Re: [DQSD-Users] dqsd.net webmaster?

2010-03-02 Thread Brent Beardsley
Hi all,

I think we should just have dqsd.sourceforge.net as the main page - we can see
if Dave will redirect dqsd.net back to dqsd.sourceforge.net. I changed the
home page to dqsd.sourceforge.net, uploaded the files in dqsdweb to the htdocs
for dqsd project and it seems to work. Note, I have not tried every page and
every link - also you'll have to clear your browser cache as the old index page
on the dqsd htdocs site redirects to dqsd.net

I can easily change it back to the way it was but that way wasn't working and I
like the idea of having the dsqdweb files hosted on sourceforge so that all the
admins can mess with it and avoid the problems we're currently experiencing.

Your thoughts?

Brent

Hi Tom,

I think the most pressing concern is that we seem to have lost control of
dqsd.net -- updates aren't bubbling through as they should, and we don't know
who has access to the host.

- There is a wiki (now defunct, apparently, I can't get to the pages) for
developers at SourceForge. Would a user-facing wiki be valuable?
- Feature requests can be made at SourceForge. I agree it's not as appealing as
the link you posted.

My life is busy with two small children, and I don't have all that much time to
develop DQSD, but I'd love to see it grow, too. :)

If we could get the infrastructural problems sorted, maybe we could kickstart
development again, starting with a proper 4.1 release, and then look into the
various issues we have?

- Kim

I did not need another sign to know DQSD was in trouble but no response
to my post shows that. We need to do something to keep dqsd alive, the
reality is it's slowly dying even though many of us still use it daily.

There are problems which need to be addressed, such as the load time
when a new google is done, which is often a lot slower that doing a
search in the google bar in the open browser. I still get the startup
IE error. Shawn has suggested other things in the past which would
improve things: http://bit.ly/shawndqsd and http://bit.ly/shawnxml

Some other ideas to continue the brainstorming:
 - turn dqsd.net into a wiki
 - add a proposed new feature
section (such as linking one search to different a browser, floating
toolbar, Logins with authentication code, etc) and let
people vote like on http://digsbies.org/site/wishlist
 - add a blog

Lots of people out there work on open source software, dqsd needs more
exposure to get more users for that to happen. We can start that by
linking up the buzz we already have, e.g. adding links to posts such as
David Blume's http://dblume.livejournal.com/65402.html

Tom.

Hi,

Does anyone know who runs/has control over dqsd.net? Is the domain still
David Bau's?

I am wondering as I would like to make a change on the
http://www.dqsd.net/contrib/ since a domain of mine listed there has
changed and will be expired in less than 30 days.

I am not a member of the -devel list so am just emailing this user list.

Maybe the access could be opened up and we could update the site?

Thanks, Tom.

I wonder if there are two issues:

1) redirecting to another alias/search isn't working
(first two)

2) run isn't working (the rest of them)

  I have class tonight and need to run out of here

  I see 2 things that concern me.

  1. (and this might be just because of how the
 e-mail clients word

 alias MUST start with
 //
  This includes the - line. As I look at
 what you sent I see
 several

 an e-mail word wrap
  issue). What you should do is make sure all your
 non-alias lines start
 with
  //

  2. I see some aliases with %s and some with %s.
 I think the quotes are
  wrong and should be dropped and they should just
 be %s
  Example:

  gm|gg /maps %s

  should be

  gm|gg /maps %s

  Try these ideas and let me know. Don't forget to
 reload DQSD when you try

 after class tonight, if I
 get
  home early enough.

Re: [DQSD-Users] DQSD-Users Digest, Vol 7, Issue 7

2006-12-15 Thread Brent Beardsley
There's also the httpinst search but that is broken in
the released versions (3.x) because it's hitting the
cvs server which has been replaced with subversion.
This has been fixed in the source code tree. So after
updating httpinst from the source code tree you could
then do:

httpinst amaz

or whatever search you want to install.

Let me know how it works (works fine for me!) and if
no problems I'll check it in.

RE: [DQSD-Users] test Comx.xml with seattlepi (zits) support and political cartoons

2005-09-13 Thread Brent Beardsley
Yes, the first SP2 prompt is because I had to use
WScript.Shell which is an activeX control to run wget.

