WOW!

Never saw that before. Looks like I'm going to be
ordering some of those for my twins and my TR-4, post
haste, to replace the relatively new blue gel!!

I have never had a Drake receiver with a noise blanker, so I cannot
speak about their performance, but I have used the blankers in my Ten
Tec Argonaut II and the Omni V and find them to be very good. The one
in the Argo is very useful on pulse, solar, and auroral noise. I use it
as the tunable IF in my VHF system. It can overload on loud signals
that are near the frequency it is tuned to, but by backing off the RF
gain, this can be easily fixed. I wish someone made a blanker for the 2B.

Mods.dk has an article by KL7NA called "A New Noise Blanker for the
Drake R-4C" that describes the author's modification of an old TenTec NB
board to work in his R4C. In the article, he claims that it performed
far better than the Drake 4NB. The TenTec board is no longer available,
but he includes the schematic - it's less complex than the Drake unit
and would probably be pretty easy to scratch build.

I have no experience with either the Drake or TenTec blankers, so can't
comment on his results.

2007-05-12 Thread Steve Brose
Hi everyone

Please excuse if this got repeated, but I thought of some importance. Joe,
WC4R, the guy who made the logbooks for us just posted a message on his
drakelogbook page that said he got some bounced e-mails from the server
move. I don't know if he will get through to the net or not but there are
about 40% of the people who have not paid him yet for their logbooks. The
money is due in a few days and I thought I owed it to him to pass this along
in case he didn't.

Here is the url for his list. I hope I'm not interfering. I have really
been enjoying the chatter on the net.

I have on my desk right now...1000D,1000MP field,775dsp ,two R4C's along

importantly, the R4C's beat the modern rigs in performance.

I didn't take it personally,if anyone else did on the list,I can't quite see
how.

2007-05-12 Thread David & Chris Drake
Well, thanks to all for the many noise blanker comments. I guess I must be in
a fortunate location. On 3 acres, surrounded by trees, no power lines (elec is
underground) and no farmers within a half mile with any electric fences.
Station is very well grounded. I always heard hams brag on the Drake NB's over
the years, and have'nt thought much about them until discussion on the newer
noise limiters came up. Hope the discussion and comments were usefull to many!

The comments on the TR4_/R4_ blanker also apply to the TR7_/R7_ blanker:
great for pulse noise, ineffectual for atmospherics. The TR7 blanker was
designed during the days of the Russian Woodpecker and was amazingly effective
against it. The best classic rig for noise control I've used was the Atlas
350XL; had a blanker for impulse noise and a limiter for atmospherics (at
least that's my recollection; haven't used one since switching to the TR7
twenty some years ago, hi).
