Thanks Terry. Now that I look at that, it is hard to say what it was
that could be related. More work needed to investigate further.

I swapped disks for the Zorin disk, installed Kaffeine, and put the
firmware in /lib/firmware as on the other, and it all worked very
well. Of course the one thing that I did not do was run the updates on
Zorin.

Not sure exactly what did it.

I have removed and reinstalled kaffeine a few times.
Added extra xine bits : sudo apt-get install libxine1
libxine1-all-plugins phonon-backend-xine

following a hint from somewhere.
In the Kaffeine TV configuration I removed the 'device'. That caused a
bit of a problem because I couldn't find a way of adding a device.
Removed all the contents of home/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine - that took
some finding, and reinstalled Kaffeine and it all seems to work again.

Don't know if it's particularly relevant to your OS, but there's been
quite a lot of chatter about Kaffeine on

Was there an update to Kubuntu just before you noticed the failure? Maybe you
can get some clues if you can work out what changed.

Can you try the stick on another system? It might just be a hardware failure.
Next step is to swap out this hard disk for my Zorin one and try it
there. I do not expect it to be a fault on the stick as dmesg seems Ok
with it.

If it is software, can you try another media player, just to make sure that
the problem is Kaffeine and not something in the OS. (If this fails, check
for common libraries, in case it is caused by a change to an underlying bit of
code or something.)
--> I have just tried me-tv and it failed to start- error message is
something to do with a missing file not related to the DVB-T stick.

If all that fails, try booting from a Live Disc (probably not Kubuntu
16.04 since the latest binary may be compromised and uou would have to
install Kaffeine into the RAMDisk).

-->I would also have to find the firmware for my DVB-T stick on my
backups. But as Kaffeine did work I think it should work from the Live
Disk - if it is on it.

[Dorset] Kaffeine problems.

2016-07-06 Thread Peter Merchant
Until a few days ago, Kaffeine worked fine with my Freecom DVB-T USB
stick, Now it says 'no device found' but dmesg shows it there, and the
firmware is in it's usual place [/lib/firmware].

I notice that my version is ver 1.2.2 and apt-get tells me that this is
the latest version though the Kaffeine pages say 2.04 was released a
week or so ago.

I am not sure where to try from here, or whether and how to upgrade
kaffeine and see if that fixes it.

Any help appreciated.

I am using Kubuntu 16.04 64bit
