[Drakelist] R4C T4 alignment
Early this week I sent this message to another list but got a very boring yawn (no replies) so I will ask here in the hopes that someone can enlighten me. I have not tried to align any of my Drake twins before but find that I have to do something to get them back to transceiving on the correct frequency. I have been looking at the R4C manual (although I don't have the exact one for my exact series. At any rate, in the manual it says: Apply signal of exactly 50khz to pin 1 of V4. and Connect signal generator to pin 1 of V2. and Set generator to exactly 5645.000khz My question is, when hooking up the counter and signal generator do I need to isolate/decouple them (and how...10pf series capacitor?) or is a direct connection ok? Thank you. Jim Pruitt WA7DUY ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
Re: [Drakelist] TR-7
You did not say what DDS board is being used or how it is hooked up. My first thought when I read this was to ask if you wired your dds vfo to get powr from the 10 volt receive line that goes to zero transmit so that DDS ends up being turned off during transmit. If you have no VFO during transmit the display will do some strange things. More details of your installation would be helpful. Thank you. Re: [Drakelist] TR-4 mystery circuit attached to PTO
I have not checked the TR4 manual but in the T4 series they show the FSK circuit. I had 2 of them in mine as well. One was set for 850 cps shift while the other was for 170 cps shift. That was at the time when things were still at 850 but moving to 170. I was also in MARS and they were stuck on 850. I am sure you have a frequency shift keying circuit for 2 shifts on your pto. Good luck. Jim Pruitt On 4/26/2012 at 6:10 AM, garywinb...@comcast.net wrote: Ethan, It is certainly some sort of FSK circuit. Actually, it looks like 2 FSK circuits. Why 2? Well, if one is good, two must be better, right? Back in the day, it was common to use both normal shift (850Hz) and narrow shift (170Hz). Normally you just changed it by the control voltage but the DPO of yours didn't know that. OR, maybe he put in two so he could implement an RIT using one. The schematic looks wrong, they are in series instead of parallel (kinda sorta) and looks like it was uncompleted. Construction is uh... UGLY and HUGE, I would remove it and start over, IF you want FSK. My guesses only BTW, Drake issued actual drawings of FSK circuits. I know because the PO of mine installed it in my T-4X and included the memo (tech tip?) with the manual. You need a wire coming out somehow. Re: [Drakelist] A Great Source for Real HC-6/U Crystals
Hello Don and the group. Please do not quote me but if memory serves me correctly the HC-6 and the FT243 have the same center to center pin spacing, just the diameter of the pins is different with the FT-243 being bigger (as in same diameter as a pin from an old octal tube or .093 od). Also I do not think that International Crystal still has HC-6/U holders as they now call then HC-48's. I once tried to have a discussion with International Crystal about that and got no answer but if you look at their web site. That is just a nomenclature difference but it makes it hard to go to a manufacturer's web site and find what you are looking for without knowing that the old nomenclature no longer exists but what you are looking for is called something else and still exists. I think Bry Carling's web site has a crystal socket page that shows them very well. From Bry's web page at: http://www.af4k.com/crystal_holders.htm he lists the HC6 and FT243 as: FT243, 2 pins, spaced 0.486 and .093 dia. HC-6/U - Crystal, metal can, spacing 0.486, pin dia. 0.050 Holder TypePin SpacingPin DiameterHeightWidthThickness HC-5/U0.8120.1562.201.821.60 HC-6/U0.4860.0500.780.760.35 HC-10/U(Note A)0.0601.10-0.56D HC-13/U0.4860.0500.780.760.35 HC-17/U0.4860.0930.780.760.35 HC-18/U(Note B)-0.530.400.15 HC-25/U0.1920.0401.530.760.35 FT-2430.5000.0931.100.900.40 FT-243 - Dimensions: 13/16 X 3/8 X 1-1/8 tall Dimensions: 0.8125 wide X 0.375 deep X 1.125 tall plus pins. Dimensions: 20.6mm X 9.5mm X 28.6 mm With 2 pins, spaced 0.486 (12.3mm) and pin diameter = 0.093 (2.4mm) Pin length =3/8 (9.5mm). He lists the HC48 as: HC-48/U - Crystal Unit, thin pins, same as HC-6/U but welded. and that is also what you will get from International Crystal. I just looked