just to confirm that ConsoleKit2 packages are now in experimental. The
package is still called "consolekit", and the relevant version is
1.2.1-1~exp1.

Thanks a lot to Hleb Valoshka for contributing the package.

The package is installable without problems in ascii as well as in
ceres.

As usual, please keep in mind that packages in experimental might have
problems, so use experimental if you know how to get out of the mud,
should you get in there...

ck2 is not there still because you decided to go with the
pristine-tar, instead of using git tags for upstream versions, which
is the recommended way to go ;)

I will give it a try later, and see what happens.

This should be impossible.  When did this happen exactly? Could you
please send a full apt log? You must never use
"allowinsecurerepositories" with Devuan repos.

Sorry, didn't see that the package is already in git.devuan.org. I checked
it out and rebuild it without the elogind Conflict. i can install it in
parallel. I have made a short test:

- lightdm + KDE5: Sessions shows up in logind but not in consolekit
- textlogin: Sessions shows up in both

I think consolekit is handled by lightdm itself, without pam module. Maybe
it has some integrated logic which disables consolekit upond detecting
something else.

    What I understand from your discussion is that consolekit and 
logind are doing the same thing and stepping on each others feet. 
Gentoo's consolekit wiki tells the following:


*ConsoleKit* is a framework for defining and tracking users, login 
sessions, and seats. ConsoleKit's primary function is to support 
multi-user setups. It also works for a single user, but offers no 
benefits compared to existing methods.


ConsoleKit is a D-Bus daemon and creates for each PAM session its own 
session. All applications in that session can make use of the 
permissions granted to this session. ConsoleKit determines if the 
session is local (created by a local user in contrast to users logged 
in over the network), and if the session is active (meaning it's the 
most recent session). Based on these distinctions, ConsoleKit assigns 
device file permissions (e.g. for audio, video and more) to the 
session. Other software like polkit  also make use of these distinctions



 According to this wiki, the role of consolekit (and/or logind) is 
to make a distinction between local and remote sessions, to grant more 
permissions to the first (which seems futile). But why do we need both 
logind/consolekit and polkit ?


    I understand udisks asks the permission (through PAM)to either 
logind or consolekit for mounting removable disks, which is a 
priviledged operation. I'm not sure how pmount does, but, on my Ascii 
install, udisks fails on mmcblk0p1 while pmount succeeds.

Quite strange, but even systemd has the following pam config (only
relevant part):
Session:
optionalpam_systemd.so

while ck has:
Session-Final:
optionalpam_ck_connector.so nox11

So unlike with CK, pam module for (e)login should be enabled unconditionally.

Yes we have to figure out if any of the DM works without the pam stuff, but
there are people who use terminal sessions :-) And for them, enabling the
module will break consolekit. So an example, when elogin pam is not enabled
the following works with devuan if consolekit and udisks is installed:

1) login
2) plug in usb stick
3) udisksctl mount 

But when enabling pam elogind you will get:
1) login
2) plug in usb stick
3) udisksctl mount
   

Which is because when the elogin pam module is enabled, consolekit does not list
the session anymore, so activating it effectively breaks consolekit. I don't
know why this happens. I need to try with consolekit2, maybe this is fixee
already. Original consolekit is pretty old stuff. Btw. did you put the
consolekit2 package somewhere already?

Tomorrow, I'll provide a lists of steps what to test with elogind so we can 
check what
is working and what not.

Afaik pam module is required only for terminal sessions, for DM it
usually isn't required unless your DM doesn't support it directly, but
as elogind is a replacement for logind it should be supported by any
DM which supports logind.

In current default configuration, the elogind package will just install 
all the libraries and start the daemon. But the pam module is not 
enabled. With that combination I was able to install and use gnome-session
with USB mounting and Shutdown/Reboot. But with this configuration,
elogind is practically disabled, because it does not know about the 
session. (I have also installed consolekit, which takes care of these tasks.
Fun fact: although gnome-sessions requires logind, it also works without
having it really enabled. So why depend on it? :-)

When elogind pam module is enabled, the session is correctly registered
with elogind. This can be done by following steps:

- invoke "sudo pam-auth-update' and enable elogind
- log out and log in again
- invoke 'loginctl', the session should be listed

But now, at least for my system, neither USB mounting nor Shutdown/Reboot
buttons work. I think this is because the session is not known by consolekit 
anymore, so enabling elogind pam breaks consolekit sessions. This is the
first thing to investigate. I don't know the reason for this, yet. Maybe the
situation improves when using consolekit2, maybe consolekit and
elogind can not be used at the same time. (Until now i thought they are
'orthogonal' to each other)

So testing should focus on (preferably with both of the configurations
elogind fully enabled and only installed):

- Mounting devices as user, shutdown/reboot/suspend
- Functionallity of Gnome and other X sessions (I'm on KDE mainly)

Nevertheless there is more to do:

- Rebuild udisks2 with logind support should fix the mounting issue because
  udisk could ask logind for permissions then. Maybe this breaks consolekit?

- figure out how Shutdown/Reboot can be fixed with logind, maybe upower is
  the solution.

I installed the package from ascii-proposed in an ascii VM without any 
problems. However, how would one go about actually testing it?  The 
system uses lightdm as the DM and XFCE as DE, but not much in terms of 
bells and whistles. Think of it as a radically stripped down version of 
my actual desktop kitchen-sink: 907 vs. 3146 installed packages. 

Any hints or directions what packages or functionalities could be tried 
out to give elogind a spin?

as recently discussed, our Andreas Messer has worked on packaging
elogind in the last few days. elogind is a replacement for the
"logind" systemd component, maintained by the Gentoo folks, and should
in theory allow packages which need libpam-systemd and logind services
to be installed on Devuan without problems (and without requiring
libpam-systemd itself)

The package is now available in Devuan in "ascii-proposed" and
"experimental". Please test it extensively and report any issue on
bugs.devuan.org.

@Andreas: please indicate if there are specific things/combintions to
be tested.

@Adam Borowski: The version in experimental could in theory be
proposed for inclusion in Debian.
