Re: [Dorset] Using ZOOM on Linus

2020-03-26 Thread David Wilkinson
I used Zoom on Ubuntu MATE 18.04 the other week, It was a support call
with a vendor so didn't use a webcam but voice and screenshare was ok.

I used the deb file from the Zoom site.
There is also the option of running Zoom within the browser which should
be fine for voice and video, while the browser only version allowed me
to show my screen, they couldn't control it which is why I went to the
.deb install.

I assume Zoom has a non-Free software license. (Free as in freedom.)

Because of that, I think the "wrapper only" comment probably means the
package only contains code that grabs the software from elsewhere,
rather than including the software in the package itself.

The same thing that's often done with other packages, like Adobe Flash
and the Microsoft core fonts for the Web, as a workaround for
restrictions on distribution.

I can't say whether it works or not, as I've never come across it
before.

I would probably try the .deb directly from their download page. It
claims compatibility with Linux Mint 17.1+.

To cut a long story short, after multiple experiments and conversations with

haven't connected the Pi to the network yet (the first thing I did yesterday
was to remove it, with no effect).
I'm surprised the ISP blamed the cable when only one site had an issue.
I can't think of how they came that conclusion.
Maybe they thought the cable had became sentient and look a dislike to
raspberrypi.org :)

Can anyone think of any reason for this event? Is it possible that the Pi
caused this? Does Cat 5 stop carrying Ethernet packets in hot weather :-)
This last question is only partially serious, but the cable does run around
the outside of the house.

I haven't come across any issues with hot weather and and ethernet
cables, $previousdayjob had cables outside for a wireless install and
hot weather didn't seem both them. The wet weather however did, although
that was due to them not using external CAT5 cable and it allowed water
to get in and run down the cable to the switch, causing them to replace
the cables with external rated cable.
If the weather was hot enough to melt the cables then I would expect it
to stop working completely or have packet loss due to errors across the
board rather than stopping a single site from working.

The issue looks to be that DNSSEC was removed from raspberrypi.org, the
signed records were removed from the raspberrypi.org name servers before
.org's servers stopped telling everyone that the zone was signed and
before the cached records expired. (
https://twitter.com/Mythic_Beasts/status/1011827917960155136 ) This
caused raspberrypi.org to fail DNSSEC validation and your resolver would
have been returning a servfail.

Assuming the cached records have expired by now, it should be working again.

Hi Terry,

I have a powered USB hub you could borrow if you are still in need of one.
It reports to be 3A and was used to power a Pi and some USB bitcoin miners.

No idea if it will back feed a Pi as I powered the Pi from one of the
"Fast Charge" USB ports on the hub.

I'm having a problem with the Wimborne Model Town hardware. I am using one of
these
with a Pi Zero:

https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi/accessories/usb-hubs/hackable-naked-7-port-usb-hub-uk-5v-2.5a/?search=Hac[1]

It comes with a 2.5 A supply and is supposed to be able to back-power the Pi.
The trouble
is that it works when I power-up the Pi with only the mouse and keyboard
attached and
then attach the other peripherals one by one (three USB Audio Adaptors and a
WiFi
dongle). It crashes the Pi if I try to boot with said devices all attached.

I have run some tests on the PSU brick which comes with this and found that
with a 2 Ohm
load, I only get 2 A or so and the terminal voltage drops to 4.8 V. We could
power the Pi
separately, but that adds to the cost and needs a separate mains outlet.

However, before I ask for a refund, I'd like to remove this Hub from the
equation. I get a
similar problem when I use an unpowered hub, but I would expect that, since the
WiFi
Adaptor takes 240 mA and each of the Audio Adaptors takes another 170 mA (and
that's
steady state; the inrush current is going to be higher).

If I can prove that my peripherals aren't causing the problem, I'd be inclined
to go for one
of these:

Hi Tim,

I suspect it is because you have the protocol as ALL, There are more
protocols than TCP and UDP.
You would need to create a rule for TCP and one for UDP if you want to
open the port for both.

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 3977 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 3977 -j ACCEPT

Failing that you could use
--destination-port
instead of dport.

replying to a message by me).

Maybe the list logic has changed recently, but for all of the time I've been
on this list (nearly 15 years), I've only ever clicked 'Reply' and the list
bot forwards my message to everyone on the list. If you click 'Reply to All',
I think it sends to both the list and the original poster.