at Jan Crystal's web page at http://www.jancrystals.com/chart.html and they still list them as HC-6/U. I found their web site hard to use from an ordering standpoint but they have been around for years. I do not know if that sheds any light on the discussion or not but the HC48 versus HC6 discussion caught me by surprise at International when I was looking for crystals a few years ago. By the same token, HC25 (small plug in crystals liked used in the old Drake crystal controlled 2 meter transceivers) is something like HC50 now and the HC18 wire lead is now the common HC49. Again the HC49 and HC50 or HC25 and HC18 if you will, is like the HC6 and FT243 in that the pin spacing is the same but the pin diameter is different. HC-18/U - Crystal - same as HC-49/U but soldered HC-25/U - Crystal - Same as HC-49 but with rigid pins. (also same as HC50/U but soldered) So I gather from Bry's discussion that the difference between the HC6 and the HC50 is that the HC6 is has a soldered on shell where the HC50 has a welded shell. Same for the HC25 and HC50 in that the HC-25 is soldered and the HC-50 is welded. Why the holder nomenclature is different just because they used a different method to attach the top cover is beyond me but then I am not in manufacturing. Thank you. Jim Pruitt On 12/19/2011 at 7:15 PM, d...@martineer.net wrote: Lee, I'm really not understanding your posts I have seen on several venues today. As far as HC-6/U's go, you can buy them from International Crystal, in Oklahoma City for around $20 per crystal and know that they meet or exceed the original specs that Drake, Collins, etc used when these rigs were new. Why go to all the trouble of ordering overseas?? Now, if Vincent makes FT-243 type crystals, or HC-6/U types with FT-243 sized pins, then I DO understand and would be interested. Re: [Drakelist] All band TX for the TR-7
It has been a long time (pronounced 3 DECADES ) since I did the mod on my TR7 as well. I do remember that I did a bit more looking and found that there is a male pin sticking up from the motherboard and is the transmit inhibit line (going to Q9001 as I recall). So I put a piece of spaghetti/insulation/heat shrink tubing over that male pin. That stopped it from making contact when the DR7 was plugged in. That saved having to cut that trace and then jumper the break when/if I get rid of the TR7. You want to be really careful with that mod as it allows transmitting across the entire spectrum. Prior to that mod the system would not transmit out of the band. Since the WARC bands did not exist yet when the TR7 came out those bands do not work. This mod enables transmitting in the WARC bands (AND EVERYWHERE ELSE From 1.8 mhz to 30 MHZ). If using the AUX7 then the various band segment modules could be programed to allow transmit or not allow transmit depending on the presence or absence of a diode at that pin in the module. By disabling the transmit inhibit (break the connection by cutting the trace or with insulation over the pin) you eliminate any safety net you hand that might stop you from accidentally transmitting on a frequency you were listening to outside of the ham bands. Good luck. Jim Pruitt On 10/8/2011 at 4:34 AM, wd8...@yahoo.com wrote: Guys the other week someone ask about all band TX for the TR7. Found this method in my notes on the TR7. Re: [Drakelist] Drake TR7 QST April 2009 Article
I also thought that QST left out more information than they included. I had seen the TR7 Renewed article on WB6HFN's web site but did not put the name together. I was mostly interested in the DDS VFO that he used. In corresponding with Marc about it I found out that it was KD1JV's Mini DDS VFO which uses a AD9835 DDS chip and a Atmel AT90S2313 cpu. I could not find the source code or hex file for Steve's project. In corresponding with KD1JV he indicated that the Mini DDS vfo was a project that was done over 10 years ago and had only sold about 50. Because it was done on his 486 computer the media is gone and no info on redoing the project and no desire to do so since there is much better stuff out there. Floyd's use of Craig Johnson, AA0ZZ and I think AMQrp project IQPro (pc boards sold by Kanga US) would be an excellent choice for that and Floyd has some information and pictures of his install. Floyd, K8AC also has modified source code for the TR7 and the IQPro. My interest