It still hasn't been determined if this is confirmed to be a Devuan
issue or not, so Firefox needs to be ruled out.

No it's not supposed to be a solution, it's just information-gathering.

Welcome to software testing; yes, we turn things off then on again.

I'd agree, but then the profile has to be deleted after and I didn't
want to bother checking to see if manager does that correctly.

It's even more easy: Just start firefox with the "--ProfileManager"
option and create a new user profile.

Isn't it more likely that part of Firefox needs to be paged in, and the
local disk is slow? I see this on a few systems, once in a while.

This is what I would call a "Microsoft Windows 95 approach": if it
does not work, uninstall it, reboot, reinstall it, light a candle
beside your screen, fiddle with the system registry, reboot again,
jump on one foot, pull the plug, cross your fingers, boot again,

Is this really a solution? Then the most principled approach is
probably to stop using Firefox altogether. Seriously, we are not
forced to swallow any crap they want to shovel down our throat. In the
quest to beat IE and then to chase up Chrome, Firefox has become a
*hog*, which is able to do a thousand and more different things (in
most cases quite badly), and also happens to render HTML pages every
now and then.

I have been quite happy with surf lately. I only need firefox for the
rare case in which I need to access a few javascript-intensive
(crappy) websites for work reasons. And I am actively looking for an
alternative there.

Computing does not need to be like that. Things can still be done
properly.

b) uBlock Origin

Don't know what is hardcoded where, the 500 default prio maybe. Besides that

Hi All,

I am lately noticing that while typing on youtube to post my comments
the types letters take several seconds to become visible. I comment on

I am using ASCII and firefox version 52.7.3.

Does anyone know of anything that can tame Firefox not to gobble all
my CPU's cycles just to display some letters?

Yeah, thanks - I was just wondering where this default is defined, if not in
/etc/apt/preferences[.d/], as I have nothing there but my custom prefs

You can change that in /etc/apt/preference with pinning.

Hi Florian,

it's determined in the repo config, and apt acquires this in formation
from the Release files. In particular, if the following fields are
present in the Release file of a suite:

  NotAutomatic: yes
  ButAutomaticUpgrades: yes

then apt will assign to the corresponding suite a lower priority (the
default is 100). NotAutomatic prevents the suite from shadowing
packages in other suites with higher priority (e.g., ascii is by
default at 500), while ButAutomaticUpgrades will allow upgrades to
already-installed packages from the suite to be pulled-in if
necessary.

The only way to change the priority of a suite in your local
installation is via a pin.

Hallo Lars,

in the meantime i remembered that there is also aptitude, which is able
to solve such dependency problems on its own. Just run

$ aptitude install =

Pinning should not be needed any more, since the *-backports suites
are at prio 100 by default (it was not like that in the past though, I
know...) while $codename. $codename-updates and $codename-security are
at prio 500.

Not sure if you are aware that your system tries to pull the package
from the "backports" repo... To avoid that, I have ascii-backports
pinned with a priority of 150 and (a dry run of)

$ apt-get -s install nvidia-driver

reports no problems.

If you really want to have the "backports" version, in the worst case,
you'll have to specify the needed version for every package in the
dependency chain, like

$ apt-get install = = [...]

To find the available versions of all the packages, just run

$ apt-cache show   [...] | grep -e ^Package -e ^Version

As a workaround, there's the possibility to temporarily comment out all
other repositories in your sources.list and run "apt-get update" before
installing the driver.

Florian