I assume also that you've set the wgetExe otherwise
you wouldn't be getting any SP2 prompts - am I
correct?

Can you add some alerts in at line 445 like so and
reload DQSD:

alert(test1);
var output_file = DQSDLauncher.AppDataDirectory + '\\'
+ imgkey + '.gif';
var cmd = wgetExe + '
--referer=http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/;
--output-document=' + output_file + ' ' + imgurl +
'';
alert(test2);
var shell = new ActiveXObject(WScript.Shell);
alert(test3);
shell.Run(cmd, 0, true);
alert(test4);

And tell me which alerts you see before the error
message shows up?

We can also take this off the list if you'd like.

RE: [DQSD-Users] 3.1.9.0 Final Release will not install

2004-12-27 Thread Brent Beardsley
Hi Kim, Shawn,

I wonder if it's because of line 336 in the search.nsi
script. It's trying to write something to an NT
specific key and will probably fail on a non-NT based
machine - although I don't have a machine with Win98
installed.

What if we change line 336 to:

ClearErrors

instead?

Can someone with access to a Win98 box and NSIS make
this change, recompile the installer and try it out?

 that's it.

  Hi Cate,

  Failed to write information to your registry.
 While
   installing you must be logged in as a user with
   permission to write to the registry, preferably
 an
   Administrator.  The installation will now
 abort.
   The thing is I'm running Windows 98SE. ...

  I just tried to install 3.1.9 on my son's
 computer (W98SE) and
  experienced the same problem. :(

  Looks like we made a boo-boo.

 More than one. Trying to install on Win2K Por SP4
 gives me a DOS box
 with a
 cursor hopping madly around a blank screen. I
 killed the process and
 am
 standing pat with 3.18 to you figure out what got
 hosed.

RE: [DQSD-Users] Fix for XP SP2 Problem

2004-11-18 Thread Brent Beardsley
Hi fellow DQSDers,

I already had

!-- saved from url=(0020)http://www.dqsd.net/ --

in on line 155 of search.htm v. 1.187

Since I'm not running XP I can't test this but does
Lee's changes work better that the line I had put in
there already?

Also, Kim - I think you, Glenn, and David are the only
ones that has the know-how/sourceforge permissions to
do a build.

Brent

 Hey all,

 I think mark-of-the-web is probably a good thing, if
 it stops the first
 popup blocker problem.

 The issue with the calendar is something else, I
 believe it's got something
 to do with writing stylesheets dynamically.

 It'd be great if we could work around these
 problems, so we can get a new
 release out the door, but I'm swamped with work, and
 severely lacking
 competence, so I'm counting on the rest of you.

 FWIW, the registry fix mentioned at dqsd.net must be
 applied not only to
 Explorer.exe, but also to IExplore.exe (which is a
 bit scary), or the
 calendar and other popup windows won't work.

 Cheers,
 Kim

  couldn't see

  I stumbled across DQSD a few evenings ago and
 decided to
  give it a try.
  I immediately noticed that it had a problem with
 running
  under Windows
  XP SP2. It looks to me like you are using local
 active content in a
  web browser ActiveX control in the toolbar. I
 looked at the source
  code for the control's HTML and saw that there's
 a critical line
  missing from it that's necessary in SP2 to avoid
 the
  information bar
  when running active content stored on the local
 system.
  It's commonly
  known as the Mark of the Web. You can read
 more about it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/ie/6/all/re
  skit/en-us
  /
  appendix.mspx (do a search for Mark of the Web
 once the page
  is loaded)

  Anyway, there's a trivial fix for this problem.
 Just add the
  following
  line to the file named search.htm (I found it
 in the directory in
  which DQSD was installed), just after the line
 that contains head
  (line 4 in the latest version on your web site):

  !-- saved from url=(0013)about:internet --

  That's all there is to it! I hope that this
 isn't something you
  already knew about, because I didn't have time to
 go through all the
  messages in your mailing list archives. A quick
 glance led me to
  believe that you were approaching a fix by
 messing with the registry.

RE: [DQSD-Users] Fix for XP SP2 Problem

2004-11-18 Thread Brent Beardsley
I too use the calendar quite frequently and would hate
to see it missing. I also don't think we should have
two separate builds. Is it that big of a pain to
click on the toolbar and say allow it in WinXP? It's
only once when it starts up right?