in the DDS VFO used for the R7 mod was not for use with my TR7 but because I bought a very low serial number R4B parts chassis on ebay (from a ham who described it as a R4C). The R4B had no tubes, pto, dial, or either of the brass shaft/tube for the preselector rack or passband switch and no bearings for them. So it was just a chassis. I am not a purist and since I have to do a major overhaul anyway I thought this would be a good candidate for installing a DDS vfo and digital dial. I had wanted to use the WB2V/N2APB/AA0ZZ DDS vfo from 1997 QEX ( http://www.njqrp.org/mbrproj/9850dds.html ) which FAR sells a pc board for and it used a 16F84A but Craig Johnson modified for a 16F628 recently. What I can not do is program the cpu to have limited coverage (4.9mhz through 5.6mhz) like KD1JV's program did. I tried contacting a couple other vendors that sell DDS vfo's and none could imagine why I would even want to limit the range to 500 khz plus overlap! N2APB wants me to use the AMQrp HC908 board and they have an excellent article about it at http://www.amqrp.org/kits/HC908%20VFO/index.html and using it for a vfo on their web site. Since George offered to help me with this I will go with the HC908. If it were not for that I would be tempted to try the WB6DHW ( http://wb6dhw.com ) AD9912/AD9954 DDS boards. Another possibility is the AVR Butterfly like WA5BDU has at http://pages.suddenlink.net/wa5bdu/butterfly_dds.html but am not sure if the Butterfly board is still available from Atmel or not. Has anyone else done the DDS VFO (not as an external vfo)? How did that work out? Has there been enough output or did you have to add a buffer or amp like http://pages.suddenlink.net/wa5bdu/dds_amp.htm in order to get enough output? Thank you. For some inexplicable reason, many of his solutions were left completely out of the article (e.g. solution for power output not flat, and solution for low sensitivity on the higher bands. ) I don't think it's worth all the work to install all of the mods shown in the article, but the ones NOT shown are interesting. I just checked the magazine, and see that they left out the PTO stabilizer mod as well. That one can be added without extending the cabinet in any way and is documented on the Web. Re: [drakelist] R-4 Series Crystal Alternatives
Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hello Eddy. I have built 2 of the Steve Hageman Give that Drake Receiver a New Lease on Life ( http://www.arrl.org/qst/2004/06/hageman.pdf ) projects from the June 2004 issue of QST and troubleshooting info at http://www.geocities.com/hagtronics/r4.html and more troubleshooting info at N0SS site at http://www.n0ss.net/drake_het_osc_xtal_elim_notes.pdf off of his page at http://www.n0ss.net/index_general.html . Tom has an Excel spreadsheet bill of materials at http://www.n0ss.net/drake_xtal_elim_proj_parts_list.xls but it has not been updated since 2005. The Hageman FS4 clone works well and looks good. The cost is a bit high (but what DIY projects are not more expensive than commercial products these days( (I think mine cost in the neighborhood of $150 with all new parts and a pc board from Fred at FAR Circuits) and I was not that impressed with some of the methods used in the design but it is still a good item and does the job very well. The part that I did not like was that the segments were 500khz segments (starting at 12.6mhz for 160 meters). Why does that matter since most band segments tuned are 500khz, you ask. I am in MARS and some of the frequencies fall close to the IF area where Drake recommends using crystals that start in the middle of the band segment (when using the T4X series and transceiving). This is mostly a non issue now, since MARS outlawed older amateur gear on their frequencies. Other than that the Hageman FS4 clone is ok. It does look nice in the MS4 enclosure with the vinyl overlays that Tom Hammond, N0SS had made that resemble the face of the FS4. Tom also had ovelays made for a Hammond enclosure for those that did not want to put it in a MS4. I also looked very hard at the project at http://www.jimcom.net/elehobby/r4cdds/index.html which uses an Analog Devices AD9850 DDS chip. The web page is in Japanese (I do not read or speak Japanese) but the schematic is viewable and the code for the Pic 16F84 is there. There are other Analog Devices chips that would probably