Absolutely, job postings are an important part of any community, and I
think it's awesome the mods allow job postings on the board.

All the questions you listed are a great start, even if it's just an info
dump of "we use X, X, X, X, X", at least you have an idea of the scope.

To take it a step further, the specs from Soundcloud would make a good
template;
http://soundcloud.com/jobs/2013-06-18-engineer-systems-san-francisco-united-states

The spec should just be informative instead of cagey, avoiding cringe
phrases like "working on cloud team".

In hindsight I should have given the OP some better guidance in my last
email, thanks for picking this up Fred!

Re: Python / Django Web Applications Developer - Michigan $90-$100/hr

2014-02-10 Thread Fred Stluka

Leigh,

If it helps, here's a list of questions you might want to answer in
your initial post of each position you are trying to fill:
- Brief description of the company, what it does, what the
   work environment is like, etc?
- Brief description of the responsibilities of the position you
   are trying to fill?
- Technologies used and skills needed?
- Consultant or FTE?
- Full time or part time?
- How long is the initial contract?
- How long is the project likely to run?
- Approx salary or hourly rate offered?
- Location, and is telecommute an option?

Cal, if Leigh posts only once for each position, and always
includes all of the above info, are you happy with that? If not,
what additional info would you suggest?

I'm a programmer, not a recruiter, but I know a lot of people,
so I get asked often by friends to help them fill positions. I
always insist on specific answers to all of the above before I
agree to do a mailing to any of my lists of hundreds of local
developers. This has kept my subscribers happy.

OK - that seems more than fair.

It is - as long as the jobs are relevant.

It's not, however, a spam list for recruiters. If a recruiter starts
posting non-Django jobs, or starts posting jobs without providing details
necessary to a list with a global audience (like "where the job is located"
and "is telecommuting acceptable"), they're going to get banned very
quickly.

Right - so that a general django developer...

Well, that's a bit worrying, mixing Java with Python is never fun or
pleasant.

> great interest in user experience and usability

So, erm, you're also after a front end developer/designer.

> scaleable web development experience

*and* a sysadmin.

And you're after 1 temporary person for a fairly lax salary to do (at
least) 2 peoples jobs. I'd be suprised if you got many applicants that
could actually fulfil your "requirements" for what you're offerering vs
what you expect.

(also, this is not, as far as I'm aware, a jobs list.)

Thanks,
