Re: [Dorset] The future of family history digital recordings?

2024-04-22 Thread Alex

If I may echo Ralph, don't do anything to the originals. If you decide to mark
up the image in any way make sure you do it on a copy.

For people who turn up regularly in photos another tedious option would be to
make a rogue's gallery of the usual suspects: have a folder of cropped images
of individuals (again from copies) each named appropriately, so whoever comes
after has a clear visual reference of who is who.

Amazing. How many proprietary systems are routinely hacked with very little
said about it? Then you get something like this that only *nearly* succeeded,
and got fixed very quickly, and and it's all "oh no! Open source is not secure!"

But I guess that's to be expected from mainstream media...

That should be interesting. Been playing with those features recently, and they
aren't quite as polished as they could be just yet. I expect things will break
a lot. ;)

It's been a while since I looked into different matrix clients, but Element is
probably still the most functional, and the browser client is probably the
least painful for the widgets they will be using for the conference.

Hi Tim,

If FTP is still giving you a headache, you could use SCP or SVN/GIT
revision control to roll out your changes to the server?

I am guessing this is a user or group permission problem, at the

(std user) is a member of the group web.  What permission should I change the
folders and user to to get ftp access to the /var/www/myfolder (I am asking as
I don't want to randomly start changing permission and cock it up).

This web server is not public facing

Re: [Dorset] Network analysis tools

2010-11-11 Thread Alex Ross
You can do some really cool stuff with http://www.backtrack-linux.org/.

It provides all sorts of tools for network analysis, although some of
the tools are quite scary! at what they can do.

I did a project at university on dsniff password sniffer - sat that on
my home network plugged into the uplink port on the router was v.
scary.

My dissertation was extending Snort (intrusion/detection) with Perl!

As was mentioned, Wireshark was/is a tremendous tool and all the better

Wireshark also does a display like that shown for Etherape.

So -  I take it you were writing Network analysis tools for X.25 at
Plessey while I was working on the network management software for the

Tektronix box that also did that?

I second Robert, it actually seems to be puppy thats getting in the way.

Maybe you could suggest he tries installing it on Ubuntu/Debian server?

There are lots of walkthrough's available.

Isn't running the windows squeezebox on wine kind of defeat the object? :P

Even on Windows, he goes for minimalist installations when he can.

 Apparenly puppy has a linux-firewall -

Checking the Puppy 5 livecd it seems to be under Menu - Network -
 Linux-Firewall Firewall

Catchy name I know. Its not a pretty app. but it does seem logical enough.

Thanks, I'll pass this on.  I presume that using this it will be fairly
obvious what to do?  Googling around, it seems there's a wizard, but that
doesn't mean that it's easy to use.

2010-05-10 Thread Alex Ross
Hi Everyone,

I'm moving down to Dorset (Spetisbury) with my partner in July from
Bristol (LUG/Perl Monger) and just wanted to pop in and say hi! I'm
just about to finish my degree in BSc Forensic Computing at UWE and I
will be working in Poole with a sailing company doing website/server
administering things!

Anyway I'm looking forward to meeting with all of you soon,

If you're moving to Spetisbury, then Blandford Meetings will be tailor made
for you! Unfortunately you will have missed tomorrow's meeting.

That is a shame!

I don't mind coming to meet in either Bournemouth or Dorchester (it does say
you meet monthly on the lug site).

Anyway I'm looking forward to meeting with all of you soon,

We look forward to it. Welcome to Dorset and the DLUG.