work better like the DDS_Controllers group project that uses a AD9912 (I think) DDS chip. You can also cheat and use a signal generator to replace the FS4 (expensive waste of test gear) or use a vfo if you have one that covers those ranges that you need. The DDS signal generators that use the AD9850 series are probably the easiest and cheapest to come by as there were many scattered across the web. I personally do not like having to buy a bunch of crystals since International Crystal is harder to deal with these days and Jan Crystals web page is hard to use. I guess Bomar is still in business (correct me if I am wrong). It is getting harder to buy crystals from crystal manufacturers (at least at a reasonable price) because the mass production market has moved to cpu clock crystals. The Italian outfit that is making a DDS synthesizer for the Drake twins makes a good product from what I have gathered on this list but that price is way out of my budget. If you are inclined to make one of the DDS sythesizers you might look at the NJQRP DDS daughtercard at http://www.amqrp.org/kits/dds60/ . It uses a AD9851 which is not included with the kit but may still be available directly from Analog Devices as a free sample (they are really good about samples of current production chips but samples are not available for chips that are at the end of their production life). Trev (now K6ESE) had a DDS pc board available on the QRP-L group for a while that used an Atmel AT89S8252 cpu. That project is written up at http://www.k6ese.com/DDS_Project.htm but is no longer available but the schematic as well as the source code are available on his site. There are many many other web sites that have a AD9850-51-54 series DDS synthesizer project outlined as well as some newer ones like the DDS_Controller Yahoo group. Craig Johnson, AA0ZZ, and the group hanging out at the DDS-VFO Yahoo group and are a great bunch of guys. Craig made the IQ-Pro DDS project for NJQRP or AMQrp group and now are working on a better version. Craig's homepage is at http://home.comcast.net/~aa0zz/aa0zz-main.html so you might look at that. I do not know if the above helps or just muddies the waters but I hope that it shows you that there are other alternatives to the FS4. Good luck. Hello Ron. That was an excellent article. There were a couple of things that I would like to have seen clarified. You mentioned that you used blue film that was the same color that Drake originally used but did not say what that color was. You also said that the film was available from several sources but you did not mention any of the sources and did not say where you get your film. Also you mention that using paint to touch up scratches would usually be more obvious than not painting the scratches but do not say what colors would match if you decided to try and cover the scratches. I know that there has been a lot of discussion on here about what paint and what colors match but I have not seen anything definitive. Thank you. Re: [drakelist] Solid State Tube Replacements
Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Sartori published an article in QST in 1972 (I think). At least it was in the early to mid 70's. The article was a how to article for the tubesters that he later produced commercially. As has been pointed out on this list before Sartori worked in the semiconductor industry and was able to get transistors branded for him and with the package needed. Even at the time the article came out the transistors were hard to find in the package (TO-220 or TO-202 style I think) used by several of the transistors that Sartori used. The small TO-92 package was obtainable but the larger (TO-220 or TO-202) package was hard to find. I have been looking for a set of these tubesters and have posted requests on here from time to time but have not had a lot of success. I think many on this list feel that solid state tube replacements are a sacrilege to put a non stock part in the Drake line but I look for parts to keep my twins working and if they are solid state them that means they will work that much longer. Tubes are obtainable but are no longer produced in large scale. I am also told that the performance of the solid state tubes is not as good as the hollow state original tubes. Your mileage may vary. I hope this was helpful. Re: [drakelist] U9003 DR-7 PROM Chip- Copy?
Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hello Mike and the group. I have it from 2 reliable sources that U9003 was actually a mask programmed 74S387 which is a 256 x 4 bipolar prom. I have found circuits for a couple of readers. One is at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/5857/progamr.htm but will only do the Signetics versions (82S126, 82S129, etc) which are available from Jameco but much more expensive than the 74S387. What I have not been able to find is what software to use with that hardware. N7OCS sells a dos program but I can not tell from his web page if that will only set up files for Syntor and MCX100 Motorola vhf radios or if it will read and program all the devices the programmer will work with. So if anyone knows where to get software that will work with the programmer I would be interested in knowing. I do know that there are many universal programmers in current production that read bipolar proms but most are in the $800 plus price range. There was one a pocket programmer that I ran across that is usb but is $250. It is or was very popular with the PIC group. Re: [drakelist] Specs for TR7 mod
Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hello Ron. Here is a link to Scott's comments about the article: http://www.dproducts.be/Drake_Museum/tr-7mods.htm I will paste them below then comment some more after the Prather comments that are copied from JM Cherry's great Drake web page: Improving the Drake TR-7 by Scott D. Prather, N7NB (ex-KB9Y) Reversible Modifications Enhance Performance Please Note: The mailing address included on the first page of this article is no longer current. Please address all correspondence to Scott Prather at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Abstract. The Drake TR-7 is an outstanding all-band, solid-state transceiver that was a trendsetter when it was unveiled to the amateur radio market in 1978. However, the TR-7 was not without its problems, some of which included: Poor receive performance below 1.5 MHz No full break-in (QSK) CW operation Compromised signal/noise ratio when using narrow CW filters High cooling fan noise, and the stock fan operates only when the radio is powered from an AC source My article, which originally appeared in the Summer, 1992, issue of Communications Quarterly, addresses these four problems with modifications that require no drilled holes, making them 100% reversible. Notes Improving the TR-7 is reprinted here in its entirety, and it appears on the Web with the permission of Communications Quarterly. I scanned the original 19-page paper and converted it into an Adobe ® PDF file. The size of this file is approximately 1.9 MB, so it will take a while to download if you are using dial-up Internet access. For example, at 28.8 kbps it took me about 14 minutes to download the file. Component Availability At the time that this article was written, all of the components required for these modifications were readily available. However, there are a few components that are currently difficult to obtain. The most difficult component to locate is D2005 (MA4P4002D), a stud-mount, high-power PIN diode manufactured by M/A COM. It's my understanding that this diode is no longer available from the manufacturer, and I've been unable to locate a diode that I'm convinced will function as a substitute. The MA4P4002D has the following specifications at 25 degrees Celsius: Series Resistance @ 100 mA forward current: 0.5 ohms Carrier Lifetime: 6 microseconds @ 100 mA forward current Voltage Rating: 200 Volts Power Dissipation: 15 watts Initially, my decision to use M/A COM's stud-mounted PIN diode was driven by the requirement to support 100% duty cycle operation, such as RTTY or SSTV. However, for low duty-cycle modes such as SSB and CW, I have successfully used the MA4P4002B axial-lead PIN diode with a small heat sink on the diode body. Unfortunately, this diode is not readily available either. Generally, any axial-lead PIN diode capable of dissipating about 5 watts and meeting the series resistance, voltage rating, and carrier lifetime specifications listed above should function in a low duty cycle application at the 150W power level of the TR-7. I will continue my search for a substitute, and I'll post my findings here. If anyone has a suggestion for a substitute, please send the information to me at the e-mail address listed above. The second component that's difficult to obtain is reed-relay K2001, manufactured by Magnecraft. I've been unable to locate a source for this part, however, it appears that an EAC P/N 20-1121-30 reed relay should work in its place. The primary difference between the original Magnecraft part and the EAC substitute is the lead pinout. The EAC relay has short in-line pins, while the Magnecraft part had longer leads which would permit a triangular PC pad configuration at each end. Also, the NC contact on the EAC part is on the opposite side of the relay from the Magnecraft