[Dorset] File type question

2015-03-16 Thread Clive Wills

Hi all

I have 2 files which only have a number similar to 149C6000 with no
extension (that I can see), files are not recognised but info is they
are a 'OLE2 compound document storage'.
Tried adding a known extension but nothing is shown that makes sense.
The only info shown when having an .xls extension, after 'Calc'
conversion, was 'root entry' in the second cell.

Any ideas to what it might be, assume it's some form of database file?

[Dorset] Up Date Re: Burning a live 'disk' Mint 17.1

2015-01-24 Thread Clive Wills

Just to up-date on this thread and close it.
I've managed to get the disk to run by 'playing' with the text menu but
do not know what I did!!
Anyway I've now up-dated the laptop with Mint 17.1 Cinnamonn and al is
well. Not able to get Digikam to work yet, it shows the splash screen
then drops out. Have uninstalled it and will try again as I think it's
missing some dependencies.
Will bring the laptop DVD to next mtg to see if we can find out what
needs altering.

This is for my information to know why it's not working properly.

Thanks for all the advice and help, see you a week on Tuesday.

Well, tried all suggestions with little return except I tried my DVD

So the DVD is a good one so why does it not work on the laptop, which
it the same drive it was burned on?
I still can't re-install the new copy of Mint until I get a DVD that
works.

Peter delivered a copy of the KDE version but I've never got on well
with KDE (could not get the wireless to work properly on the live disk).

Hi Clive,

It's the DVD text menu showing Mint 17.1 and Memcheck, so booted from
DVD. Select Mint and that's when it goes to blank screen and nothing
more happens.
Yes, but that's checking that the download successfully got the image
file onto your hard disk. By running `md5sum -c md5sums.txt' or
similar from within the DVD's directory, you'll be checking the files
are retrievable from the DVD, i.e. that the burn went well. Cheers,
Ralph.

[Dorset] Burning a live 'disk' Mint 17.1

2015-01-21 Thread Clive Wills

Hi all

I've been trying to burn a 'Live' disk/USB of Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64bit
without any luck and would like to know what I'm doing wrong. So far
have done the following:-
Downloaded The ISO image from the main web site via a UK mirror,
software is on the desktop so it's easy to find.
Used Brasero to burn image to DVD, checksum OK, rebooted laptop and
selected Mint 17.1 from boot menu, then blank screen, DVD spins a few
times but nothing happens, left for 30mins incase it was just slow. Nope.
Tried burning anyother DVD by right clicking the image and selecting
burn image, exactly same results.
Looked at DVD and it lists several directories and files, all system
connected, so it did unpack the the image. Or is this wrong?
Tried to use Unetbootin and all appeared OK but get same results when
re-booting.

What am I doing wrong, any ideas please?
Checked boot sequence and it's USB, DVD, HD. All other live disks from
mags work OK.

[Dorset] Full Root Partition

2015-01-19 Thread Clive Wills

Hi All

Just clearing out my 'Home' folder on laptop and copying it to a
separate disk all OK.
So decided to 'Back-up' the 'Home' folder onto the NAS drive using Lucky
Backup on my Mint 16 system. (Lucky Backup is a graphical front end to
Rsync) Did a verification run to check if all OK and it was; so pressed
Backup and watched it run through the Home folder, it got to within the
last few files then reported something like / file system full,
operation terminated!!

Had to run from a 'Live' disk to see what happened as the NAS drive is a
2Tb drive. It would appear that the backup was saved to the laptop's
/root partition (System partition) not the NAS! No wonder it was full
as the root partition was only 27Gb and the backup was larger than that.
Using the 'Live' disk I thought I'd removed (deleted) the backup file
from / hoping to free up space and then re-booted. Still reports system
full and looking, via Gparted, at that partition - it's still showing full?

On re-booting laptop reports quote:-
MDM could not write a new authorisation entry to disk. Possibly out of
diskspace. Error: No space left on device.

Terminal quote then carries on with:-
[ 54.4015821 sd 6:o:o:o: [sdb] Asking for cache data failed.
[ 54.4016501 sd 6:o:o:o: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through.
[ 106.1986421 sd 6:o:o:o: [sdb] Asking for cache data failed.

This then carries on and nothing can be done.

Why does it not accept that the large file has been deleted and still
shows partition full?
How can I recover that partitions empty space? and get entry to the
system. I thought that deleting the file from a live system would have
given enough space back to carry on booting in.

[Dorset] BIOS bleep codes?

2014-07-10 Thread Clive Wills
My brother's laptop (Dell Inspiron) fails to boot and gives 7 bleeps,
can anyone explain what these bleeps mean please. I know they are a
code indicating a fault, but what?
He is confused as 'Googling' it produces different answers, one of which
is a CPU fault. Any help would be appreciated and if it's repairable.
I shall be seeing him tomorrow morning (Friday) if anyone can reply
tonight, many thanks.

Re: [Dorset] DLUG Mtg and my network problem.

2014-03-03 Thread Clive Wills

Hi All

I may not make tomorrows meeting as I have another meeting starting at
6pm, don't know how long it will go on for.

If I'm not there could anyone living within Wimborne area and has a good
knowledge of networking, and would be willing to visit me to help sort
out my network problem please get in touch off list.

As Terry suggested (last meeting) I found a GUI front end for SAMBA but
did not understand some terminology used. I think I may need to start
from scratch again but that would be very time consuming for me and I
still would not know what was being asked for!