I always spot this because normal messages to the list have the list address
in the 'To' field and are therefore automatically filtered by my mail client
into the DLUG folder. Messages that don't go via the list remain in my Inbox.

So is this a misunderstanding on the part of some users or has the list
behaviour changed?

I think the behaviour of the list has changed. Looking at older emails
the reply-to header used to be the list email address

Reply-To: Dorset Linux User Group dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk

Now it seems to be set to the sender's email address

So now when you hit reply it doesn't go to the list as it once did,
which is why I think people are using reply to all.

Thunderbird seems to detect the list and gives a reply to list option.

IPv6 is been rolled out on quite a few networks, I think the main
problem is end user ISP's not rolling out, if more did then we would see
more Consumer grade routers get updates to support it.

Mine does, Cisco 877W

looks like OpenWRT based routers will support it if your router supports
OpenWRT or its derivatives

I would think most routers will need a firmware update to support ipv6

PuTTY won't help the X window from your client on the SparcStation

You still need an X server like Xming on the windows PC, the X11
forwarding can be done with PuTTY.

I have Xming on my Windows PC and when I SSH to a linux server/desktop
using PuTTY with the X11 forwarding enabled it works fine.

I have no idea if this would work with SparcStation.

Re: [Dorset] networking problem - can anyone help ?

2010-05-20 Thread David Wilkinson

I have a Draytec router connected to my ISP : ip range 192.168.1.x
Attached internally ie Lan, is a Linksys Wireless router - which reports that
 its IP address is 192.168.1.10

When I connect any machine using wireless the IP address is 192.168.2.x

So I have bought an HP wireless printer:
Its assigned IP: is in the 192.168.2.x range

Now if I use a computer connected via wireless - I can see this printer and
 use it.
BUT for the Lan machines I cannot - they are in range 192.168.1.x

I have tried setting a route on the Lan machine -
 route add 192.168.2.x gw 192.168.1.10

 BUT it does not appear

So what have I missed here ?

When you say does not appear, do you mean in some sort of automated
setup tool?, if so it wont work as I believe they work by sending out
broadcast packets and seeing if the printer responds, however the
broadcast packet will not transverse IP ranges (broadcast domains).

Are you able to ping the printer or get to the printers web panel if it
has one? if then the current setup isn't working and you be able to
print even if you put the printers IP address in when setting up the
printer on your machine.

You might be able to add static routes on the routers instead of the
client machines to route between the 2 IP ranges. then this mean it
wouldn't matter if the machine moved from wireless to lan as it should
still be able to get to the printer

The best solution would be to disable DCHP on the linksys router and
turn in to just an access point (I think you might also have make it act
as bridge, I am not sure how this would be done on the linksys wireless
router, but we have done it at work with some netgear wireless routers)
then the linksys router will just pass the wireless traffic on to the
lan and from the lan back to the wireless clients without modifying it.
It would be a Layer 2 device if you know your OSI model
this would then allow both the wireless machines and lan machines to be
on the same range (192.168.1.1)
While I am not sure of how to do this on a linksys router if you let me
know the model number I could have a look at the manual and see if I can
work it out.

I don't think this wouldn't be ideal in case of needing to reinstall,
etc so was wondering what people normally use for their partition layout.

Regards

David

Yes I too Would be intrested in a tour of C4l!

What sort of times would we be looking at a tour? weekday evenings or
weekends if its posible may be better.

How about the date of the date of the next Bournemouth meet? Which I
believe is Wednesday 2nd June.
The tour would last about an hour which includes the tour of the
facilities and a short presentation about C4L.

For transport to C4L there is an on site car park, bus stops and taxi
rank close by. The bus's which I know go past are M1, M2. Looking at
bybus.co.uk bus's 1b, 1c and 18 go past well.

Here is a link to google maps showing the car park and bus stops

At a guess if you installed/updated and removed a lot of programs, it
would have been windows side-by-side
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Side-by-side_assembly) I had a 50GB
partition for my Vista install on my gaming rig and I installed
everything on my D drive so that I could reformat the OS partition with
out losing everything. I ended up running out of disk space, most of the
disk space was used by side-by-side, about 30GB if I remember right.
