOTM. We need your help. Kate and I
will host a session at SOTM to prompt a safe dialogue about gender
experiences in OSM. We will ask people to share their stories, then share
with you (some anonymous). Then, we will aim to join up the in person
conversation with this community list for next steps.

*Survey link: http://bit.ly/OpenGenderOSM <http://bit.ly/OpenGenderOSM>*

For SOTM, we will need some helpers to support and share the stories.
Please do get in touch .

*More details:*
Open Heroines will host a session at the State of Map - Milan (July 28 -
30, 2018) This session will not be like any usual panel. We want to raise
awareness of the struggles and successes of women and LGBTQ in the
OpenStreetMap community - using their own words and experiences. Open
Heroines is a global community supporting diversity in open communities. We
share voices of women in open government, open data and civic tech.

*About SOTM - *https://2018.stateofthemap.org/
*About OSM - *https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page
*About Open Heroines *- https://openheroines.org/
*What is the Open Gender Monologues - *
https://openheroines.org/opengender-monologues-a-tool-for-more-dialogues-dad5e4fe369c

*The session in the SOTM Schedule: *
https://2018.stateofthemap.org/2018/W009-Open_Gender_Monologues/

*How will we do it?*
Using this form, you can share with us your anecdotes - short stories of
your struggles or success in the field, told from the perspective of women
and LGBTQ. Since we know this can be very sensitive, we also welcome you to
submit these experiences anonymously. We will share the some of these
stories on our OSM diaries before SOTM and will read some in our session.
They can be read by the person who submits, or they can be read on your
behalf - anonymously or with attribution as desired. We encourage you to
respond in the language that makes you comfortable. We will work with you
or the wider community to help support translation. We respect your privacy
and will do the utmost to translate content and maintain your
confidentially pending your submission.

*What happens next?*
We seek people's input in how we might address or take the next steps to
support more diversity. The in person content and suggestions will continue
on the Diversity Mailing list.

*Timelines*
We will leave this open for about 1 month:

Submissions open: June 11, 2018
Submissions close (to be shared at SOTM): July 16, 2018
SOTM Diary posts week of July 23, 2018
SOTM session - Open Gender Monologues July 28, 2018
Report back via the Diversity list by August 15th, 2018

We welcome sharing this survey far and wide in the OSM community -
http://bit.ly/OpenGenderOSM

Thank you for contributions and support!
