Pretty much worked out of the box :-) Huzzah!

Running pretty hot, and the trackpad scrolling isn't working - but that's
likely fixable with some tweakage.

Well, as far as I can see there's nothing, either morally or legally, to
stop you from firing it up with live CD of some description to see
what's what in terms of compatibility. As long as you are careful with
the packaging (a) who's to know and (b) what harm's done if you find
it's a complete 'mare and opt to return it?

That said I very much doubt that it wll present any insurmountable
issues; it's been a long time since I bought a bit of kit that was
completely unsupported or unusable with Linux.

Hope it works out, anyway.

It would have to be a live USB stick; Netbooks don't have CD drives :-)

I didn't mention it before, but I think that Novatech's Customer Service is
second to none, so I don't think there would be any issue there.

I've bought loads of stuff from them and, on occasion, had to return some for
one reason or another.

Years ago I bought a motherboard, CPU and memory from them and found that it
had problems that I could only put down to flaky memory. I can't remember the
details, but I took it back to them and even though they couldn't find
anything wrong with it, they refunded my money.

When I bought the Netbook, it had a rather quiet Mic. I took it back and they
replaced it, even though it worked OK for them (it may have been a Linux
Driver issue at the time, because the replacement was a bit quiet too,
although it seems OK these days.

Even more recently, I bought a Draytech router, which worked fine for around
10-15 hrs, then it went slow. There was no question of repair or replacement
being the only option; they refunded the money immediately because they didn't
have another in stock. I think that even if they'd had one, they would
probably have let me have a refund if I'd wanted it.

It also helps that they're less than an hour's drive away.

I'll back everything Terry said about Novatech. I visited the showroom
and tried a live disk on a desktop machine with no problem (except the
guy didn't known about 'live CD's!); bought the machine with extra HD
only to find no drive connector on main board. No problem as we went
back following week and they sorted everything out. Other equipment
bought has arrived within 3 days, one on the following day!

Re: [Dorset] Netbook recommendations? (Mark Elkins)

2011-12-02 Thread Walter Reed
I have used the Acer Aspire One Netbook for a couple of years and really enjoy
it (£150 with Linpus from Dabs)

I noted that eBuyer had some 10 netbooks for about £190  a week ago.

I have used Ubuntu -11.04 Netbook release and now have 11.10 working fine.

To me it seems such better value all  round than an expensive tablet. Not
faultless (netbook and me) but always had good support here and online.

Regards,
Walter

Had a couple of less than pleasant experiences with Acer in the past. Nice when
they worked, but getting some hardware faults fixed under warranty was a bit of
a PITA.

A tablet and netbook/laptop have very different use cases for me... ideally I'd
have both :-)

For those who are curious I ordered an N1 last night (as pointed out by Terry
Coles) - we'll see how it shapes up when it gets here.

Cheers,

Adrian