part. However, minor redrilling of the PC board along with a jumper to the NC contact will solve these minor compatibility problems. Miscellaneous: A minor change in operation is required if a TR-7 is modified with my QSK card and subsequently used to transceive with a Drake R-7 receiver using the Drake 1548 cable. Because the QSK card RX Mute line only functions when the TR-7 is turned on, the R-7 will be muted if the Mute button is depressed and the TR-7 is turned off. To use the R-7 when the TR-7 is off, just release the R-7 Mute button. Errata: Although I carefully reviewed this article prior to its publication, in a project of this scope some errors are bound to occur. The known errors are: Page 22, Figure 3: Two minor labeling errors exist in this schematic. There are two capacitors labeled C2002, one connected to point C and the other to the drain of Q2002. The capacitor connected to point C should be C2006. Also, there are two capacitors labeled C2005, one connected to point I and one from L2002 to ground. Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hello Floyd. Willi Rass mentioned modifying the store switch to power his TR7 preamp http://www.df4nw.de http://www.df4nw.de/download/PreAmpInstallation.pdf but did not give any more details but WB4HFN has a very good web page here http://www.wb4hfn.com/DRAKE/DrakeArticles/TR7_Store_Switch/XmitKey.htm that rewires the store switch to work as a transmit switch. He has some very nice pictures and explains things very well. I hope that was what you were looking for. Re: [drakelist] TR7 replacement DF4NW LED assembly sold by W2ENY
Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- or you can go to: http://members.bellatlantic.net/vze3rys4/TR7_Display/ and buy the DF4NW replacement LED display for a fixed price plus shipping. This is not a replacement for the DR7. It is a replacement for the 6 LED's used in the DR7 since the original 2 digit and 4 digit LED's that made up the display in the original DR7 are no longer available. If you have one or more bad digits or segments in the original LED's then this will fix (replace them). I purchased one and they work very well but your mileage may vary. I have no connection with either DF4NW or W2ENY, just a satisfied customer. Re: [drakelist] Mods in the Jan-Feb 06 QEX for the Harmonized R4C?
Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hello Jim. According to the article itself (mods done on a late R4C with 6EJ7 first and third mixer). Major Features: High performance LM1875 audio amplifier (THD at 20 W/1 khz of 0.15% typically 12v regulated supply (+12v and -12v) for solid state circuitry. SN602 product detector SN602 as R4C third mixer. MiniCircuits SBL-3 double balanced mixer (+7dbm LO) as R4C second mixer. MAV-11 MMIC to increase IF gain after the R4C second mixer. Sherwood 600 Hz first IF CW filter, with realay switching so the stock 8khz wide first IF filter is retained for SSB/AM operation. Completely new three speed hang AGC system after the second IF crystal filters and allows the gain of all the stages before the R4C's third mixer to run at maximum. The AGC has one speed for very fast CW (35wpm-plus), plus one for slower cw and one for SSB. One thing that did not set well with me was that the author drilled a hole and installed a small toggle switch on the front panel. The artilce was written because the author had a basket case R4C and wanted to do the mods that W8JI had done but W8JI did not document his mods and the NC0B and K8RRH mods used parts no longer readily available. As one other Drakelister pointed out to me off list was that the author does not recommend the mods on a good and working R4C. I did not read that but did read that it was done on a basket case. In reading the article I did keep thinking that the guy was sure not improving resale value but as the author stated, he has no intention of ever selling his modified R4C so the estetic value was totally unimportant. I contacted Fred at FAR circuits and asked if he was going to make pc boards for this article (the article used only dead bug and breadboard). Fred said he had no plans to make any pc boards and I can understand that since it would not be a popular mod (for one thing, a lot of us do not have the late R4C). I did wonder about the LM1875 audio amp (20 watt). My R4C needs work (motorboats) and I wanted to do the Sherwood PS4 mod and the audio amp. I have a Velleman audio amp kit that I was going to use but in reading Bob Sherwood (NC0B) mods a few decades ago in Ham Radio Magazine made me wonder how my Velleman audio amp would work since Bob said to be careful about lead lengths (had to be exact lengths or would oscillate). So the LM1875 audio amp was the one mod I was considering but did not want to butcher my R4C. Hope that information was helpful. Thank you. [drakelist] Re: [Drake] TR-7 Help
Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hello Lee. The Communications Quarterly article reprint is at the Drake Museum at http://www.dproducts.be/Drake_Museum/images/tr7art.pdf It takes a while to load. This is the link to the mods and corrections to the above article: http://www.dproducts.be/Drake_Museum/tr-7mods.htm If you find a source for the MA4P4002D let me know as I am still looking for one. I did get the MA4P4002B which will work without problems if you do not run RTTY and other full duty cycle modes. I got the MA4P4002B from Richardson Electronics ( http://www.rell.com/ ) for about $7 if memory serves me. In the above mods page, Scott Prather mentions an EAC relay that Digikey sells that will work with a coule of wiring changes or N0SS laid out another QSK pc board for me that will take the EAC relay. I have been unable to find a reasonable source for the Magnecraft W104MIP42 relay but did find several sources--the cheapest was $38! The EAC relay from Digikey was in the $7 USD range. I got the RSD-12 relays from Richard AG6K ( main page at http://www.somis.org/ ). He bought many when Aromat informed him that they were discontinuing that relay so that one is available. Also the Communications Quarterly article appears in John Lougmiller (KB9AT) excellent book The R.L. Drake Story -- A Family Affair available from Universal Radio and Amazon. The article appears a little different in the book because Scott Prather re-drew the schematics so that they are easier to follow. The PC boards for the Scott Prather mods outlined in the Summer 92 Communications Quarterly article are available from FAR circuits. I know you will like the TR7. It is and was a great radio. [drakelist] WTB MAcom MA4P4002D pin diode and Magnecraft W104MIP42 relay for Scott Prathers TR7 mods
Jim Pruitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hello everyone. I just purchased the pc boards from FAR for Scott Prather's TR7 mods that appeared in summer 92 Communications Quarterly and in KB9AT's book A Family Affair: The RL Drake Story and am finding that the MA4P4002D pin diode is not obtainable. Richardson electronics has a few MA4P4002B-042 but it does not have the power dissipation of the D version and I want to run Rtty. Would anyone have one of those pin diodes they would be willing to part with? I know that there was some discussion on this list or the Elecraft list that suggested using the 1N4007 diode but Scott indicated that he did not think that would work that well. I asked about the MA4P1200 that DownEastMicrowave.com sells but Scott thought the recovery time was not good enough. The MA4P4002B-042 will work but may not handle the power needed. Also, I am trying to find the Magnecraft W104MIP42 reed relay for the qsk board. I found 3 places that have them. 2 places want $60 each and the other wants $40. Does anyone have one of these relays they would be willing to part with at a reasonable price? As a side note, I thought the Aromat RSD12 spdt reed relay for the front end board would be easy to find but I was wrong. I found that they have also been discontined. Rich Measures AG6K bought a bunch of them when Aromat informed him that the relay was being discontinued so he has those for sale at around $10 each but that was the only source that I have found so far. I am not sure how much this will help but a few years ago (5 maybe) someone posted to this list saying that the Radio Shack 40-1261 speaker 5x7 was a good replacement. Unfortunately Radio Shack discontinued it not too long after that. [drakelist] R4B PTO repair questions
I recently dug into an R4B to try to find out why it was not working. One thing that I found is the brass plate that sits on the threaded main shaft that also push/pulls the coil slug in and out was at the back of the housing and was out of threads so the main threaded rod was not picking up that slide. I unscrewed the adjusting allen screw a half turn and that gave me part of a thread for the slide to grab but that also pulled that threaded shaft back enough that the ball bearings fell out and went everywhere. So I am looking for a source for those ball bearings and also need some info on how that pto goes back together mechanically. I have the article from WB8RCR's site but do not see what I am looking for (to see how the ball bearings are held in there and also whether a washer is needed between the brass plate and the housing). I found a few of the bearings but I must be missing something because there was nothing to hold them in the race they had fallen out of so they fell again. I thought the tapered collar on the threaded shaft also held the bearings into the race but I either can not get that collar far enough forward and being too far forward the shaft will not turn. If it is backed off slightly it will turn but the bearings fall out. Also when all the way forward like the there are enough threads for the brass plate and it runs off the end and will not start forward again. Does anyone have a url or a good description of how the pto goes together and still works and travels? Thank you.