Brent

--- Monty Scroggins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

  Opinions? What's more important - new release or
 new release working with
  SP2?

  Kim

 Thats kind of a dilemma. I had committed the recent
 mod to search.htm the
 other day.  We can:

 1. Wait for a workaround for the calendar issue (has
 anyone tried the comx
 or racetv searches which spawn an extra window to
 see if these searches
 function with the change??) Kim I think I remember
 you had tried them
 before, and they were ok.. I dont have those
 searches in place yet since
 I am rebuilding my machine.

 2. Deploy with the current change for SP2 and with a
 calendar that doesn't
 work.

 3. Back out the recent change and deploy a release
 which still has the sp2
 issues, and re-deploy later if an sp2 workaround
 surfaces.

 4. remove the calendar and deploy with the current
 sp2 (assuming the
 calendar is the only sp2 issue). I dont know how
 hard this would be..  I
 assume all the cal code can be left in but the
 binding to right-click
 could be removed.

 Does anyone have any ideas on the calendar issue? I
 do use the calendar
 and would hate to see it go.. but it is probably the
 hanging point to a
 new release..

 My order of preference would be:
 3,1,4,2

 My $.02 FWIW..

 Monty

Re: [DQSD-Users] Update to A9 for generic use

2004-04-20 Thread Brent Beardsley
Hi Gregory,

Do you need to have 2 forms when all you're doing is a
simple get? You could just call openSearchWindow with
either generic.a9.com/query or a9.com/query?

Just wondering,

Brent

Re: [DQSD-Users] Can a search write a file?

2004-03-04 Thread Brent Beardsley
I think the function Monty is talking about
(writeFile)
has two important limitations - it only works on text
files and it only writes out files within the DQSD
installation directory.

You can try playing with writeFile function (found in
tools.js) and see if it will work.

  automaticaly save its content to a file in the
 same way that I might do
  myself, with a right-click and save picture as.
 In fact I should like to
  open several at once and save them all...

 hmm automatically I dont know... There are
 functions to write to a file,
 the history for example is written to a file. You
 might have to dig around
 the js files to find the functions and see how they
 are called...

 If you want to manually save the images you can take
 out galleryimg='no'
 from line 414 in your local copy of the search.
 This will enable the little
 imagetoolbar that will popup when a single comic is
 solicited. The image
 toolbar that pops up in the top left corner of the
 graphic when the mouse is
 over the image, has four icons, one of them is to
 save I think...

 When multiple comics are solicited at once, they are
 displayed in normal
 windows and you can right-click the image and save
 it from there...

  And (though it may not seem related) I wonder if
 an alias can be made to
  include qualifiers, since I have not been able to
 make this work. I should
  like to make an alias like myfavoritecomics to
 mean comx /this /and
  /that.

 Hmmm aliases used to be able to do this...

 I put  comics|comx /reyn /garfield /herman|my
 comics in my
 localaliases.txt file, and reloaded the toolbar.
 It does work *but* beware
 of whitespace. I you have this -

 comics | comx /reyn /garfield /herman|my comics
 or even this -
 comics |comx /reyn /garfield /herman|my comics

 it wont work because of whitespace around the |
 delimiter...  (It should
 work if selected off the menu though).. I think
 this is a bug that should
 be fixed Until then, be careful with the
 whitespace around the
 delimiters and you should be ok.

RE: [DQSD-Users] problem settin firefox as default (even with setbrowser)

2004-02-29 Thread Brent Beardsley
Hi,

I also use Firefox with DQSD and love it. Have you
tried clicking the Set Default Browser under Tools -
Options - General to reset Firefox as the default
browser?

I also made a file called user.js in the profile
directory that contains one line:

user_pref(advanced.system.supportDDEExec, false);

which causes each search to open in a new tab.