For info I have a Netgear dual band router, 2x1Gb NAS (Netgear Duo V2),
Print server, desktop and a laptop computer (both Linux) and finally a
new Panasonic 'smart' TV. It all works individually but I can not get
them all to 'talk' to each other. E.g. can't see any pictures on TV from
the backup HD, nor can I get to any files on the other computers. Tv
gets onto Web OK via wireless router.
Not affecting the above but my Back-up HD has just stopped working so
'lost' all old info, think it's a relay not switching the HD on. (this
was connected directly to the routers USB ).

Have not put anything on the list as I'm not sure how to describe the
problems and provide the technical info, nor do I know what is causing
the problem. Something (Samba?) keeps asking for a Workgroup password
but none of the ones I give it are correct and I'm going round in circles.

I really wanted to ask 'face to face' at the meeting as it's so long
winded trying to explain what's wrong in words.

Hope I do get to the pub tomorrow.

[Dorset] Last Nights meeting

2013-11-06 Thread Clive Wills

Interesting meeting with 11 or 12 attending in the 'snug'.
Ralph helped me out with two problems on my new laptop, one of which we
did not find the answer too but he gave me a work-around.
I'll leave Ralph to explain the details as it was Printing window box
displaying above all other windows, which the 'system' said was not there!
The other was trying to get a .wav sound to play in Thunderbird as the
'mail received' alert. The file would play normally directly from the
folder at normal level, but was very very quiet in Tbird (could hardly
hear it above the others talking and pub music playing. Even at home in
the quiet you had a job hearing it).
This morning I've fixed the problem! Looking at default settings I found
by trial that changing the on-board sound from 'audio stereo' to 'audio
stereo duplex' and upping the default sound to 3/4 scale it all worked.
I'd missed the adjustment as I'd been looking in another settings app.

Thanks Ralph for your help.
Unfortunately I missed all the other topics, so over to you for updates.

[Dorset] Laptop advice please

2013-08-14 Thread Clive Wills

Hi All

Last night my laptop cover/screen broke again for the second time at the
hinge. (Dell Inspiron 1525) It cost over £80 to repair last time and the
same has happened this time, it looks as if the hinge puts a strain on
the cover. As the laptop is getting old I'm thinking of a new one but
what to get? Intel i3 with 300-500Gb drive, good screen and either HDMI
or VGA output for the projector, SD card slot and Intel wireless N.
I use it as my main PC, nothing special requiring speed or high graphics
other than camera pictures, (minor improvements, cropping and aperture
adjustments).
Price range £200-£400 and wondered about a Tablet but it must have a
keyboard, I can't get on with 'on screen' ones (Paul's Asus Transformer
looked good but not now available).

Does anyone know what to avoid as some of the specs I'm not sure on as
it will only be running Linux (do not want M$!!!). It needs to run
LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, and Digikam; I'm on Mint 14 cinnamon
at moment.
Keen on NovaTec as it's local (Portsmouth) and they give good service
but don't know anything about Linux. HP, Acer and Asus seem to be OK but
have heard of some problems with Linux on some models.

Any help please?

[Dorset] Moving Home partition - Re DLUG meet

2009-11-12 Thread Clive Wills
Hi All

Problem has arisen from moving/copying /Home info.
New PC is up and running but problem is I have not managed to 'copy'
across my /home area from the laptop.
Ralph suggested the following but I'm having problem:

On laptop:
cd / - gets me up one level to the / area OK.
sudo tar cvf /home /media/disk/home.tar

Not working - reports :- tar: home: cannot open. Is a directory.
tar: Error is not recoverable.

Now I'm in root, /home is the directory below, required. OK.
/media/disk/ is the 8Gb USB stick - checked what it's called by Laptop
so should be OK. home.tar is the file to be generated on the stick,
correct? Also tried /media/sdb1/ but that did not work either.

What am I doing wrong as tried other combinations, still no good.
Can't copy in a gui as it reports authorised user (can't put 'sudo'
into the gui.

Help please!!

Clive

[Dorset] Info please on print servers.

2009-10-04 Thread Clive Wills
Hi all

Does anyone know if the following Print Server(s) works 'out of the box'
or easily with Ubuntu 9.04 please.

Edimax PS 3207U or PS 1206P.

I am trying to connect both my HPLJ 5P laser printer (parallel) and the
Canon Colour i950 printer (USB) to the ADSL Router so that both laptops
and desk PC can have access (mixed Linux/XP systems).
I also have a HP PSC 1317 (USB) multi function inkjet which it would be
nice to have connected occasionally.

I believe the PS 3207U has 1=parallel and 2 USB inputs with ethernet output.

Could I also connect my Canon Lide 50 scanner to this (PS 3207U)? Would
it work?

Any comments would be appreciated please.

Clive

[Dorset] Bournemouth Meetings - locations

2009-05-10 Thread Clive Wills
Hi All

At previous meetings in Bournemouth we have talked about finding a new
place to meet with WiFi available.
My daughter-in-law works in a local pub which has just put in WiFi and
she has also found another place which also has Wifi.
I have not tried either place out and am not sure that either would be
suitable, especially for those using public transport. However they may
be OK for occasional use as 'Workshop' locations. I believe rooms are
available but would cost.
If anyone can check them out (as I've yet to connect to any location
other than home); they are:-

The Kings Arms, Longham
and
Citybreaks, Longham (previously known as Bridgehouse hotel close to
Longham bridge)

For practical purposes public transport is non-existant.

Any other ideas or locations?

Clive
