Peter, I use Evolution, but only as a mail client. I will test the alarm
feature and let you know how it goes.

I set an event with an alarm for 11:30 last night. When I switched on
this morning there was no manifestation of it.

Perhaps it is something in 10.04. I am using Evolution 2.28.3

Note that I have never tried it before so I can't compare with previous
 behaviour on this computer.

I've had a look at the command line in Startup Applications Preferences
which reads

/usr/lib/evolution/2.22/evolution-alarm-notify

the 2.22 should be 2.28

Now working. I hope this helps others with the same problem.

Hi Peter,

I suspect not. There seems to be lots of people over time having the
same issue as you are. Someone comes up with a workaround that works
for them, not others, and then stops working for them even though
they're sure it did. Sounds a bit like a race condition causing the
intermittency.

Do you have Evolution start automatically every time you log in?
Perhaps try turning that off and start it manually after everything is
all settled down, say a minute. Does it ever go wrong then?

Cheers,
Ralph.