For more information see:

http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html#prefs

Hope this helps,

Brent

Re: [DQSD-Users] Re: [DQSD-Devel] comx: additional comics request

2004-02-28 Thread Brent Beardsley
Hi Monty,

Calvin and Hobbes works now, thanks - but I also saw
that Doonesbury is mis-spelled too :)

Also you could use:

if( nullArgs(comx, q) )
return false;

instead of:

 if( q == ? ){
qsfind(comx /function);
return false;
 }
 if( q ==  ){
qsfind(comx /function);
return false;
 }

Also I don't like the IE image toolbar popping up over
my comic so you could add:

META HTTP-EQUIV=imagetoolbar CONTENT=no

And finally since I got my other wish for Garfield :)
how about displaying multiple comics on one page - I
find myself having to keep typing in the following
sequence to read all my comics:

comx /comic1, read it, comx /comic2, read it, etc...

so if I could just type

comx /comic1 /comic2 etc

and it display them all in the same window (probably
would need a scrollbar).

Just thought I'd ask :)

Brent

Re: [DQSD-Users] new comics search

2004-02-22 Thread Brent Beardsley
Hi Monty,

Is there any reason you didn't use parseArgs? It auto
matches so I can type comx /dil and it'll go to the
dilbert comics instead of having to type comx /dilbert
completely. Also I tried comx /born to try the born
loser comic and got a runtime error and then realized
it was /loser. So you should probably check for
invalid input.

My $.02,

Brent

Re: [DQSD-Users] how to add images to pop up menu?

2004-02-18 Thread Brent Beardsley
Hi Pablo,

If you're referring to the menu popped up from the
button, it's not currently possible. It's a windows
menu not an HTML menu. You'd have to modify the C++
code in the DQSD MenuBuilder ActiveX control.

 on a Mac. This is a
 good thing for those of us that do web-design and
 need to 'look at'
 our pages on a Mac but don't want to actually have

 It only takes a screen-shot of the top 'view' of the

 usually enough to get a clue of how it's supposed to
 look.

 This is how the iCapture service describes itself:

 iCapture is provided as a public service to the 97%

manually setting it. Anyone up on NSIS and Windows
version checking? Is there a way in WinXP to
programatically figure out which theme is running?

Just my $.02,

 I also made some tiny changes, that I would like to
 post to get feedback etc :

 I set a css id on the table used to house the
 gobutton. I called it gotable. I wanted to be
 able to control the display of the gobutton via css.
  This also allowed the graphic to be vertically
 centered, which has been bothering me... I think
 this change would be good no matter what OS the
 toolbar is in.. Its nice to have control from css
 instead of hardcoded values in the html..

 I added some css styles for #banner.

 changed some of the css for body.

 changed the cursor for these buttons to be hand, set
 the backgrounds etc...

 Attached are the files I modified, and the graphics
 to match the olive scheme..

 I tested the search.htm on a win2k box and the
 change did not adversely affect the toolbar
 display..

 Comments?  Suggestions?

Hi Alex,

I'm running WinXP and Firebird .7 but haven't seen the
problems you're having. All I did was install it and
then in the Firebird General Options panel select Set
Default Browser and then set launchmode=1; in my local
preferences and it's been working great.

 Not on WinXP, but on W2K I've got some ten or eleven
 browsers
 installed (including Firebird .7) for testing, and
 DQSD works just
 fine.

RE: [DQSD-Users] Web button graphics (attached)

Hi Shawn,

It's in CVS under the dqsdweb module not the dqsd
module

 Hi John,

  The way I think it works is that the web server
 has
  a script that pulls from CVS every 15 minutes or
 so.
  So if you CVS it as favicon.ico, the web page will
  get it automagically.

 But where do I CVS it to? The only folders I see
 under CVS are
 addons, events, localsearches, searches,
 src - they don't
 exactly equate to the webspace as far as I can tell.
 None of the html
 files look even remotely like the website.

If I understand you correctly - yes.

There is a function in defer_tools.js:

function setSearchWindowText(text, autoselect)

that allows you to write to the DQSD search window.

A lot of the built in functionality calculator, clock,
history, etc use this function to update the search
window text.

As far as your other questions about clipboard, etc I
have no idea...

Good luck,

RE: [DQSD-Users] Using another editor and browser

2003-02-21 Thread Brent Beardsley
It works correctly just be sure and escape the
backslashes and make sure the executable exists!

So for me and my editor whose path is

C:\program files\editplus 2\editplus.exe

I have

configureEditorExe=C:\\program files\\editplus
2\\editplus.exe;
